Dr. Todd Speed will lead sessions on Rev. Dr. Joan Gray’sbook Sailboat Church at the church-wide retreat at theCalvin Center in October. Copies of Joan’s book areavailable in the church office for $13.50.From amazon.com:

Is your church a rowboat church or a sailboat church? Rowboat churches depend largely on human effort. When church budgets and membership numbersstagnate, rowboat churches frantically row harderagainst a current, often frustrated and disappointed attheir efforts. Sailboat churches, on the other hand, takeup the oars, hoist sails, and rely on the Holy Spirit to guidethem.Arguing that churches should be "sailboats," Joan S. Grayencourages readers to shift concern from the many daily, practical concerns of their local church to fresh ideas thatcan be found using the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Thebook includes forty days of sailingprayers, quotes from Scripture, briefreflection questions, and an extensivebibliography that is arranged bytheme. Perfect for groups to readtogether, this book will help leaders re-frame their church's mission andpractice with the Holy Spirit as theirguide.

The Westminster FellowshipAlthough Decatur Presbyterian Church has ministered to theAgnes Scott students since the college was founded, theWestminster Fellowship program of the denominationprovided a more focused ministry to college studentsbeginning in the 1940's. During the late 1940's and early50's many young Presbyterians attended Bible studies, youthconventions and service projects to enhance theirrelationships with God, the church and their peers all overthe world.

A major gathering of 1800 Presbyterian young people(including 40 from foreign countries and mission stations)took place in the summer of 1950. Representatives from 45states gathered at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, toattend the second Westminster Fellowship NationalAssembly. During the assembly youth discussed anddebated the pressing issues of their day - the Korean Warhad just begun, there was a call for a non-segregated Churchand society , and they wrestled with the issue of academicfreedom in public schools.

In the Southeast colleges and universities embraceddenominational chaplains on their campuses. PresbyterianStudent center buildings staffed with chaplains becamegathering places for students beyond the classrooms, libraries and fraternity or sorority houses. At DecaturPresbyterian the Westminster Fellowship program of the1950's is remembered as drawing from Agnes Scott Collegeand Columbia Theological Seminary primarily, but includingstudents from Emory and Georgia Tech as well.

During the 1960's DPC had a school bus driven by volunteerseach Sunday morning to pick up Georgia Tech and AgnesScott students and bring them to Sunday School andmorning worship. The bus repeated that trip for the Sundayevening Fellowship Dinner and program, the eveningworship service and open houses in the Church Parlor ormembers' homes afterwards. On Sunday afternoons the busalso was used to transport WF volunteers to the SavannahStreet Mission in a slum near the old Fulton Bag and CottonMill ( known as "Cabbagetown" and now greatlyre-gentrified). There they held a Sunday School programfollowed by songs and games with the children. These werelife-changing experiences for the students who sawfirst-hand the effects of poverty on the children, and beganto see in real life terms the trap that is created for themwhen education is limited and doors to better jobs andhousing cannot be opened without it. As is so often the case,WF students learned much more than they taught fromthese experiences.

The Westminster Fellowship program continued at DecaturPresbyterian into the 1980's, although programs andprojects changed with student interests over the years. Throughout the years church members served as adultadvisers for the group, provided meals and hospitality forthe college students, and provided a place of sanctuary forstudents to nurture their faith and friendships and prepareto be Christ's servants throughout the world.

DPC & Agnes Scott College:A Shared History

In 1888, Decatur Presbyterian Church called 36 year old Dr.Frank H. Gaines from Virginia to become its Pastor. At thattime Decatur had a population of approximately 1,250. TheDecatur Presbyterian Church had 235 members. Thedifficulties brought on the area by war and reconstructionhad a profound effect on education in Decatur. There weretwo schools in Decatur and neither of them were strong orfinancially secure.

Dr. Gaines had a strong Session at the Decatur PresbyterianChurch. Among its members was Colonel GeorgeWashington Scott. Col. Scott had been born in Pennsylvania, had moved South as a young man for health reasons, hadprospered as a businessman in Florida and in Savannahbefore moving to Decatur.

Dr. Gaines was convinced of the importance of Christianeducation for women. He began discussing with his Churchleaders the possibility of establishing such a school. In Julyof 1889 meetings were held, and the Decatur PresbyterianChurch Session resolved to establish a school for women. Their stated rationale was “…to educate a man mightproduce a good citizen, but to educate a woman mightresult in training a whole family.” An ambitious plan to startthe school in September, two months later, was adopted, 39potential pupils were signed up, and it was decided to callthe school the Decatur Female Seminary.

A principal from Virginia was hired at an annual salary of$600.00 per year. The school opened on September 24,1889, in a big two-story house near the present Agnes Scottcampus with a total of 63 students of grammar school age -including six boys.

Initial funding for the school was $5,350.00, underwritten by36 individuals, one of whom was Col. George WashingtonScott, who contributed $2,000.00.

A year later, Colonel Scott told Dr. Gaines that the Lord hadgreatly prospered him in his business, and he didn’t want itto harden his heart. He decided to give $40,000.00 toprovide a home for this new school. This gift wasannounced in large front-page headlines in the Atlantanewspapers. Legal steps were taken to change the namefrom Decatur Female Seminary to Agnes Scott Institute inhonor of George Washington Scott’s beloved mother.

The second session of the school started in September,1890, with enrollment of 138. Twenty-two of those enrolledwere boarding students. Over the next 14 years, as theschool grew, Colonel Scott personally bore the financialburden and covered operating deficits for the College; hisgifts exceeded $175,000.00 over those years.

In 1892, two thirds of the 220 ASC students were worshipingregularly at Decatur Presbyterian Church, whichnecessitated the building of a new and larger sanctuary. Historical records show that the growing congregation went

into significant debt to build the new sanctuary, partly dueto their commitment to the Agnes Scott community.

In 1896, Dr. Gaines, at the request of the Agnes Scott Boardof Trustees, resigned as Pastor of Decatur PresbyterianChurch to become the first President of Agnes ScottInstitute. He continued to serve as its President until hisdeath in 1923 at age 71. Colonel Scott died in 1903. Threeyears later in 1906, the school gained accreditation, the firstschool in Georgia to do so, and was chartered as Agnes ScottCollege.

Presidents of Agnes Scott College after Dr. Gaines wereJames Ross McCain from 1923 to 1951; Wallace Alston from1951 to 1973; Marvin Perry from 1973 to 1982; RuthSchmidt, who was the first female President, from 1982 to1994; Sally Mahoney, interim President from 1994-1995;and Mary Brown Bullock, who was the first alumnaPresident, from 1995 to 2006. Elizabeth Kiss is the 8thPresident in Agnes Scott’s 125-year history. She is agraduate of Davidson College, and the first Rhodes Scholarto hold that office. Incidentally, Agnes Scott produced thefirst Rhodes Scholar from a Georgia college many years ago.

Throughout the years Decatur Presbyterian Church andAgnes Scott College have remained intertwined. Agnes Scottstudents, faculty, administration and Presidents haveworshiped here, and this has been their Church. Many ofour Church members have served as Trustees of Agnes ScottCollege over the years.

Our Church’s Centennial Hymn, “God of the MarchingCenturies,” was originally written and composed for thecentennial of the Decatur Presbyterian Church in 1925. Thewords were written by Dr. D. P. McGeachy, Sr., our Pastorfrom 1918 to 1942, and a Trustee of Agnes Scott from 1920-1951. The music was composed by Professor C. W.Dieckmann, a member of the music faculty at Agnes Scottfrom 1905-1950. The tune was named “Gaines” for the firstPresident of Agnes Scott and the minister who came toDecatur Presbyterian Church in 1888. Our Centennial Hymnis also Agnes Scott College’s official hymn; it is sung there onall high academic occasions such as Founders Day andBaccalaureate.
