Maximizing Agricultural Revenue and Key Enterprises in Target Sites (MARKETS)

• MARKETS II April 2012 – March 2017• Follow-on from:

MARKETS project: 2005 – 2010 & and Bridge to MARKETS II: December 2010 – April 2011

Objective: Increase private-sector participation and investment, raise incomes, increase employment, promote food security and reduce poverty

MARKETS has six inter-related components

Producers’ Capacity Development and Organizations: – build capacity of smallholders and strengthen cooperatives and producers’ associations

Agricultural Inputs: – address access to basic farm inputs, fertilizer, seed, fish feed, equipment and irrigation systems

Technology Generation and Deployment– Innovations that offer the greatest return on investment for smallholders and agribusinesses (high yielding, drought/pest resistant seeds, drip irrigation, urea deep placement)

Water and Soil Management: rehabilitate small irrigation systems, support water user associations, introduce and promote sustainable water and soil management techniques

Access to Finance: facilitate commercial lending to smallholders and agribusinesses support the GON’s NIRSAL (credit guarantee and risk insurance) program

Innovation Fund: grants available to associations of farmers, producers and processors to support above components and to promote innovative partnerships

NIGERIA EXPANDED TRADE AND TRANSPORTATION PROJECT

• NEXTT October 2012 to September 2016• Follow-on From:

Nigerian Expanded Exports Program (NEEP) 2009-2011

Objective: Support the Nigerian government’s efforts to expand trade domestically, within the ECOWAS sub-region and beyond, and improve its efficiency so that trade, particularly in agricultural products, can provide inclusive economic growth and development of Nigeria

NEXTT has three inter-related componentsComponent 1:Lagos-Kano-Jibiya (LAKAJI) Transport and Agricultural Growth Corridor Improvement – Remove bottlenecks to movement of agricultural goods from the ports in Lagos along Nigeria’s main trunk road through Kano up to the Niger border

Component 2:Trade Policy and Trade Facilitation Support – Increase the capacity of Nigerian Government officials on trade policy facilitation

Component 3:Export Expansion Support – Enhance the capability of small and medium enterprises to expand export

Agriculture Growth Corridor

• Catalyze agribusinesses investments that benefit from improving performance of the LAKAJI transportation route and the agricultural productive endowments of the nine states along the corridor.

• Increased agricultural productivity, provide transport and logistics solutions for producers and processors of staple crops, improve post-harvest management, create jobs and contribute to national and regional food security.

USAID MARKETS Past Rice Activities in Kwara State

• Activities took place in Patigi, Edu, and Ilorin South LGAs• Worked with 16,000 farmers • Increased rice yield from 1.7 to 4.5 mt/ha resulting in increased

productivity, income and jobs• 120 farmer groups formed and supported• Provided training on production, group dynamics and leadership• Strengthened linkages between small processors in Patigi and Lade with

Olam in Benue state• Facilitated linkage to agro-input and credit sources

USAID MARKETS Past Aquaculture Activities in Kwara State• Partnered with Association of Fish Farmers and Aquaculturists of Nigeria

(AFFAN) Kwara State Chapter• Provided training on brood stock development and fish management for African

Mud catfish• Provided training in postharvest processing (smoking, drying, packaging, labeling)• Fish farming as a business: farm record keeping, costs, yields and income

surveys• Trained Trainers on Package of Practices on catfish production• Prepared aquaculture buyers’ guide (ABG)• Improved aquaculture commercial business practices (quality fish feed,

fingerlings, feed management, processing)

RiceAquaculture

Support 198 members of AFFAN-Kwara with training on water quality management, fish health and disease control, floating cage and tank culture system of tilapia, and improved hatchery techniques. Also link farmers to inputs and end markets.

Mobilize and train 5,000 farmers on improved production, facilitate access to quality seeds and agro-input, and link farmers to processors in Patigi and Lade, and Kohath Investment Group in Niger State.

MARKETS II Planned 2013 Activities in Kwara State

Sorghum CassavaNetwork and build the capacity of 500 farmers to produce quality and quantity sorghum for Aba Malting Plant (AMP). Train farmers on modern cultivation methods, group dynamics and leadership, and on NAEC.

Support cassava farmers with trainings on cassava production and field management, and link them to quality stem cutting, inputs and credit for farmers in 2014

MARKETS II Planned 2013 Activities in Kwara State

USAID-Kwara State Areas of Collaboration

• Increase productivity and income from target crops through the introduction of improved technologies, management practices and post-harvest handling

• Improve the agricultural input supply chain for seed and fertilizer working with Notore and other suppliers

• Facilitate agribusiness investments particularly in the Agribusiness Corridor/Agriculture Growth Corridor

• Increase access to credit for small farmers and processors

USAID-Kwara State Areas of Collaboration

• Build institutional capacity of the agricultural extension agency (Kwara ADP), farmers organizations and agribusiness associations

• Work closely with local service providers like Agricultural Business Concept (ABC)

• Strengthen market linkages particularly for small scale processors in Patigi and Lade, and Kohath Investment Group

• Sign Implementation Agreement with National Centre for Agricultural Mechanization (NCAM) for research, testing and demonstration of appropriate technology for target crops
