Lang Lang

Lang Lang has inspired millions with open-hearted, emotive playing, whether it is in intimate recitals or on the grandest of stages. The discovery of music pro-pels Lang Lang to what he calls “his second career”: bringing music into the lives of children around the world, both through his work for the United Nations as a Messenger of Peace focusing on global education and through his own Lang Lang International Music Foundation.

Lang Lang has been featured on every major TV network and in magazines worldwide. He has performed for international dignitaries including four US presidents, President Koehler of Germany, Queen Elizabeth II, former French President Sarkozy and more.

He has been added as one of the World Economic Forum’s 250 Young Glob-al Leaders, and been honoured with Honorary Doctorates from the Royal College of Music and Manhattan School of Music, the highest prize award-ed by China’s Ministry of Culture, Germany’s Order of Merit and France’s Medal of the Order of Arts and Letters.

Manuel López-Gómez

Conductor Manuel López-Gómez began his musical life in violin, piano and chamber music and composi-tion at the age of 8. His talent for conducting was no-ticed early on and he has distinguished himself as a conductor at the front rank of young talent.

Manuel has also had conducting engagements with the Washington National Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, Brussels Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Seoul Philharmonic, and Or-chestre Philharmonique de Radio France. He is increasingly recognized not only for his groundbreaking work as National Music Director of El Sis-tema in Colombia, but also as a guest conductor of visionary and inspiring capabilities.

Manuel visits South American orchestras regularly. Active also in opera, he conducted the world debut of the orchestrated opera Atahualpa in Lima, Perú, where he will soon lead a production of Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette.

Sting

Composer, singer-songwriter, actor, author, and activist, Sting has received 16 Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe, an Emmy and three Oscar nominations and sold close to 100 million albums from his combined work with The Police and as a solo artist. A member of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, he will receive the Kennedy Center Honors in December. He has appeared in more than 15 films and authored two books, including The New York Times best-selling memoir Broken Music. His fourteenth solo album is inspired by the story of The Last Ship – a new musical opening October 26 at the Neil Simon Theatre, marking Sting’s debut as a Broadway composer. His support for human rights organizations mirrors his art in its universal outreach. Along with wife Trudie Styler, he founded the Rainforest Fund in 1989 to protect both the world’s rainforests and the indigenous people living there.

Alec Baldwin

Since 1980, Alec Baldwin has appeared on stage, in films and on television and has received a Tony nom-ination (A Streetcar Named Desire, 1992) an Oscar nomination (The Cooler, 2004) and has won two Emmy awards, three Golden Globes and seven consecutive Screen Actors Guild Awards as Best Actor in a Com-edy Series for his role on NBC-TV’s 30 Rock. His films include The Hunt for Red October, Glengarry Glen Ross, Malice, The Edge, It’s Complicated, Blue Jasmine, among many others.

Baldwin is a 1994 BFA graduate of Tisch and received an honorary doctor-ate in 2010.

He is also the radio announcer for the New York Philharmonic.

Baldwin has two daughters, Ireland Elliese Baldwin and Carmen Gabriela Baldwin. He is married to Hilaria Thomas Baldwin.

Lang Lang International Music Foundation

Our organization was created over 6 years ago to inspire and motivate the next generation of classical music lovers and performers. One of my true passions is to take new and extraordinary talent and help develop their musical gifts to a level the world appreciates. I am very fortunate to share Lang Lang’s vision in building self-confidence and a drive for excellence in our youth.

The Foundation operates with the conviction that music is a universal language and that music can open opportunities for communication, un-derstanding, and acceptance. We aim to ignite a passion for music in our children so that they can be leaders in bridging cultural gaps and helping unite local and global communities. Our hope is that cultural exchange through music, over time, will translate into greater cultural awareness and social development.

The heart of the Lang Lang International Music Foundation are its priority programs:

• Music Education Program in Public Schools: Lang Lang’s Keys of Inspiration

• Young Scholars Program

• 101 Pianists

• Junior Music Camp

• Piano Masterclasses

• Unique music events

Thank you very much for supporting our mission and work.

I wish you an unforgettable evening!

Message from the Secretary-General for United Nations Day, 24 October 2014

The United Nations is needed more than ever at this time of multiple crises. Poverty, disease, terrorism, discrimination and climate change are exacting a heavy toll. Millions of people continue to suffer deplorable exploitation through bonded labour, hu-man trafficking, sexual slavery or unsafe conditions in factories, fields and mines. The global economy remains an uneven playing field.

The founding of the United Nations was a solemn pledge to the world’s people to end such assaults on human dignity, and lead the way to a better fu-ture. There have been painful setbacks, and there is much work ahead to realize the Charter’s vision. But we can take heart from our achievements.

The UN Millennium Development Goals have in-spired the most successful anti-poverty campaign ever. United Nations treaties addressing inequali-ty, torture and racism have protected people, while other agreements have safeguarded the environ-ment. UN peacekeepers have separated hostile forces, our mediators have settled disputes and our humanitarian workers have delivered life-saving aid.

At this critical moment, let us reaffirm our commit-ment to empowering the marginalized and vulner-able. On United Nations Day, I call on Governments and individuals to work in common cause for the common good.

Ban Ki-moonSecretary-General of the United Nations
