Histopathology

• Expansion and infiltration

• Round cell population

• Abundant cytoplasm

• Round vesicular nuclei

• Prominent multiple nucleoli

• Rare mitoses

• Anisokaryosis and anisocytosis

• Little intra-epithelial involvement


Special Stains

• ZN and Fites acid fast stains were negative

• Considered cell size and plasmacytoid differentiation as indication of plasma cell tumor or lymphosarcoma

• Recommended immunohistochemistry


Monoclonal CD3

IMHC Results

• CD79 did not produce staining in the avian splenic control or the intestinal infiltrate

• BLA.36 did not produce staining in the avian splenic control

• CD3 polyclonal and CD3 monoclonal stained splenic control tissue and the neoplastic cells


Diffuse Intestinal T cell Lymphosarcoma


Outcome

• Owner elected euthanasia after seven weeks of chemotherapy


Discussion

• LSA is rare in birds but typically presents as cutaneous or peri-orbital lesions

• Not thought to be virally induced in psittacines


Discussion

• No previous reports of diffuse T cell intestinal lymphosarcoma in psittacines

• Prognosis is poor despite chemotherapy as with the T cell immunophenotype in mammals.

• Unique findings in this case included gammopathy and lymphocytic leukosis


Monoclonal Gammopathy (Beta)

• Might have more strongly supported B cell origin

• Been reported twice before with psittacine T cell lymphosarcoma

• Unlikely to result from unidentified infectious etiology
