    INTRODUCTION TO TECHNOLOGY

Green-House by ColFibrex, is a prefabricated modular building system, made fromcomposite materials, which has 108 pieces carefully designed to generate multiplepossibilities of spaces, access, lighting, ventilation and connections.

Its configuration allows a wide range of architectural designs, with interior space dimensionsin width of 2.40 meters, 3.60 meters, 4.80 meters and 6.00 meters longitudinally, which canbe sized from 2.40 meters with increments of 1.20 meters according to needs and a heightvarying between 3.00 and 3.20 meters.

The magic of the 'green' and the effect of heat insulation, is provide by the earth sideembankments with geo-textile, complimented with a vegetable layer on top. Bothembankments and top layer are wrapped in a geo-textile weft open and covered entirely withgrass or other vegetation that stabilizes the Earth in the long term by the action of the rooting.

The Green-House system requires very simple footings: A running concrete beam, whichprovides a basis for anchoring the modules, provides enough support in most cases. Thesystem can thus be set on a concrete slab or over a conventional basement system.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    1. How long will the production of a Green-House take once the contract is signed and theretainer fee is paid ?

R/ A 100 square meter house takes 15 days to manufacture, but the exact delivery time must be

arranged with ColFibrex at the time of the signing of the contract, since it will depend on various

factors such as the production queue and the requirements of the customer with regard to optional

items. Normally the process from the payment of the retainer fee to delivery will take thirty days.

    2. How much time is required for the assembly and sealing of a Green-House ?

R/ It depends on the size and complexity of the Green-House; a 1 bedroom cabin may take three

days to assemble and seal (between three people), while a three-bedroom House can take 6 to 8

    days.

    www.ColFibrex.com

    3. What is the approximate weight per square meter (M2) of the modules that make up a GreenHouse ?

R/ The modules that make up the Green-House have an average weight of 40 kilograms per square

meter, if one takes into account the area of the house as per the floor plan. For example, a 100

square meter house will have a total weight of approx. 4000 kilos of composite material. From another

point of view, the weight of the modules as per the surface area of composite material varies from 10

to 15 kilograms per square meter, depending on the type of module.

    4. Is the Green-House system calculated structurally by engineers to withstand the weight ofearth and vegetation? How much more can they support ?

R/ Yes. The system is designed and calculated structurally by our engineers, using the latest

spreadsheet software and simulation software, in compliance with national and internationalstandards and the IBC, or international building code. Logically, these calculations are additionally

supported by actual tests of materials and structures already completed. In general, they are

designed to withstand the weight of 40 centimeters of soil and plants in the highest point of the

structure, which is the most critical. Additionally, they are also designed to support 200 kilograms or

more per square meter of live load, i.e., there may be people walking or sitting on them, as well as

light structures such as kiosks or pergolas. You can also specify houses Green-Houses for more

extreme conditions that can be buried completely underground with a meter or more of soil on top, at

    an additional cost.

    5. What level of seismic movements (Earthquakes) can Green-Houses withstand ?

R/ The specific conditions of each site and the relative location of each Green-House will influence the

amplification or moderation of the wave that causes an earthquake, and this must be taken intoaccount in any simulation of seismic resistance. However, considering that the Green-Houses are low

structures, completely integrated with the surrounding terrain and with an ideal geometry based on

curves and vaults, as well as a structural shell made of a flexible and strong material that can adapt to

any movement of the Earth, they are perhaps the strongest structures imaginable. Under normal

conditions, they can easily withstand an earthquake with a magnitude of 10 on the Richter scale.

    6. Can Green-Houses be built in hurricane prone areas, or areas with very strong winds ?

R/ Yes, provided they are in relatively high places that are not prone to flooding. The design of theGreen-House system has several characteristics that are ideal for wind resistance: on the one hand

the high weight of the Earth and its structuring with geo-textiles, and the way the modules are

anchored to the foundation beams, guarantee optimum resistance to the suction and buffetingproduced by strong winds. Also, the rounded shapes of the earth covering, its low height, the way it

integrates and literally becomes a part of the surrounding terrain, presents a profile with the lowest

possible resistance to the passage of the wind. Logically, the design of doors and Windows in these

areas must be equal in strength to the conditions that may arise.

    www.ColFibrex.com

    7. What is the expected durability of a Green-House ?

R/ The materials used in the modules are of the highest quality, and as long as the instructions of the

technical manual are strictly adhered to, and all additional materials (sealants, fasteners,

waterproofing, geo-textiles) are used according to specifications, you can expect a lifetime of use withvery little maintenance. With the passage of time, the necessary maintenance or repairs that are

needed are also very easy to handle. The most important thing to take into account is that the

material of the modules, (Fiber Reinforced Polymer, or FRP), is impervious to the passage of time; inthe favorable conditions given in the Green-House in which they are protected from the Sun and the

weather by the soil covering, the modules will last for many lifetimes.

    8. Are the Green-Houses susceptible to humidity problems and water filtration, being covered

    by soil and vegetation ?

R/ Not at all, provided you carefully follow the installation instructions, and recommended techniques

and materials are used. The Green-House structure consists of modules which are assembled using

stainless screws and epoxy and polyurethane adhesives and sealants, ensuring complete tightness. This is very important, since the material used in the modules that make up 95% of the structure is

completely waterproof, and the only possibility of filtration occurs in the joints. Following instructions

and carefully assembling the modules ensures a perfectly water-tight environment over time.

    9. What type of maintenance do the gardens covering the Green-House need, once

    construction is finished ?

R/ The type of vegetation used is always dependent on the climate conditions of the area where the

system is installed. As in any garden, if you use plants endemic to the region, in many cases you can

have zero or very low maintenance gardens. What must be taken into account in this case is that

when you build an earth-sheltered house such as the Green-House, the surface of the Earth reverts

to its natural state. You can decide to modify or improve these conditions, for example with improvedsoils, watering systems, and ornamental plants, or anything else that is feasible in your area.

    10. What is the exact shape of the walls in the Green-House system ?

R/ The walls are straight up to a height of 1.60 meters from which point they arch inwards forming a

vaulted space with a maximum height of 3.20 meters.

    11. Can you hang things like paintings, cabinets, orTVs from the walls ?

R/ Yes. Fastening elements, fixed to the walls with special adhesives, such as two part epoxy and in

some cases adhesive polyurethane sealants like those used for sealing the modules should be used

for this purpose. First clean and sand the surface of the module where you want to set the element toensure a good bond, and follow the instructions of the adhesive to be used. In the case of very heavy

elements that have a strong leverage effect that may exceed the capacity of the adhesive (as in thecase of a projecting arm for a 50" TV), it will be necessary to fix this item before covering the walls

with earth, in order to put through-bolts that then can be sealed from the outside according to

instructions provided by ColFibrex regarding the specific case. You can also use the areas where

there are unused electrical ducts for securing screws, since these pipelines form a double layer that

prevents the formation of any possible leaks.

    12. What is the process of structuring the earth walls and roofs of the Green-House? Can I use

the same soil from the excavations for the foundations and such ?

R/ The Green-House system is well suited to building on land with diverse topography, and often onsites that would hardly be suitable for other types of buildings. In sloped terrain, for example, the

system presents solutions that in many cases eliminate the need for costly retaining walls to form flat

areas where to build, since the House itself becomes part of the land. In most conventional systems it

is necessary to excavate and remove the top layers of soil, and then replace with fill materials suitablefor this purpose. In the Green-House system you can save the topsoil to then replace over the house,

as well as any other underlying soils, which can be easily modified and used to form the earth walls

and berms. The various treatments that can be used to structure the ground around the Green-House

depend on several factors that include the topography of the terrain and the types of soil contained in

the necessary excavations for the foundations of the Green-House. In general terms the land cover is

structured by means of geo-textiles where necessary to strengthen it, for example in berms with steep

slopes on level ground. This topic, which is relatively extensive because of the different types of soils

and terrains, is discussed in some depth in the Technical Manual.

    13. Can you plant trees on top of the Green-House ?

R/ Yes, you can plant trees species of moderate size with non-invasive roots in parts of the house

with a suitable depth of Earth. For example between connecting spaces, as well as on the earth

berms around the House. Directly on top of the spaces where there is little thickness of Earth, it is

preferable to plant smaller species. However, even in these areas the depth of Earth is approximately

40 centimeters, enough to plant large shrubs if you wish. It is important to get advice on local plants

and planting techniques from people in the region.

    14. Can you grow crops on the Green-House ?

R/ Yes, it is possible. The type of crops you can grow will always depend on the climate conditions of

    your area.

    15. What type of foundations is required by the Green-House system ?

R/ The typical foundation system, applicable in most of cases, is a simple reinforced concrete beam30 x 30 centimeters in section, that goes under all the modules and which also serves to anchor them.

However, a soil study is important (as for any construction), to determine the soils load bearing

capacity and other characteristics which may affect the foundations.

    16. How is the Green-House anchored to the foundation ?

R/ Green-House modules are easily anchored to the foundation beam using expansion bolts placed in

holes drilled into the beam, or if you prefer, anchor bolts can be fixed in these holes with epoxies

designed for this task. Any elements used must be stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized and

treated with anti-rust coatings. The relevant details can be found in the Green-House Manual.

    17. What material are the Green-Houses made of ?

R/ Green-House prefabricated modules are made of FRP, or Fiber Reinforced Polymer. We use

resins, which have a high content of recycled PET (Polyethylene Teraphthalate), the material used tomake the containers of soft drinks, water and other liquids. The environmental benefit obtained by

using these waste materials, is one of the many contributions of the Green-House system to the

environment. The resulting material is suitable for any climate, 100% waterproof, zero toxicity, and

perfectly inert chemically, as well as immune to pests, fungi, and rodents.

    18. Can Green-House walls be painted ?

R/ Yes. CoFfibrex delivers modules finished in white sandable gelcoat, which can be painted after a

light sanding with #150 paper. We recommend exterior-grade acrylic paint or other similar quality

    paint.

    19. Can new spaces and rooms be added on to a Green-House after it is finished ?

R/ Yes. The system supports the connection of additional modules, but future growth should be

planned from the outset so the appropriate parts can be left in place.

    20. What happens if a crack is accidentally made in one of the walls, can I fix it ?

R/ The force required to crack a module of the Green-House system is very high and is not likely to

happen accidentally, since it would require a strong blow with a steel cutting element or something

similar. However, if this were to happen the repair work is relatively simple with elements, which may

be obtained in a hardware or construction materials outlet.

    21. Are Green-Houses good for very hot or very cold climates? Can I get technical and

engineering documentation that endorses the extreme weather conditions that Green-Housescan withstand ?

R/ Yes. The system manual contains an extensive chapter on the climatic properties of the Green-

House system, with figures, graphs, and tests of the system under various conditions. In addition, itcontains an annex with design recommendations for different climates.

    22. What is the R value of the walls and earth roof of the system ?

R/ The R value or heat transfer resistance value of a Green-House, is approximately 1 per every 10

cm of Earth. A typical Green-House has an average of 60 centimeters between walls and deck, which

would give an R factor of 6. However, the thermal character of the mass of the Earth is quite different

from the materials designed and used principally for the resistance to the transfer of heat (R value)such as polystyrene or polyurethane foam. When changing from soil to a less massive "insulating"

material, you should understand the design performance with regards to heat capacity of the buildingand/or soil mass (K-value). A massive soil wall or roof can store heat energy to even out the

temperature swings of day--lightweight insulation does not perform this way. The thermal value you

get from 18 inches of soil far surpasses the 4.5 R-value (0.25 per inch). The use of earth as a large

capacity heat storage makes it possible not only to reduce such buildings demand for heating and

cooling energy, but also helps to preserve the local microclimate.

    23. Is it possible to have skylights in the system ?

R/ Yes, skylights are designed for some components in the system.

    24. Can air conditioning or heating systems be installed in a Green-House ?

R/ Yes, easily; in general terms, air conditioning and heating systems are supremely efficient in the

Green-House system, due to its thermal qualities.

    25. Can ventilation or air extraction ducts be installed wherever needed ?

R/ Yes, small diameter ventilation ducts with or without extraction fans can be installed in most areas

as long as they are specified in the initial design so that they can be incorporated into the production

    of the modules.
