1976 (33-20-2)

The Warrior baseball program gained full membership in the Far Western Conference and affiliation with the NCAA Division III to open its second decade of competition. With the top four pitchers return-ing, optimism ran high. The team returned from its Arizona trip with a 5-9 record in the midst of a six-game losing skid. The Warriors then began playing up to their po-tential and won 20 of the final 30 games on the schedule and were barely edged by UC Davis for the league title on the last day of the season. With a regular season record of 26-19, Stanislaus received another bid for postseason action. After opening the district playoff with a loss to Westmont College, the Warriors swept to seven consecutive come- from-behind wins to become the first-ever National Champion in Division III. The heart of the order (Dan Boer, Rusty Kuntz, Mel Anderson) was virtually unstoppable throughout the playoffs. Boer was honored as the MVP in the World Series and named first team All-American.

1977 (35-18-1)

The 1977 Warriors are gener-ally regarded as the finest team in the history of the program on the basis of outstanding balance. Seven starters batted .294 or better, the pitching staff compiled a record-setting 2.69 ERA with seven shutouts and the defense fielded at a sparkling .955 clip. The team repeated as conference runner-up and closed the year with 10 straight wins. With a 29-18

regular season record, the Warriors earned a trip to the West Regionals in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which coincidentally was coach Jim Bowen’s hometown. These Warriors were at their best in postseason play, devastating the regional oppositions with three one-sided victories (wins of 20-2, 10-4 and 22-1). The competition stiffened at the World Series, but three more consecutive wins brought CSU Stanislaus its second consecutive national championship. Leadoff man Rusty Kuntz — who batted .397 with 79 hits, 64 runs, 14 home runs, 47 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases during the season — was named World Series MVP and earned first team All-American honors.

Cal State Stanislaus qualified for the NCAA Division II West Region-als for the first time in program history after setting a school record with 37 wins and a 1-2 showing at the CCAA tournament.

The No. 4-seeded Warriors opened with host and sixth-ranked Chi-co State and lost to the Wildcats in a pitching dual. Marquis Fleming was solid with a six-hitter but Chico State prevailed 4-2.

Stanislaus was eliminated the next day by No. 4 Sonoma State, 10-4. SSU went on to win the West.

JOHN FARMER Catcher • 1976-77

John Farmer was a starting catcher on the 1976 and 1977 national championship teams. A graduate of San Luis Obispo High School and Cuesta Junior College, Farmer was said to be the best catcher who ever played at Stanislaus. “He was an outstandining defensive catcher at 5-feet-9. He was a very scrappy and competitive guy,” former head coach and Warrior Athletics Hall of Famer Dr. James Bowen said. “I remembered him going 4-for-7 from the plate in his two championship games. He was the best overall catcher ever to play here.” The Most Valuable Player award at the NCAA Division III National Championship has been named after Farmer, after he died in a plane crash in January 1978.

RON VERMEULEN Pitcher • 1977-78 Ron Vermeulen was a longtime teacher at Modesto’s Downey High School where he also served as the head baseball coach. He was a member of the 1977 national championship team and a key starter on the 1978 team that placed fourth in the country. “Ron pitched an outstanding complete-game two hitter in a 1978 regional game in Cedar Rapids to help the team return to the national tournament,” Bowen recalls. “He was a solid fastball-slider pitcher you wanted in the game when the chips were on the line. He was a key team leader and an outstanding baseball coach in his latter professional life.” Vermeulen passed away in 1996 after losing a long battle with cancer.

JIM BOWEN Head Coach • 1971-85, 1987-96

On Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, former Warrior head coach Dr. Jim Bowen, was honored by Cal State Stanislaus when his jersey number 20 was retired. Under Bowen, Warrior teams won 639 games, two NCAA National Championships and nine NCAA regional titles. During his tenure, student-athletes won in the classroom as well as on the diamond. For these outstanding achievements Bowen has been inducted into the CSUS and American Baseball Coaches Association Halls of Fame. A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he played on a state champion prep baseball team. He coached at the high school level for five seasons, and later was an assistant at the University of Iowa before coming to CSU Stanislaus. He has been inducted into the Hall of Fame at Thomas Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids. Coach Bowen was twice named National Coach of the Year, and seven times as Regional Coach of the Year. He was selected as an assistant coach for a United States Baseball Federation team that played in Caracas, Venezuela (’79), and the next year as head coach of the USBF team that played in Seoul, Korea. Dr. Bowen has spent 32 years as a tenured full time professor, nine of which he also served as chair of

the physical education/health department. He was also the first elected Speaker of the Faculty College of Education. Bowen passed away on Dec. 10, 2009 after a long illness at the age of 66. The War-riors are wearing coach Bowen’s initials on their sleeves during the season in his memory.

Honorary Warrior

DAVID GOMES“The Original Warrior,” 1966-Present

Affection-ately known as the “Original War-rior” public ad-dress announcer and official scorer, David Gomes was honored before the start of the Cal State Stanislaus baseball game against Cal State

Dominguez Hills on April 9, 2005. Gomes has been associated with Warrior baseball for more than 40 years. He has done it all with the baseball team. Working as an official scorer, statis-tician, public address announcer and for-mer driver, Gomes has seen more Warrior baseball games than any other individual, including traveling with former head coach Jim Bowen and his teams in 1976 and 1977 to the NCAA Division III National Championships Gomes, a graduate of California State University, Stanislaus, was elected into the first Warrior Athletics Hall of Fame class on Jan. 22, 2000. He has been associated with Warrior Athletics since 1966, working with the baseball team in the program’s first year. He has also been volunteering his time with the basketball programs, serving as one of the official scorers. Gomes was an employee of the Uni-versity since 1973 and retired as the In-terim Director of Financial Aid in 2007.
