    The Purpose:

Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves:

to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study

to support the mission of the church worldwide

to work for justice and peace, and to build an inclusive community of women and men that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (USA) and witnesses to the promise of God’s kingdom.

    Presbyterian Women

  • Presbyterian Women

Presbyterian Women (PW) offers women in the church meaningful ways to

live out their faith in the midst of a caring community of women. For more

than 200 years Presbyterian women’s groups have strengthened the Presby-

terian church and played a major role in sharing the good news of Jesus Christ and wit-

nessing to the promise of God’s kingdom. PW is an independent organization of more

than 300,000 women within the PCUSA, offering programming and resources for women

to live their faith in the midst of an inclusive caring community. At DCPC there are op-

portunities through PW for women and men to pursue Bible study, service, retreats and

    ministry through PW.

    Special Offerings

Circles generally collect loose change at each meeting as part of the tradi-tional Least Coin Offering. Women from around the world contribute the smallest coins from their country as a symbol of their prayers for peace and reconciliation throughout the world. Any paper money collected goes to the Healthy Women Healthy Families ministry that provides maternal and child health care including mosquito nets and vaccinations in developing countries around the world. PW also makes Mothers Day cards available each spring for a donation to this worthy ministry. Each fall the Thank Offering is collected as a sym-bol of each woman’s gratitude for all the blessings she has received.

  • Women’s Retreat Each fall PW hosts an annual Women’s Retreat at the William Black Lodge in Montreat, NC. This

is an opportunity for women to experience a weekend of prayer, reflection and discussion led by a fa-cilitator and to enjoy the fellowship and recreation opportunities of the North Carolina mountains. In 2015, Mary Margaret Porter led a program entitled Standing at the Corner of Faith and Fear.

Soup and Salad Suppers Three times a year PW has soup and salad suppers for all women of the church. These simple,

program free evenings allow women of all ages to get to know other women in the church family with-out having to “bring a dish”.

  • Day of Service Presbyterian Women provide lunch for the church workers on Day of Service as well as provid-

ing food for the church Blood Drive, Room at the Inn and Habitat Building days

  • Alternative Gift Fair Each year Presbyterian Women join with members of Global and Community Missions to hold an Alternative Gift Fair. Members of the congregation and the community can “buy” gifts to support local non-profits such as Ada Jenkins Center, the Davidson Cornelius Child Development Center, the Housing Coalition, La Escuelita San Alban, SPOKES and E2D , to our mission partners at Blythe, Sigona and Nicaragua and groups such as A2S, Mothering Across Continents, the Nepal Orphans Home.

Gifts purchased at the Alternative gift fair continue to provide

    support throughout the year.

  • Birthday Brunch The birthday brunch is a tradition of Presbyterian Women. Held in the spring, there is a speaker

on a mission project supported by the church. The Birthday Offering started by Hallie Paxton in 1922 is collected. Women are challenged to give at least a penny for each year of their age to support groups selected by a committee of PCUSA Presbyterian Women. and in celebration of the birthday of Presby-terian women as a group. The Lifetime membership award is also given at this event. An Honorary Life Membership is conferred on an individual in recognition of faithful service in some area of the church and is commemorated with a pin and a certificate. Past recipients include:
