Establishing the biological status: Step 1

Reference values = per river type, the median values of metrics from the reference, potential reference and the best attainable conditions.
Past projects data were also incorporated to the classification, given that they belong to the same river type and their values are higher than the original reference values.
In case of types that cannot establish proper reference values, the value of 11 was adopted, by expert judgement. IPS=11 was a value extracted from both the available data and the relevant reference values of Spain.

Establishing the biological status: Step 2
Confidence level is assessed in all steps of classification of the individual BQEs.
At the sample level, the confidence level assessment usually arrives from the sampler
and/or the sample analyst. At the site level, the confidence level deals with the
justification of any inconsistency between the seasonal samples. Finally, at the water
body level, the confidence level reflects the robustness and the consistency of the
classification for a specific BQE.
Confidence level can take the values of:
_very confident (VM)
_moderately confident (M)
_not sure (UNC)
Classification results with an uncertain level of confidence are not taken into account.
