Ming Hsieh Institute for Cancer Research. (2010-2011)Served on a committee appointed by Vice President of Research Randolph Hall that was charged with the initial selection of research proposals to be funded by the recently established Ming Hsieh Institute for Cancer Research. This assignment involved a series of meetings during January-August 2011 aimed at organizing the approach for the funding of several seed proposals from USC academic community. This also involved making recommendations on six proposals from a larger number of proposal submitted by the USC Cancer Research Community. Current PhD committees: Lena Hoober, Kyu Min Kim, Dean Glass, Derek Moy, Anton Shikmin (geology)Phong Trinh, Ming Li, Janet Olsen, Sergei Mukhin, Merve Yurdakan, Xiaojie Yan. Lee McAuliffe, Marc Iuliucci, Byungsoo Kim. (Dparment of Mat. Science and Engneering)_ Current Research Interests:

Polymer Membranes with Applications in Fuel Cells and Reverse Osmosis. We have shown that the indirect synthesis of blends of polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) and polystyrenesulfonic acid (PSSA) leads to self-assembly giving tough and transparent polymer composite membranes with superior properties in direct methanol oxidation fuel cells (DMFC's). Applications in reverse osmosis membranes through incorporation of nano objects in membranes synthesized through interfacial polymerization are being explored im collaboration with the group of Professor Pirbazari of the Department of Environmental Engineering, College of Engineering.

Self-Assembly of Polymer Systems through Fluorophilic Association. Self-assembling Fluorocarbon (RF) end-functionalized polymers that associate in the solid state through the formation of perfluorocarbon nano-clusters. The polymers are shown to self assemble to give large sized clusters exceeding 100,000 nm. When sheared, these clusters fall apart but reassemble providing new materials with unprecedented strengths. These systems have potential applications in the formation of otherwise immiscible blends.

Synthesis of Helical Polymers for Non Linear Optical Properties. We have explored the synthesis of [5]helicenes conjugated through triple bond to aromatic rings the polarity of which is variable through substitution reactions. As these chiral polymers slowly lose optical rotations, current plans involve modifications to produce polymers with persistent optical rotations for non linear optical properties.
