Effective Teaching Strategies

English Language Learners

• Because English Language Learners (ELLs) now make up half of the school's population, teachers must look for effective ways to teach them academic English.

Sheltered Instruction

• Sheltered instruction can be an important factor in successfully bringing English Language Learners to grade level academic skills, content knowledge, and English proficiency.

Classroom ContentIn 3rd grade sheltered instruction classrooms, students will receive comprehensible core content instruction throughout the day. The content will be from 3rd grade curricula taught using instructional strategies that scaffold the content learning by building background knowledge and through the use of visuals, gestures, manipulative, paraphrasing, and technology. Each lesson will have clear grade level, content and language objectives.

Language Development

Because sheltered instruction provide a framework for language development, we can begin each lesson with an introductory activity that assess our students knowledge in a non threatening and non graded format, as this will allow us to evaluate our students skill set.

Visual Directions

Visual directions support the needs of all learners in any classroom.  They help students to be prepared for the lesson, and outline what to expect by guiding them through what will need to be done, how to work on a specific task independently, how much time to spend on an assignment, where to turn the work in, and what to do when finished.  Students can always refer to these directions, and unnecessary interruptions and disruptions can be avoided.  Using visual directions supports classroom management providing structure and scaffolding.

Having an interactive computer station in the classroom allows computers to be available whenever the students need them, enabling teachable moments throughout the day.

A computer laboratory is used for exploring computer skills. Unlike computer station in the classroom, there may be technical assistance in a lab for helping students. A computer lab also allows more students simultaneous access.
