After a year away, welcome back live to the “Night of Lights” a magical time where we join together to light up Downtown with the iconic Santa and His Reindeer, the Merry Christmas Wreath, Northern Lights, and many more. The evening wouldn’t be complete without the Ringing of the Bells and the Parkview Field Holiday Fireworks. Also, this year, we welcome a new lighting partner to our holiday showcase. Be sure to visit The Lighting of Kris Kringle Village at Arts United Plaza.

The Night of Lights includes heartwarming activities throughout the afternoon and evening. Warm up with Cookies & Hot Chocolate or enjoy a special outdoor holiday concert with Aleena York and Keegan Ferrell. Don’t miss the kickoffs of both the Festival of Gingerbread and Festival of Trees. Participate in activities like Sensory Friendly NOL at Promenade, A Taste of Kilwins Christmas, Santa’s Workshop, the Holiday Open House, Make A Snow Globe, or Santa at the Train Station.

As with any performance the thrill is when the lights go up. But that moment of excitement starts with an adventure behind the scenes, the unsung heroes behind the magic.

So it is with the Santa display that hangs on the PNC Bank building’s north façade for several weeks of the Christmas season. Every year, tens of thousands of people make time to enjoy the sparkling lights of Santa and his reindeer, which literally happens with the push of a button. The iconic image of Santa’s sleigh brightens the spirit of even the grinchiest among us.

For Greg Finner, turning on the lights is the end of the beginning. For the last 16 years, the electrician at Shambaugh & Sons has been in charge of the team

who gets the display up and running. Santa and his reindeer spend most of the year in a temperature regulated warehouse at Do It Best Corporation’s headquarters in New Haven. Recognizing the importance of this Fort Wayne tradition, the trustees of the English-Bonter-Mitchell Foundation have annually committed to covering the costs for storage and installation.

“I absolutely look forward to it!” said Finner, 63. “I’ve seen people come out in the rain, sleet and wind.”

Finner got involved when there was a call for volunteers. Coincidentally, the lighting ceremony from years’ past sometimes happened on his birthday. However, as a lifelong Fort Wayne resident, Finner’s downtown experience as a

child centered around the Christmas window displays instead of the Santa exhibit, because it was kept in storage.

The display was created for Wolf & Dessauer’s department store downtown in 1940, according to a historical overview of the display by Corey McMaken published in the Journal-Gazette four years ago. Back then, there were three pairs of reindeer; a fourth set was added a year later. After a wartime hiatus, the display returned to be a part of every holiday season through 1958. The next year, the store moved locations and due to various reasons, the display wasn’t a part of the store’s plans. It was put in storage for two decades.

After being found in storage at L.S. Ayres in

the late 1970s, a group of volunteers pushed to restore the display. It survived a move that nearly destroyed it. Local media ran stories and by the Christmas season of 1979 the “first two sets of reindeer had been restored and hung on the side of the Fort Wayne National Bank building (now PNC Bank),” McMaken wrote. Santa and his two sets of reindeer joined them the following year.

From start to finish, the installation, depending on weather, is a three-day process. Two semi-trailers are needed to load the display, which is split into three sections: Santa and his sleigh, with two pairs of reindeer.

With the crane supplied by Doc’s Crane and Rigging Co. of Roanoke, the team carefully mounts Santa and the reindeer, which are illuminated by over 24,000 sockets. It’s a painstaking,

nerve-wracking process. It’s an old display whose operation requires both skill and patience.

“My biggest fear is that we push the button and nothing,” said Finner. “It’s electronics but it’s not failed me ever.”

Last year PNC and the D.I.D. took extra Covid precautions and so Finner pushed the button when the parking lot in front of it was empty of people. But, this year, thousands of Fort Wayne families will be back in person to celebrate the countdown to the big “lights up” moment. “It’s been a challenging year and half, and we’re not completely past the pandemic, but when the lights go up on Santa and his reindeer this year, I know we will all be feeling especially thankful for family, friends and community,” said Corinna Ladd, PNC president of northern Indiana.

About the History centerThe History Center is home to the Allen County-Fort Wayne Historical Society, its museum, and collections. When formed in 1921, the society’s assets were few, consisting of some historical relics that had been preserved by the Mary Penrose Wayne Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Today it maintains a collection of more than 32,000 artifacts, 20,000 photographs and over 1,000 linear feet of archival material representing the history of Fort Wayne and Allen County. The largest of these is the very building in which the society has resided since 1980--the 1893 City Hall building designed by Fort Wayne architects John F. Wing and Marshall S. Mahurin. The History Center also oversees the historic Barr Street Market (adjacent to the building), the oldest public space in Fort Wayne, dating back to 1837, and the 1827 home of Miami Chief Jean Baptiste de Richardville. As many locals may know, the Festival of Trees began as an effort in 1983 by the Embassy board of directors to create a fundraiser to address a multitude of needed repairs for the historic and beloved theater. It was so popular and effective that it has continued for 37 years to be a signature tradition in Fort Wayne that draws families and fans from all over this region. To this day, the festival continues to be the Embassy’s largest annual fundraiser.

This year’s festival runs from Nov. 24 to Dec. 1 with varied schedules each day. Please check the next page or visit fwembassytheatre.org/festival-of-trees for details.

Lobbies of the Embassy Theatre and Indiana Hotel will be

transformed into a wonderland of over 70 decorated trees (YES, 70!) under the theme of The Magic Of The Season. The lights, greenery and bows draped from the balconies will dazzle onlookers alongside the incredible array of artistry and creativity that can be seen in every single tree.

The layout is back to the way patrons remember after last year’s format was adjusted to accommodate health code restrictions. The tour is spread out on the first and second floors. Santa is back in Santa Land at various times throughout the entire festival.

Activities on the Embassy stage include concerts from local choirs, dance group

performances and the Grande Page pipe organ.

Breakfast with Santa is a popular event at the festival, which offers a personalized Santa experience with a catered buffet, performance from the Fort Wayne Youtheatre and private tour of the festival prior to programming. Cost for the breakfast is $30 per person (reservation required, very limited seating). Please note that the Embassy will offer additional Santa experiences in December for those who cannot attend during the festival.

While the Festival of Trees is back to the pre-pandemic experience, the event program will

be accessed digitally once again to create a touchless and more ecological experience. Voting for favorites trees and entries for raffles will also be online.

For those unable to attend the Festival, a video tour will be available as a ticketing option so that viewers can enjoy the festival from the comfort of their home. This is an excellent gift idea or backdrop to watch on TV during holiday celebrations. The virtual ticket will be for sale on Dec. 1 with the tour available for viewing through Jan. 31, 2022.

As we emerge from the pandemic, the Embassy asks the public

to assess health before attending the Festival. Individuals who feel ill should stay home. Masks are highly recommended.

The Embassy is grateful for the support of this year’s primary sponsors: Indiana Michigan Power and AEP Foundation, Steel Dynamics, Fort Wayne Metals, STAR Financial Bank, Chuck & Lisa Surack and Sweetwater, and 3Rivers Federal Credit Union. Media sponsors this year are Fort Wayne Newspapers, WPTA, Adams Radio Group and The Papers.

Follow the Embassy on Facebook or Instagram or call 260.424.5665 with any questions.

Fort Wayne Komets, Lake City Bank, Sweetwater, IU Health Network, Prairie Farms Dairy, Trinity English Lutheran Church, and Downtown Improvement District to sponsor holiday kick-off on Friday, November 19, 2021

The holiday season in Fort Wayne will be ushered in again this year as the official start of this, “most wonderful time of the year,” begins with the 17th Annual “Christmas On Broadway” to take place on Friday, November 19, 2021, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

This year’s celebration will include a parade on Broadway, featuring Santa and Mrs. Claus aboard the popular classic 1976 Pierce Fire Engine led by members of the Turnstone Paralympics Team, cast members from the Fort Wayne Ballet’s performance of the Nutcracker and the Fort Wayne Community Schools “b Instrumental” program. The parade route will begin at Broadway and Creighton and will travel south to the Broadway Plaza. Attendees are asked to line both sides of Broadway along the parade route and then make their way to the Broadway Plaza, where Mr. and Mrs. Claus will be handing out Santa hats and stockings to all of the children in attendance. Turnstone is a local organization that empowers people with disabilities to achieve their highest potential by providing comprehensive services and programs. The “b Instrumental” program is designed to benefit students with access to music during their formative years.

The spectacular 40 foot Colorado Blue Spruce tree will be lit by members of the Turnstone Paralympics team who participated in this year’s games held in Tokyo Japan. Contemporaneously with the tree lighting will be a brilliant fireworks display on the Broadway Plaza, located in the heart of the “07” neighborhood, which is in front of the Shine & Hardin Building.

This year’s tree has been donated by Mr. and Mrs. Keith Baughman of Fort Wayne. The Baughmans planted the tree in their front yard in the mid 1980’s, when it was less than four feet tall. The majestic Blue Spruce has grown to 40 feet tall and will cast a magnificent presence over

the Broadway Plaza. Thanks to the renovations made earlier this year to the fountain on the Broadway Plaza, the computer program which, during the spring, summer and fall controls the multiple colorized patterns within the fountain, will also allow for a variety of lighting displays each evening when the tree is lit.

“From its inception 17 years ago when a mere 150 people gathered to view the lighting to the crowds which now are in the thousands, we are proud to continue the tradition of this family oriented event which marks the official beginning of the Fort Wayne holiday season,” said law partners, Steve Shine and Tom Hardin of Shine & Hardin, LLP, the creators and organizers of this event. As in the past, this year’s tree lighting and fireworks display will be telecast live on ABC21, beginning at 5:00 p.m., when ABC21 telecasts their entire 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. newscasts live from the Broadway Plaza. Merry Ewing, Vice President and General Manager of ABC21 stated that ABC21 is proud to once again bring the colorful enchantment of the holiday season into the living rooms of its viewers. “We want everyone in our community to enjoy this magnificent event and we take great pride in telecasting the tree lighting and fireworks to the thousands of viewers who tune in to our television station each day,” Ewing said.

Each year, Mudrack Tree Services places the tree into its secure position within a large Christmas tree stand constructed by crews assembled by the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. - Indiana/Kentucky Chapter. Electrical service to the tree is supplied by Custom Control and Machine, with the tree itself decorated by A Yard Apart. Other grounds preparation will be undertaken by Vision Scapes. This year, the Christmas tree will be lowered into place on Monday morning, November 15th with live television coverage beginning at 5:30 a.m. on ABC21 and radio coverage on WOWO 1190AM/107.5FM. Throughout the week of November 15th, crews from A Yard Apart will be placing the 40,000 lights upon the tree, as well as readying the plaza for the anticipated thousands of spectators.

Joining the long time corporate sponsors this year will be Indiana’s largest health care network, IU Health, and Federated Media, whose radio stations include WOWO, 97.3 WMEE, 1380 The Fan, Big 92.3, 98.9 The Bear, and K-105. Again this year, the ECHL Kelly Cup winners, the Fort Wayne Komets, will underwrite the costs of the fireworks display and join the other corporate and community sponsors, which include Lake City Bank, Chuck and Lisa Surack/Sweetwater, Prairie Farms Dairy, Trinity English Lutheran Church, and the Downtown Improvement District, all of whom have come together to present this holiday gift to the community.

WOWO (1190AM/107.5FM) will kick off its 74th Annual Penny Pitch on the Pat Miller Show beginning at 3:00 p.m. on the afternoon of the tree lighting (November 19th), broadcasting live from the Broadway Plaza. Penny Pitch is the longest running local charity that benefits area families.

Brian Bauer, President of IU Health Fort Wayne and the owner of the fire engine, expressed delight that both he personally and IU Health could make the holidays brighter for those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays outside of their neighborhood. “We wish to make the holidays as happy as possible for those throughout Northeast Indiana and our participation in Christmas on Broadway helps us reach that goal.”

Gary Erdos, Senior Pastor of Trinity English Lutheran Church commented that being involved with Christmas on Broadway helps brighten the holidays for the community. “Through its long history Trinity English has been a leader in the Fort Wayne community through its music and arts programs, children and youth ministries, and benevolent outreach. Trinity English continues to be a dynamic, lively parish, willing to commit its vast resources to the work of spiritual growth of its people and the greater welfare of the city we call our home,” said Pastor Erdos.

“There is nothing more spectacular than traveling on Broadway each holiday season to

see the wonder and enchantment that the sparkling lights on the Christmas tree bring to the seven neighborhoods which border the Broadway Plaza,” Shine & Hardin stated. The seven neighborhoods are the Creighton-Home, Historic South Wayne, Historic Oakdale, Fairfield, Illsley Place, Williams-Woodland and the West Rudisill.

Michael and Richard Franke, members of the Franke family who own the Fort Wayne Komets, stated, “Christmas on Broadway, like the Fort Wayne Komets, has become a holiday tradition, wherein family, friends and neighbors gather in a neighborhood setting to enjoy the wonderment of Fort Wayne’s largest natural Christmas tree. The Komets are proud to be a part of this event which symbolizes the unity and spirit of our community.” The Fort Wayne Komets are sponsoring the fireworks portion of the tree lighting event, with both the Christmas Tree and the fireworks being lit simultaneously, in a spectacular display of vivid colors illuminating the sky.

The Broadway Plaza is located at the mid-point of the Broadway Corridor, the latter of which has become Fort Wayne’s premier street corridor. The Broadway Corridor claims this title as being home to the largest neighborhood redevelopment project in the City’s history, that being the Electric Works. Shine and Hardin stated, however, that the most important element of the Broadway Corridor are the thousands of families who call it home, choosing to have their residences in this thriving neighborhood.

Shine and Hardin also lauded Chuck and Lisa Surack/Sweetwater for their significant financial contributions to the revived Quimby Village, home to The Clyde and

adjoining Club Room. Their substantial monetary commitment to the south end of the Broadway Corridor has helped make the surrounding neighborhoods vibrant and has breathed new life into the urban community.

Attendees at Christmas on Broadway will be treated to holiday beverages provided by Prairie Farms Dairy, which will include hot chocolate and eggnog. Santa’s reindeer will be present at the tree lighting, as well as the “Polar Express,” a miniature train ride for the youngsters to hop on and to enjoy.

“These wonderful corporate and community sponsors make it possible for families, who may not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy the holiday season, to participate in the holiday celebration right in the heart of their neighborhood,” said Shine and Hardin.

On the following page, children of all ages can color their own rendering of the Christmas tree on Broadway and can win Visa Gift Cards from Lake City Bank, music CD’s from 97.3 WMEE and K-105, and prizes from ABC21. All entries must be received on or before December 16, 2021, and mailed to WPTA-TV, 3401 Butler Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46808. Winners will be announced on Thursday morning, December 23, 2021, on ABC21’s morning news, as well as 97.3 WMEE and K-105.

The top three winners will also have their winning entries shown during Steve Shine’s Holiday Moving Marathon, telecast all day long, Christmas Day, on MyTV Fort Wayne, which will be broadcast on Xfinity 252 and 172, Frontier-FIOS 509, Mediacom 10 and 709, Direct TV 22 and over-the-air on WPTA 21.3.
