Rounding third, heading for home, just about to score in my
last inning. My “bull pen” came through when we needed them
most, and all my “designated hitters” stepped up to the plate in
a big way.
Who makes a difference – You do! Do something for
someone else! The world can change through your efforts. It’s
a powerful way to feel good and reduce stress.
There’s an old saying “A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta
do”.
What does a “Man Gotta Do?” Really only one thing, a man
must decide who he’s going to follow, who he listens to, and
who or what authority he believes in. You Lions have decided
to follow Lionism.
It has been said:
A Lion is a man of vision and character
A Lion is a man of strength and power
A Lion is a man of faith and wisdom
A Lion is a man of heart and love
A Lion is a friend, a mentor, a warrior
Choices, decisions, crossroads! Yogi said “When you come
to a fork in the road, take it”. Where do we go from here? How
do we truly become the Lions we should be? Our fork in the
road is looming.
Why are you a Lion? Odds are it’s because someone asked
you to join. The MD-21 goal is 1,250 lions this year. Ask
someone today to be part of the Lions fellowship.
Welcome to the Prescott Noon Lions new Lion members.
Welcome to all you Lions who joined this year. You are the
Lions of the future. Without new blood this club would wither.
We need a supply of talent, new direction, and fresh thinking.
You new Lions can provide this for us.
Parting thoughts: This has been a great year. It’s been a fun
year. We accomplished a lot. We served. It has been an
honor and a pleasure to have served as your President this
year. I am exceptionally proud of you Lions. As International
Lions President Bob Corlew stated “We have more mountains
to climb”. Let’s continue to support our new incoming
President, Bob Welch, with the same spirit and enthusiasm you
offered to me.
Chuck Matthews,
President Prescott Noon Lions

The Fish First free fishing clinic was held on June
3, 2017 at Goldwater Lake.
The event is sponsored by The Arizona Game and
Fish in conjunction with the annual free fishing day
throughout Arizona. This was the first time that the
Prescott Noon Lions asked to participate and co-
sponsor the event and with approval of the Board,
prizes for the biggest fish, first fish of the day, smallest
fish and youngest fisherman were purchased and
awarded at the event. The Department of Game and
Fish stated that 191 people signed up to participate in
the event and the PNL and Evening Prescott Lions
who volunteered assisted many children and families
in instructing them on how to fish and everyone
seemed eager to learn.
The Department of Game and Fish supplied the
fishing poles, tackle and bait and even though there
was a heavy stocking of trout, only two fish were
caught for the event!! The kids had a great time as
Game Warden secured many raffle prizes from local
sporting goods stores and Walmart brought fishing
equipment and water for everyone!!
Warden Fogle expressed his deepest gratitude for
the assistance from the Lions and he stated that
without our help, the event would not have been such
a success.

Humphrey, Joe Maresh and
Bob Carlisi. The sons of
Bob Carlisi, Mike and Luc,
were also helping. Seven
Lions from the Prescott
Evening Lions Club were
also assisting the youth.

Prescott LIONS Clubs Pancake Breakfast & Centennial Celebration
Pancake Breakfast Chairman Lion Tom
Montague and his committee overcame
difficult challenges to have a successful
event. Road construction forced the
setting to the church parking lot.
Visibility of the event was not as good,
but the layout was well planned. Lighter
attendance was also seen at the
Territorial Days Plaza event, too.
Volunteer help was plentiful with
Lions from area clubs and a Boy
Scout Troop. Lively entertainment
included the band, Not 2 Shabby.
Despite the heat, Lion Bob Carlisi
was a lively addition as our Lion
mascot. Lion Doug George put
together an interesting display for
the centennial celebration, which
included a “100 Year Birthday cake.”

Prescott, Arizona
Prescott Noon Lions Club 68th Annual
Installation and Awards Banquet
Joining our celebration/
awards/induction dinner
were the following
guests:
D.G. Ken Leja and his
wife, Karen Leja,
President of the Evening
Lions Club, Zone Chair
Ellie Atwood, Lioness
President Marie Maresh,
and of course all the
lovely spouses of our
Lions.
Current 2nd V.P. Harry Gooding was busy making the
rounds to see that everyone was having a good time.
He need not worry; Harry did a fine job organizing the
event. He also recognized all the help he received.
After the opening ceremony, Lion Mike Hayden
recognized our recently fallen Lions. A certificate from
LCI was given to their families. On a shinier note,
President Chuck gave a centennial commemorative
coin to the lucky winner, Lion Jack McLain. Chuck also
recognized all of the Lions who joined our club in the
past year. Judging by these new recruits, our club has
a continued bright future ahead.

President Chuck
Matthews started the
awards proceedings
by recognizing all the
officers, directors,
past chairmen, and
others with special
duties. Then it was on
to the prestigious Melvin Jones Awards in
recognition of outstanding service. This
year four Lions received the honor: Lions
Kim Zimmerman, Doug George, Bob
Welch and Dick Beers (who wasn’t
present).
Usually only one member receives the
‘Lion of the Year’ award. This year the
recipient is someone who has done an
outstanding job as secretary, and not for
just one year, two years, or even three
years, but for four years. And to top that
off, ‘Lion of the Year’ Doug Ruckel has
volunteered to serve a fifth year.
Unfortunately, Doug was not present to
receive the award.
The next Lion is
someone who has
already served for
more years than
anyone in our club.
He has served in numerous positions and
undoubtedly has received many awards.
Despite all of this, you will not find a more
humble person. Lion Joe Funke was
recognized with a Lifetime Achievement
Award. In respect to this outstanding
Lion, everyone stood as Joe made his
way to the podium to receive the award
and a centennial commemorative coin
from President Chuck Matthews.
Lion Chuck chose an award
with a western slant when he
gave bolo ties with a 100 year
clasp to the following Lions for
their service: Mark Leathers,
Jimmy Duke, Doug George,
Tom Bentley, Lee Nidess, Lou
Nemeth, Joe Maresh, Tom Cardinal, Dan
Burt (cleanly shaven), Lynn Boutwell and
John Baudek (who was not present).
Plaques for officers and chairmen were
awarded to Lions Chuck Matthews, Bob
Welch, Harry Gooding, Bob Dressler,
John Schmitt, Jim Townsend, Mike First,
Paul Bauman, Steve Hodges, Kim
Zimmerman and Ken Gantz.
Finally, the last award announced is one
that is probably unique to our club: the
‘Most Disrespectful of the President’
Award. Displaying the good-natured
kidding of our club, there were
undoubtedly many Lions hoping to
receive this dubious award. Lion Lynn
Boutwell even pleaded openly to be
picked. But alas, the award went to
someone close to the president; maybe
too close, and that was the reason for the
selection. After all, sometimes people in
your own family give you the hardest time
of all. In this case, the recipient was
Chuck’s brother-in-law, Lion Buz
Williams.
D.G. Ken Leja also recognized someone
special who has gone beyond our club
to perform duties for several years as
the zone chairman. Lion Bob Hester
received an award for all the hard
work and many hours he spent in that
position.

With poetry in hand, D.G. Ken Leja called on
our new officers individually and described
their duties before they took an oath for their
new positions.
Our new president’s first move was to
acknowledge and honor those leaders who
came before him. Lion President Bob Welch
gave a heartfelt honor to the Lion who was his
sponsor, Lion Bill Parker. For many years Bill
never gave up on Bob becoming a Lion. Bill
knew very well the contributions and
leadership Bob would bring to the club. Then
Bob recognized outgoing President Chuck
Matthews and Past President Lou Nemeth for
their contributions.
Lion Mike First has been a member of our Lions
club for less than two years. In that short time he
recently completed a year as paper chairman and
has volunteered for another year in that position.
Mike has also served on the new committee of
the Random Acts of Kindness program.
Every Wednesday, you will see Mike wearing his
citizen on patrol uniform when he helps our local
law enforcement.

Lion Member Profile of Bob Dressler
by Lion Jerry Jackson
Costa Mesa’s loss became Prescott’s gain when it came to Bob
Dressler’s Lionism in the two locales. Looking back at the
California connection, he was active in the Costa Mesa Orange
Coast Lions Club from 2001 until he retired from his job there and
he and his wife Cathy moved to Prescott and he transferred to our
Prescott Noon Club on April 1, 2015.
And the former tail twister in Costa Mesa is now treasurer of our
club after assuming that job on July 1 of last year. “Several
months before last year’s installation dinner,” he said, “Chuck
Matthews asked me if I would like to be the treasurer of the club”
and he consented. “Chuck and I got to know one another because
of shredding at the Yavapai Regional Medical Center in Prescott
Valley,” where Bob has been a member of the weekly shredding
crew for two years.
Looking back, Lion Bob grew up in Bradley, Ill., a small town 60
miles south of Chicago, where “one of my favorite things to do
each year was to attend summer camp with my Boy Scout troop.”
And later in life, while living in Orange County, he became active
in Scouting with his son Jonathan, who is an Eagle Scout. And in
that era he held various leadership posts such as Scoutmaster,
District Commissioner, and Order of the Arrow Advisor to the
Chief. Also, in addition to his Lions club activities he joined the
Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the Elks Lodge.
As a young adult in Illinois, he earned an accounting degree at
a two-year business college prior to enlisting in the Army in 1969.
During his three years as an administrative specialist, his duty
stations were at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska, and Fort
Eustis in Newport News, Va.
Following his discharge from the Army, he moved to San Diego
and married Cathy, his high school sweetheart, on July 15, 1972,
at the All Hallows Catholic Church in La Jolla, so they will soon be
celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary. In addition to their
aforementioned son Jonathan, they also have a daughter, Lauren,
who lives in Orange, Calif., with her husband and two children.
Bob returned to college at San Diego State University, where he
earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and
accounting, and he and Cathy subsequently moved to Orange
County, where Bob accepted a position with Kenneth Leventhal &
Co., a CPA firm. He left Leventhal to become a corporate
controller for a real estate developer based in Irvine, and also
held similar positions with A-M Homes in Santa Barbara, Shea
Homes in Walnut, and Warmington Homes in Costa Mesa.
Bob states that he is “proud to be a member of the Prescott
Noon Lions Club because we actively serve the community
through a variety of projects such as making cash contributions to
charities, providing sight and hearing help to the needy, operating
the mobile eye care van, supporting the local food bank, random
acts of kindness, etc.,” and “I also enjoy working with my fellow
Lions who have a wide variety of work backgrounds and
interests.” And the Lionism outreach extends to Cathy, too, who is
a member of the Prescott Lioness Club that also meets at Plaza
Bonita.
In addition to their Lion and Lioness activities, traveling in their
RV is a “top drawer” endeavor with the Dresslers, and they
recently returned from such an adventure. Their destination:
Durango, Colo., to which they give high marks. Good times for a
pair of good people, you might say!
