What is Mat Foundation?

- a large footing extendingover a great area

- typically used in poor and

weak conditions of soil- reduce pressure on the

supporting soil therebyreducing total and

differential settlement andoften increasing totalbearing capacity.



Application of Mat

Foundation

It is recommended for the following

purposes:

bearing capacity of soil is low

walls of the structure are so close that

individual footings would overlap

it is used for large loads

individual footings would cover more

than about half of the construction area



Types of Mat Foundation

THIN MAT FOUNDATION These foundations usually support light

and intermediate structures on and near

the ground surface in unstable soil areas

such as expansive and collapsible soil.




THICK MAT FOUNDATION These foundations usually support

structures with more than 2 storey or

those that fall under the ‘heavy’ category

structures.




STIFFENED MAT

FOUNDATION

These foundations usually support lightstructures on heaving/shrinking and

compressible soil.




INVERTED MAT FOUNDATION These foundations usually support light

structures on especially soft soils.



Advantages of Mat

Foundation:

Raft or mat foundation is economical

due to combination of foundation and

floor slab.

It requires little excavation.

It can cope with mixed or poor ground

condition.

It reduces differential settlement.



Disadvantages of Mat

Foundation:

Mat foundation requires specific

treatment for point loads.

Edge erosion occurs if not treated

properly.



Construction Process:

1. The foundationstarts with a tightmat made from

rebar to create alattice of support.

2. The workers pour

concrete continuouslyover the foundationuntil the mat is entirelycovered.
