Kindergarten Course of Study

Bible Positive Action for Christ Learning about God The kindergarteners will learn about God through the lives of the major characters throughout the entire Bible. Activity ideas will help the students comprehend and apply Bible truths. A key emphasis in this curriculum is establishing students in the Word of God so that they begin to find answers for themselves. The students will also memorize a Bible verse that begins with each letter of the alphabet. By the end of the kindergarten year, they will have memorized twenty-six Bible verses along with the Lord’s Prayer. In addition, students attend chapel once a week.

Language Arts A Beka Phonics, Reading and Writing Harcourt Brace (Storytown) materials will be used for remediation and enrichment, including Phonics Alive which is an Orton-Gillingham based program. Math Progress in Mathematics (Sadlier-Oxford) Progress in Mathematics facilitates the development of students’ conceptual understanding with an instructional plan that incorporates overarching learning progressions. This approach allows students to build on what they have learned each year, so they arrive at a fully-realized mathematical understanding. In the first half of kindergarten, children will study position, classification, comparison, patterns, and number recognition to 31. Later in the year, children will be introduced to a number of fundamental math concepts that will be built upon in subsequent years.

Science Purposeful Design, Science Discovery Lab Kindergarten science introduces students to hands on exploration of the world that God has created. They begin the year learning that God has equipped them with tools (their five senses) to explore and learn. The students are then introduced to the science behind the toys that they play with in their own homes: matchbox cars, play dough, bouncing balls, Legos, and several others. They continue throughout the year with unit studies on Living verses Non-living objects, Force and Speed, Seasons, Space, Insects, and Health.

First Grade Course of Study

Bible Positive Action for Christ Enjoying God’s Gifts First graders will focus on the many gifts of love provided for us by God. Emphasis will be on aspects of creation, our families, friends, possessions, Jesus Christ, and God's care for us. Bible is a part of everyday instruction just as academic instruction. There will be Bible-centered stories, workbook activities, and a weekly memory verse. In addition, students attend chapel once a week.

Language Arts Storytown (Harcourt Brace) Reading, Phonics, Spelling, Grammar, and Writing, including Phonics Alive which is an Orton-Gillingham based program. Handwriting Zaner Bloser The students will learn how to legibly write manuscript letters, numerals, words, and sentences.

The main focus in first grade is to be able to identify any two-digit number, understand that each digit in a two-digit number has a definite value, and be able to compute addition and subtraction facts.

Science Purposeful Design, Science Discovery Lab We follow the Purposeful Design Science Curriculum. Within this curriculum, students cover Physical Sciences with Movement and Machines. They learn how God established the seasons and how His creation responds to these seasons in their Earth Science unit. The students will cover a Space unit which introduces them to the planets, moon phases, constellations, and space travel. Within Life Science the students will cover units of Mammals and Birds. First graders will also cover a Health unit that allows them to learn about how God created them so wonderfully.

Social Studies A Beka My America and My World Children learn how our country was founded and what our basic freedoms are. They meet several famous American patriots and take a trip across America. Good citizenship is emphasized and reading skills are developed. Patriotic songs are included. Students are introduced to major countries and U.S. Territories.

Second Grade Course of Study

Bible Positive Action for Christ Finding God’s Promises Students will study the life of Moses through the book of Exodus. The promises of God will be evident as the Israelites and their leader see both victory and tribulation as they learn to trust God. Students will memorize a verse or a passage each week. Handwriting Zaner Bloser: Students will learn how to legibly write manuscript and cursive letters, numerals, words, and sentences.

The program places a key emphasis on the development of higher-order thinking skills and believes that varied approaches to problem solving strategies develop students’ strategic competence and help students build a true concept of what it means to “do” math.

Science Purposeful Design, Science Discovery Lab We follow the Purposeful Design Science Curriculum. The Second grade students begin the year with Physical Science studying about Energy and Light. They move into Earth Science, investigating weather and oceans. The ocean’s unit includes studies of marine life, and how God made these organisms special for living in the water. The second graders participate in “Scientist of the week” where they pick a lab to perform in front of their classes. This is an exciting time for all. They study vertebrates and invertebrates with their Life Science studies. Finishing the year learning about the magnificent body which God has created, students learn about Sound and Hearing, and Sight and Touch.

Social Studies A Beka Our America Second graders step back into history and learn what life would have been like in our country’s early days. They learn the history of our flag and of patriotic songs and holidays and study the lives of groups that made valuable contributions to our American heritage: the Pilgrims, American Indians, early colonists, pioneers, cowboys, and immigrants.

Third Grade Course of Study

Bible Positive Action for Christ Growing With God The lives of Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, and Daniel have a lot to teach third graders about the rewards of living for God. English Easy Grammar, Daily Grams and Daily Language Review The Easy Grammar program is unique in presenting prepositions before other parts of speech. By teaching students to identify prepositions and prepositional phrases before other parts of speech, it eliminates such problems as confusing the object of a preposition with the subject. Parts of speech are designated by underlining, circling, and making notations. In addition, it covers phrases, clauses, punctuation, capitalization, types of sentences, letter writing, and much more. Daily Grams provide daily reinforcement and review of grammar skills to ensure mastery learning. Handwriting Zaner Bloser Students will continue to practice cursive letters, numerals, words, and sentences.

In Grade 3, the concepts of multiplication and division will be further developed as well as addition and subtraction of larger numbers, and your third grader will be introduced to decimals. There will also be an increased emphasis on algebraic thinking. Other topics that are studied include: statistics, geometry, measurement, probability, and fractions. Special attention is given to critical thinking, problem solving, mental math, and journalizing.

Science Purposeful Design, Science Discovery Lab We follow the Purposeful Design Science Curriculum. Students begin the year investigating what Matter is with the Physical Science unit. They continue to explore Physical Science with a unit in Electricity and Magnets. The Earth Science units cover Rocks and Minerals, and the surface of the Earth. Students then take their studies far and beyond our atmosphere and learn about our Solar System. Returning to God’s creation, the students will investigate ecosystems and plants with in their Life Science Studies. The students will complete the year studying about Nutrition and the Human digestive system.
