    INTRODU TION

    India is the second Largest Producer of bikes inthe world.

    Majority of Indians especially youngstersprefer two wheelers rather than cars.

    After facing the worst recession in 1990 twowheeler industry bounced back with 25%increase in sales from 1995 and has always

    been an upward growing segment. Its is not only user friendly in Urban areas but

    plays a very vital role in the rural areas.

    Two wheeler sections in India have witnessed one of the more impressive

    levels of growth in respect of other segments of automobile. Among the

    leading manufacturers who have made them recognized on the Indian roads

    with the presence of their two wheelers are Bajaj Auto, Hero Honda

    Motors, Kinetic Motor, Yamaha Motor and TVS Motor. An important

    aspect that relates to all such leading manufacturers of the Indian two

    wheelers is that beside being the leaders in the Indian two wheeler market,

    The composition of the two-wheeler industry haswitnessed sea changes in the post-reform period. In1991, the share of scooters was about 50 per cent ofthe total 2-wheeler demand in the Indian market.

    Motorcycle and moped had been experiencing almostequal level of shares in the total number of two-wheelers. In 2003-04, , the share ofmotorcycles increased to 78 per cent of the

    total two-wheelers while the shares ofscooters and mopeds declined to the levelof 16 and 6 per cent respectively.

    India has not only emerged as a manufacturing hub

    of two-wheelers in the country it has also emerged as

    one of the top two wheeler exporters in the world.

    Some companies like the TVS motor company have

    put an extra thrust on exports. The company exports

    its products to some 38 countries in the world. The

    company has seen a 48% increase in exports from

    120 crores in 2004/2005 to 177 crores in 2005/2006. .The company is keen to focus on exports asan area of growth.
