  • A Heart for the Arts Sophie is Donna’s daughter in this story. At the beginning, she begins a song, and is interrupted.

I have a dream, a song to sing, to help me cope with anything. If you see the wonder of a fairy tale, you can take the future, even if you fail.

I appreciate these lyrics. Good lyrics are succinct, pointed, and often bring vivid images to the listener. But great lyrics can also have varied meanings depending on whom is applying them. For Sophie, her dream, at the time, is to know her father. Dreams are funny things. They can be bold and firm one day and meaningless the next. Dreams change with our priorities, because as we learn and grow, what we value can change, too.

When I first learned about The Foundation of Arts, I thought I knew theatre and how complex and meaningful it could be. I had gone to school to learn about it, and with my small children in tow, I had a dream to work in it, stretch my wings, and teach people a thing or two about what I knew. Ha! As I write this, I’ve honestly forgotten how many years ago that was, or even when my dream began to change.

Today my dream is larger than stretching my own wings. With the scores of people I’ve gotten to work with over the years, I’m learning how much this little place can deepen our community and grow the landscape of what we all have in common. I look at the experiences people share with each other because this thing called the FOA exists, and I wonder if the hundreds of people whose lives have been touched by the mission here would be as rich or blessed without it. My dream is for more people to fully realize the potential of depth and complexity in the simple mission of the Foundation of Arts: to enrich the lives of our community through the arts.

  • Working with my daughter, Elea, has been a joy that will stay hidden in my heart when I am very old. I remember our years together as she has grown up in this theater, and Donna’s words,

Sleep in our eyes her and me at the breakfast- table, barely awake I let precious time go by, make me push back the tears. How much precious time do we all let go by? I chuckle at myself all those years ago as I wanted to teach people a thing or two. Donna continues with,

Each time I think I’m close to knowing, she keeps on growing, slipping through my fingers all the time.

Many of the great people at the FOA over the years (including even my own children) have been my teachers all this time. Sophie’s song concludes with, “I believe in angels something good in everything I see.” Thank you to all the angels and the immense good at this little place. Dreams certainly are funny things. I hope you have lots of fun tonight. Grab this time, and sing and dance if you can! With a Heart for the Arts, Kristi
