What is an Apprenticeship?

•An Apprenticeship is a job with an accompanying skills development programme (contained in a recognised framework).

•Employers will be centrally involved in its design, development and delivery.

•Allows the apprentice to gain real and relevant experience in a paid, productive job whilst gaining theoretical knowledge and qualifications.

•The mix differentiates the Apprenticeship experience from training delivered to meet narrowly focused job needs.

•On completion apprentice must be able to undertake full range of duties, in range of circumstances appropriate to the job, confidently and competently to a high standard expected by the employer.

Basics about Apprenticeships

National Apprenticeship Service

•Apprentices are employed by you and paid a wage - minimum of £2.65/hr

•This can be a permanent contract or fixed-term for duration of Apprenticeship

•Apprentices are on a structured, industry-standard training programme

•Duration of Apprenticeship varies according to level and ability – from 12 months to four

years

•Three parts to Apprenticeship – NVQ, technical certificate and key skills, available at levels 2-

•Some Apprenticeships require day release, and others are delivered ‘on-site’ in the

workplace

•Available for new or existing employees where there is a requirement for significant new

knowledge and skills and in most cases can start throughout the year
