• Only a marginal reduction in the number of Cleantech deals (2008 - 2009)

• Relatively, the attractiveness of Cleantech sector vis-a-vis competing sectors such as IT and Biotech improved in

2009:

– The investments in Cleantech dropped to 2007 levels, favourable when compared to other sectors, where it dropped to

2003 levels

– Cleantech Venture Capital investments formed 25% of the private venture investments across all sectors

• At a regional level, the proportion of European and Israeli venture investments increased from 22% (2008) to 29%

(2009). For the same period, the share of North American investments declined from 72% to 62%

• The leading countries in terms of investments in Europe were UK, Norway and Germany.

• Globally, a significant decline was seen in solar technology investments in 2008-2009.

• The investments in Solar Energy sector now compete with investments in Energy Efficiency.

– In the US, Solar Energy was the top sector to attract investments, followed by Energy Efficiency and Transportation

– In Europe, Energy Efficiency was ahead of Solar Energy in terms of attracting investments

Pre-Revenue Commercialisation Expansion

• In 2008, the Nordic region experienced high levels of

investment in Cleantech, with only the UK and

Germany experiencing higher investment levels in

Europe

• A large portion of the companies in Nordic region were

found to be in the seed capital and commercialisation

stage, implying potential venture capital investment

opportunities. This is confirmed by a large proportion

(~90%) of the total investment coming from equity

investments as opposed to public grants in 2008.

• Norway and Denmark were the Nordic countries that

recorded an increase in Cleantech VC investments in

2009

In Europe, Nordic was amongst the Top 3 Investment Regions…
