Welcome to Tubman’s third annual Starlight Soiree - “Light up the Night,” honoring the young people who guide, lead and serve in Tubman’s Violence Prevention Programs.

One in four teens will experience dating violence, stalking, or harassment in their preteen and teen years. It is critical that these youth have the opportunity to develop the skills they need to form positive relationships and learn how to regain safety and happiness. Since 1990, Tubman has partnered with Twin Cities schools - - now over 50 area high schools, and reaches 8,000+ students every year with our well-tested Violence Prevention curriculum.

This evening, let’s celebrate some of the best and brightest. These are often youth who ‘learned’ about violence in their own lives, relationships or schools through Tubman’s school curriculum. But they decided to take action themselves, to be role models and to learn and commit to helping their peers develop solid skills and stop relationship violence before it starts.

Three years ago, the students decided to start Tubman’s Movement for Vio-lence Prevention (MVP). They became certified Youth Educators through more advanced Tubman training classes, shadowing staff, and initiating new school projects. The training equipped them with the knowledge and resources to be safe and happy themselves and help educate their peers about healthy rela-tionships. The MVP teams are constantly expanding. And...they are changing school cultures, one class at a time!

Tonight we hope you are inspired as you learn more about Tubman and thewonderful youth who serve to change their own lives and others, andthat your investments here will make a real difference in the lives ofthe next generation and our future. We also hope YOU have fun!

Thank you to our generous sponsors, phenomenal event committeevolunteers, and donors who made this event a reality. Please enjoy thefood, fun, and friends as you do good in supporting the safety andhappiness of others! You make it all possible. Enjoy!

Did you know?Females between the ages of 16 and 24 are more vulnerable to dating violence than any other age group, at a rate almost triple the national average.

How to Bid – It’s Fun and Simple! When you are ready to place a bid, simply enter the bidder number that is located on your name badge to log in.

Once you are logged in, you can place a bid by the minimum required or you can place a maximum bid (see Bidding Strategy).

Once your bid has been placed, you will be immediately notified if you are the winning bidder, or if you have been out bid by another bidder’s maximum bid.

Bidding Strategy – Two OptionsYou can bid the traditional way by increasing the bid by the minimum bid amount, or you can set your maximum bid amount.

When you place a maximum bid, the system bids for you against other bidders until your maximum bid is reached.

Once your maximum bid has been exceeded, you are no longer bidding on that item until you place a new bid.

Placing a maximum bid is ideal for guests who would like to place a single bid on an item and not worry about checking back to see if they are still the top bidder.

Bidding LocationsWireless Bidsheets – These are located in front of each item in the silent auction and replace the traditional paper bid sheet.

Bidding Kiosks – In two locations there are bidding kiosks. At a kiosk, a bidder will be able to check the status of all of their bids, increase their bids if they’ve been outbid, browse the entire auction catalog and place new bids, or make a donation.

SmartBid smartphone – Guests are able to register their personal smartphones and use them to browse, shop and receive updates from the auction. See further instruc-tions below.

SmartBid Smartphone Bidding Sign Up Instructions1. Locate the SmartBid smartphone bidding sign up station near the silent auction.2. Give your cell phone number to the volunteer working the station.3. In less than one minute you will receive a text message. In that text message will be a link. Click on that link and a web browser on your phone will open bringing you to the login page.4. Once completing the login you will be directed to the SmartBid home page.

SmartBid Smartphone Bidding FeaturesPlace a bid – From your phone you will be able to browse the silent auction by category and place a bid on any item. Simply click the “Browse Auction” icon from the SmartBid home page and find the item you’d like to bid on.

Receive outbid notifications – If another bidder outbids you on an item you will receive a text message notifying you that you’ve been outbid. In that message will be a link directing you to the item you’ve been outbid on where you will be able to place a new bid if you desire.

View the status of your bids – Quickly view the status of bids you’ve placed on one screen by clicking the “My Bids” icon. If your bid is no longer winning you can simply click on that item to place a new bid.

Your ItemsIf you win any silent auction items, an invoice will be delivered to your table during dinner. Items must be paid for tonight at the checkout tables located on the Metrodome field. Items must be taken with you tonight unless arrangements are made with Tubman event staff.

All sales are made “as is” and are final. There will be no exchanges or refunds on items. Some items such as travel packages and gift certificates have restrictions or expiration dates which should be noted and planned for accordingly. If applicable, arrangements for items requiring the scheduling of a date should be arranged as soon as possible with the donor to obtain desirable times.

Live Auction Rules

To bid, raise your program with your bid number to attract the attention of the auctioneer and spotters. The auction is fast-paced, so act quickly! The auctioneer will acknowledge the highest bid. At that time, the item is sold to and belongs to that top bidder.

All sales are made “as is” and are final. There will be no exchanges or refunds on items. Please keep in mind that many items have restrictions or expiration dates on their use. Items cannot be redeemed until payment is made.

Winning bidders must pay for their items at the checkout tables before leaving this evening. Guests will receive their items upon payment. Items paid for are the responsibility of the winner and must be taken home this evening unless other arrangements are made with Tubman event staff.

The auctioneer reserves the right to modify the rules of the auction at any time. In the event of bid disputes, the auctioneer’s decision is final.

Checkout tables are located on the field of the Metrodome.

Did you know that an estimated one in four teens will experience dating violence, stalking, or harassment? Tonight we celebrate the youth who participate inTubman’s Voices in Prevention (VIP) and Movement for Violence Prevention (MVP) programs. These programs help prevent dating violence and bullying through support, education and leadership opportunities for thousands of youth in our community. Tubman staff work in schools and community centers across the Twin Cities to deliver hope and ignite action to prevent violence and create networks of safety.

During the preteen and teen years, young people are learning skills they need to form positive relationships with others. This is an ideal time to promote healthy relationships and prevent patterns of dating violence that can last into adulthood (Centers for Disease Control, Teen Dating Violence Prevention, 2012). We all are aware of the cost of not supporting these efforts and the long-term emotional, physical, and financial consequences as a result if we fail to act.

Tonight during our special giving moment you will have the opportunity to make a gift in support of Tubman’s VIP and MVP programs. Our goal of $22,000 will help bring the six-week healthy relationship curriculum to over 600 students.

Special Giving Moment:Light up the Night for Youth

Navigating Future Paths Award

Dr. Patricia A. Harrison is currently the Director of Research for the City of Minneapolis where she conducts student surveys and tests, analyzing adolecent behavior and trends with the goal of improving education. Her research is always grounded in the best interest of the community, working to support and respond to the voices of youth being served.

Over her career, Dr. Harrison has established herself as one of the most significant predictors of needs of youth in the state. The data she collects is not always easy--thoughts of suicide, drug use, family violence--but absolutely critical for understanding and improving education. Few people are as quiet and unassuming and have had as much positive impact on young people throughout the state as Dr. Harrison.

Roseville Area Middle SchoolAkedia Merrill and Monica SchliepMonica Schliep, a health teacher, is one of Tubman’s teacher-leaders. She is a super supporter of Tubman’s in-school VIP curriculum classes, and work at Roseville Area Middle School. Her students always go above and beyond in their involvement with violence prevention. Akedia, an 8th grader at RAMS, is a very special example this year. Akedia submitted a video to the VIP Healthy Relationship Awareness Video/Poster Contest, and she won first place in 2012. She recorded and performed a song she wrote for the contest about family events that took place in the past. Akedia is a most eloquentspeaker and leader about her commitment to violence prevention, especially for young people.

Mounds Park AcademyAmanda MagistadAmanda is a very dedicated young woman. After learning about domestic violence and its consequences in her native Colombia, Amanda became very interested in Tubman and the work that we do. She signed up for Tubman’s ‘Movement for Violence Prevention’ training. She bravely shared her past and expressed her interests in working with this topic in the future. Since, Amanda has been the co-facilitator and co-organizer for Action Day to End Violence Against Women at the State Capitol. She made posters for the rally in the rotunda, helped put together a lobbying packet for youth, and learned the process of legislation and organization. In addition, she speaks in local schools on the topic of domestic violence. Now Amanda has begun legislation work in her native country of Colombia to redefine domestic violence laws. She is graduating this year and will attend Occidental College in California.

North High Community Education ProgramCierra Sherman and Ahmani CurtisCierra and Ahmani are 11th grade members of the ‘Everyday Leaders—Teen’s Group’, from the North High Community Education’s after school programs. Tara Jackson, faculty facilitator, leads the group and they chose violence prevention as their topic for the year. In November they went through MVP training and then created an event for the shelter and transi-tional families at Tubman Center West. They wrote and performedpoems, songs, and stories, and then they engaged the kids in games and activities. The families had a great time. Cierra and Ahmani continue to perform poems and spoken word pieces at various open mic events in Minneapolis.

St Croix Valley ALCPaola Segura and Laura BuysPaola and Laura went through Tubman’s ‘Movement for Violence Prevention’program, when St. Croix Valley ALC organized a school-wide MVP training for all interested students. Paola had already done Tubman’s Voices In Prevention Curriculum, and Laura became among the most skilled discussion leaders on those topics that are the most difficult. But both wanted to do more.

They decided to prepare a video for Tubman’s teen dating violence awareness contest called Healthy Relationships Awareness Video Contest 2011. Together they wrote, directed, cast, and edited a Public Service Announcement video about Teen Dating Violence. And they won! Paola used her winnings to buy video equipment, and continues to make inspirational and motivational videos for local and state-wide competitions, and Laura has since graduated and works on video projects in her spare time. Laura sends her greetings--her high school graduation party is also tonight!

Coner Patterson – Coner did Tubman’s in-school VIP curriculum and is now a highly trained MVP youth leader. His efforts define what MVP Action Team means. He has proven to be highly effective in engaging his classmates at St. Croix Valley in understanding and changing their thinking and actions around teen dating violence and domestic violence. Coner is writing a paper on teaching methods this year, and we hope he will join our staff in teaching and leading lessons with our young people this summer. Coner hopes to enter the seminary and become a youth leader and teacher after he graduates.
