Faith Journey

Though born in Greenville, SC, I grew up in Greensboro, NC – 30 miles from the birthplace of Krispy Kreme doughnuts! I am the younger brother to two older sisters. My parents were active in the Presbyterian Church, and I enjoyed going to church, learning, and growing. I sensed a call to professional ministry while in high school.

I attended Davidson College (NC) where I earned a B.A. in Religion and sang in the male chorus. Though my faith was initially challenged in this academic setting, both my faith and sense of call were ultimately confirmed personally and by those who mentored me. I continued my education at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA completing a Masters of Divinity (1983) and then a Masters of Christian Education at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education (1984). There I also met my wife of 33 years, Deanna, whose hometown is Wichita, KS.

During my first call as Associate Pastor at First Presbyterian Church, Fairborn, OH, I came to realize that what I truly wanted was the senior pastor’s job; not that I wanted to take it from him, but that I wanted to do what he was doing, especially in terms of preaching and worship. This led to my accepting a call as the solo pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Danvers, IL. Here I learned that I really could write a sermon every week and that I could stand with people during the highs and lows of life. This community was the childhood home for our two children, Chris and Ginny.

After 12 years, we left Illinois to serve The Presbyterian Church of Washington, MO. Here I was blessed to work with a team of members eager to explore creative applications of music and drama in worship and others wanting to participate in mission trips for youth and adults. In 2010, I felt called to pursue a new pastorate and ended up accepting the position of Interim Pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau, MO. Though the experience enabled me to “practice” much of what I had been learning in terms of transitional ministry, it also confirmed my desire to be engaged in long-term relationships as I do ministry.

In 2013, I accepted the call to serve as solo pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Monett, MO. I had been at the church only two years when, in response to the PCUSA’s change of the Book of

Order regarding same-sex marriage and the definition of marriage, the Session took action to begin a process of discernment with the Presbytery considering whether or not to remain a part of the PCUSA. I made it clear from the very beginning that I would not be leaving the PCUSA. However, I began to realize that I was now in an unintentional interim situation, and I chose to embrace that new, though unexpected and unwanted, ministry position. After a year, during which the Session chose to transfer to ECO, we parted graciously in April 2016.

I have been searching for another call since then, and I have engaged in supply preaching throughout the Presbytery and continued to be involved in the life and ministry of the Presbytery. I have also continued to serve as a volunteer Chaplain at the local hospital.

Throughout my life music (singing) has always been important to me. I have more recently developed a love for photography. I also enjoy history, and, as a family, we enjoyed ‘camping’ trips to National Parks and historical sites. Our son, Chris, was married in July 2011; he and his wife, Monica, both graduates of Missouri University of Science and Technology, live and work in Cedar Rapids, IA. Our daughter, Ginny, received a Masters in English (Creative Writing) from Kansas State University in May 2014 and now lives and works in Wichita, KS.

Statement of Faith

I believe in God. I put my faith in God. I trust God ... the best I can. I believe that God is best understood by use of the doctrine of the Trinity, a concept that helps me make sense of my and the church’s experience of the One God – the One God who is experienced as Abba (Father) who creates, orders, sustains, and governs the universe; as Son who became flesh and dwelt among us, who is the definitive expression of who God is and of true humanity, who died on the cross, who was raised from the dead, who, through his life, death, and resurrection, redeemed humanity from the power of sin, brought healing to humanity’s brokenness, and reconciled people to each other and to God; as Holy Spirit who cleanses and empowers us, who comforts and guides us, who is God’s presence with us. I believe that humanity is sinful. In sin, humans are turned inward toward themselves both in pride and fear instead of outward toward God and others in humility, love, and trust. We are entangled in sin in such a way that we cannot free ourselves. Only by the power of God as revealed in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ can we be freed from the power of sin. This is our hope, that by the love and power of God we are redeemed, healed, and reconciled. I believe that the church is the community of those people who have experienced God’s love and power through Jesus Christ and who are called to witness to that love and power in the world. The church as the body of Christ is called to continue the ministry of Christ: to preach, to teach, to heal, to befriend the friendless, to love the unloved. I believe that the Bible is the authoritative witness to God and God’s will for us. The Bible is the standard by which we must measure other claims to truth. The Bible is an account in human words which witnesses to the community’s experience of God in life. I believe that the sacraments of the church are tangible signs of the invisible presence of God’s grace. Baptism signals God’s claim upon us and God’s welcoming and engrafting us into the community of faith. In the Lord’s Supper, Christ is truly and focally present, to those who believe, not in a physical sense, but spiritually by the power of the Holy Spirit. I believe that all people have a calling from God to be faithful to the will and purposes of God in all that they are and all that they do. God calls and equips us all to minister and serve in the name of Christ to the glory of God.
