on thursday, october 3, students at Sunny Hill Elementary were intro-duced to a Little Free Library. The library will give young readers 24-hour, year-round access to chil-dren’s literature, and pro-vide a space for readers to share their favorite books. Located outside in the school’s reading garden, the library is a wooden box filled with free children’s books. Students may borrow a book and return it, or keep it and bring back another book for someone else to enjoy. Co-founder of the library, Robin Ross-Henning, hopes to encourage a love of read-ing and a sense of community as the children share the books they enjoy. Ross-Henning and co-founder Annmarie Crowley became interested in building the library after volunteering at school. CUSD 220 Enrichment Instruction Specialist Lori Ford was also a key member of the project. DePaul University art student, Reed Henning, painted the library. Ross-Henning and Crowley collected cash donations and books from their book groups, friends, Barrington Newcomers and Neighbors Club, and Half Price Books in Palatine. Ross-Henning, Crowley, and Sarah Hoban will restock the library weekly. They are seeking new or gently used children’s books appropriate for students from kindergarten through fifth grade. To contribute books, email [email protected].

thomas balsamo’s Passion for PhotograPhy began back in 1970 on his 10th birthday. His uncle gave him a Kodak Instamatic camera, and Balsamo fell in love with capturing life’s moments. In 1978, when he was a junior at Barrington High School, Balsamo founded Portraits by Thomas in a studio in his parent’s basement. Around that time, he discov-ered the work of epic portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh from Ottawa Canada. Balsamo feels that Karsh had an amazing ability to capture a glimpse of one’s soul through their eyes. His work inspired Balsamo to a life’s quest of capturing

the essence of people through portraiture. “I realized that this type of interpretive portraiture of our loved ones has the potential to become our most valuable positions,” said Balsamo. “Scores of my clients have confirmed that to me over the years.”

Balsamo feels fortunate to have discovered what he calls his Interpretive Portraiture style. “A lot of the portraits out there, in my opinion, are just a mere physical record of someone at a specific time. The path I have taken has been so rewarding because interpretive portraits hold immense intrinsic value.

They grow in value through the years because they reveal mysteries through the eyes and evoke an emotional response to the viewer.”

Thomas Balsamo has striven to serve his clients by creating their most valuable positions, and wants to thank Barrington for its support. “It has been an incredible and rewarding privilege and joy. Thank you for 35 great years.”

Portraits by Thomas Celebrates 35 Years

One of Balsamo’s favorite pictures that he took is this portrait. “The image of this little girl’s portrait epitomizes my portrait style,” said Balsamo. “She is so beautiful and you can see a glimpse of her soul through her eyes. She is not smil-ing at the camera, she is just at peace and in the moment.”
