Pak Thong Chai Festival
Festival, Pak Thong Chai, Korat
As a change from the week long celebration in Korat, I went along to see the dance and song spectacular in Pak Thong Chai.
The story goes that, a hundred years or so ago, the local Thai army was lured away from town by the advancing Burmese army which then attacked the town.
Princess Suranaree arranged for the women of the town to make an evening's entertainment for the Burmese.
When the soldiers were drunk, the women killed all of them, thus saving the town and Thailand. Suranaree, known usually by her nickname of Yamo, has been revered in Korat province ever since.
The main evening's celebration in Pak Thong Chai consists of local song and dance, a re-enactment of the attack on the women and children and the subsequent slaughter of the Burmese.
The climax of the evening was a display of traditional dance by 800 local ladies of the town all dressed in identical gold coloured costumes followed by a fireworks display.
