• So why do we ever use steel?
• Kevlar requires one of the mosttoxic industrial solvents ever
– Very Expensive
– Difficult to produce
– So we’re “stuck with steel”

• Kevlar® is also used in drums, uniforms,trampolines, cables
• If the cost were low enough we could makeindestructible vehicles out of Kevlar® instead of steel!
• Most of the cost of Kevlar comes from thehorrendous solvent…. If we use smartersolvents, can we also make smarter polymers?
