TITLE: PRESENTATION #5 – HOW TO REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINT
- UNDERSTAND RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GHG INTENSITY AND GLOBAL WARMING EFFECT
CURRENT LEVEL
TITLE: PRESENTATION #5 – HOW TO REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINT
- CLIMATE SCIENCE (1 OF 2)
•CO2 concentration to increase from
368 to between 540 - 1000 ppm.
•Temperatures to rise by between 1.4
– 5.8 0C globally
▪ Sea level to rise 9 – 88 cm
▪Global warming is expected to cause plant and animal species extinction,
agriculture yields to drop, food supply disruption and adverse human health

- TYPICAL SOURCE OF GHG EMISSIONS
Definition;
The total amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and indirectly support human activities, usually expressed in equivalent kg/tons of carbon dioxide (CO2eq).
The carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) allows the different greenhouse gases to be compared on a like-for-like basis relative to one unit of CO2. CO2eq is calculated by multiplying the emissions of each of the six greenhouse gases by its 100 year global warming potential (GWP).

EXAMPLE OF GREEN ACTION DOCUMENT
TARGET;B.E.I = 250.00 kWh/m2/yr by 2019M&V SCHEDULE;At 2 months interval
SHORT TERM
BASELINE;CALCULATED B.E.I = 280.00 kWh/m2/yr as at 2018
SECTOR;
ENERGY
GREEN INITIATIVES;1. Switch ON lights only when needed2. Ensure A/C temperature at 24oC all time3. Use nature lighting as maximum possible4. Reduce use of lifts and escalator
✓ Green Cleaning Programs
✓ Battery Take Back Programs
✓ Pesticide – Free Grounds Maintenance
✓ Low Mercury Lighting
✓ Electronic Waste
✓ Anaesthetic Agents

POLLUTION PREVENTION
1.Set temperature controls to suit the space and only have cooling/heating ON when required
2. Minimize heat wastage by closing doors and keeping radiators unobstructed
3. Maintain boilers and pipe-work for optimal operation
4. Revise control options — consider optimum start, compensators and TRVs
5.Try to ventilate and cool with natural methods
6. Check that heating and cooling are not operating at the same time
7. Switch off all non-essential lights
8. Find the most efficient lighting options
9. Install controls — consider time switches, occupancy sensors and daylight sensors
10. Wire lights to switch in parallel

ENERGY EFFICIENCY PRACTICES
11. Turn OFF unused electrical and office equipment
12. Consider life cycle costs when purchasing equipment
13. Check for air loss through the building fabric of floors, walls, roofs and windows
14. Repair gaps in the building fabric immediately so heated or cooled air is not escaping
15. Insulate as much as possible, including pipe-work
16. Get all staff involved and run an awareness campaign
17. Monitor energy usage by checking meter data and bills
18. Consider sub-metering, especially in energy intensive departments
19. Set targets and devise an action plan
20. Consider combined heat and power (Co-generation) if the hospital site has appropriate demand

ENERGY EFFICIENCY PRACTICES
• Encourage use of public transport for staff and patients
• Introduce car pool programs
• Organise eco-driving trainings to all drivers
• Use Biodiesel fuel (B10) to all diesel powered vehicles
• Introduce bicycle ride within hospital compound
• Introduce no idling for all stationary vehicles except ambulance with hospital compound
• Plan for electric car for heavy traffic use
