Rebekah Scheinfeld, JD, MBA Commissioner Chicago Department of Transportation Rebekah Scheinfeld was appointed Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) by Mayor Rahm Emanuel in January 2014 with the direction to continue the critical work of making sure Chicago has a strong, vibrant, accessible transportation network that provides a foundation for a thriving economy in the 21st Century. Rebekah has a broad background in urban development issues, working in both the public and private sectors and in a variety of policy areas including transportation, infrastructure investment, housing, open space, and real estate. With over 20 years’ experience in structural engineering and architecture, her background includes design, investigation, and evaluation of existing structures, including seismic assessments and upgrades, and a passion for preservation of historic and landmark structures. Amanda mentors students studying Historic Architecture in the Design Studio at UW-Milwaukee in structural engineering and rehabilitation of historic buildings. She has worked with high school teachers through Project Lead the Way and mentors future female leaders through Girls on the Run and Kohler’s College Intern and STEM outreach programs.

From small community facilities, to campus buildings for premier academic and research institutions, to groundbreaking new transit stations and civic and urban spaces, to recreational trails that connect vibrant neighborhoods; her exploration into the power of how the built environment can improve our daily lives has produced distinctive structures that have become cultural icons. Her work has an international reputation in design of institutional and public buildings and has been exhibited and published in national and international journals, books, newspapers and web media. Her building designs have received numerous honors including 4 Institute Honor Awards from the American Institute of Architects and over 40 AIA Chicago Design Awards. Her work has received significant sustainable building awards including two AIA COTE Top Ten Green Project awards.
