Annual Golf Tournament supports today’s soldiers and tomorrow’s leaders

The men and women of our Armed Forces con-tinue to inspire us with their courage and self-less dedication to mission accomplishment.

There is no question that their training, equipmentand technology are second to none. However, thecornerstone to their success is imbedded in the exer-cise of sound leadership principles by our youngtroop leaders.

The main source of officer procurement forall of our services is our college Reserve OfficerTraining Corps (ROTC) programs. The Cape FearChapter remains committed to insuring that our ser-vices continue to have the best talent our collegeROTC programs can produce. We do this by spon-soring an ROTC scholarships awards program in 26area high schools and four area universities.

Since 1998 we have awarded academicscholarships to the most outstanding junior ROTCcadets accepted for admission to four-year collegeprograms, as well as to senior ROTC cadets enrolledin ROTC commissioning programs in our area uni-versities. So far this year we have awarded fifteenscholarships totaling $15,500 to qualified applicants, bringing our total to $104,500 in awards made sincethe program’s inception.

The major fund raiser to support the ROTCscholarship awards program is our annual golf tour-nament which will be held this year on September19, 2015 at Baywood Golf Course. In addition toencouraging individual participation in the golf tour-nament we are asking chapter members, patriots, businesses and civic organizations to consider spon-soring a golf hole with a donation of $125. We arealso soliciting our supporters to treat a Fort Braggsoldier or Wounded Warrior to play by payinghis/her $70 entry fee.

These tax deductible contributions will helpone of our nation’s best to complete a college degreeprogram, earn a commission in one of our ArmedServices, and serve in the military for a minimum offour years active duty to perhaps as long as a 30 yearcareer; a tremendous investment in our country. Ihope that you will join us as a player, a sponsor, adonor, or a tournament volunteer in making thisyear’s fund raiser a resounding success.

Tip of the Hat… to members of the Cape FearChapter who donated a total of $4,113 tofive high school JROTC programs they sup-port as follows:

·$1,000 to the Navy JROTC unit at CapeFear High School in Fayetteville,N.C. to help the unit defray transpor-tation expenses to their summer campat Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune,NC

·$1,238 to the Air Force JROTC unit atTerry Sanford High School, and $875to the Air Force JROTC unit at E.E.Smith High School both in Fayette-ville, NC to fund attendance of cadetsat the Cadet Officer LeadershipSchool hosted by Fayetteville StateUniversity.

·$500 to Hoke High School in Raeford,NC to fund attendance of ArmyROTC cadets at the Cadet LeadershipChallenge Summer Camp at FortJackson, SC.

·$500 to West Bladen High School Army JROTC at Bladenboro, NC to purchase signs for their physical fit- ness trail constructed by the unit’s cadets on the school campus.

“I don’t golf, but how can I help with the Annual Golf Tournament?”

This is only occasion that we ask our membersto donate their time, talents and treasure insupport of our primary philanthropic endeavor

– our ROTC Scholarship Awards Program. We areasking all chapter members to participate in one wayor another.

Last year only 27% of our members partici-pated in this most important event, an increase of 7%from the previous year. This year our goal is to get atleast 50% member participation. Support can be inform of entering as a player or a team, sponsoring ahole, sponsoring a soldier or wounded warrior to play, donating merchandise or gift certificates/cards suit-able for a prize, helping in some capacity on tourna-ment day, or a combination of the aforementioned.

Hole Sponsorships. A donation of $125 will sponsora hole. You can sponsor a hole in your name, or inmemory of a love one (favored by our auxiliary). Ifyou know of any business, civic or church group, orfriend that would be willing to support a noble pro-gram ask them to sponsor a hole. Sponsorship entitlesthe sponsor to a professionally fabricated sign withthe inscription, “This Hole Sponsored by”, followedby the sponsor’s name and/or other desired designa-tion, prominently displayed on one of the tee boxesduring the tournament.

Active Duty Soldiers Sponsorships: Our program tosponsor our active duty soldiers andwounded warriors to play in our golf tournament asour guests is a popular one. Our soldiershave a great time and our sponsors get a great senseof satisfaction in treating them. Our goal this yearis to sponsor at least 50 active duty soldiers; the costwill be $70 per soldier (the player entry fee). Thebenefits of this program are several, but suffice it tosay that it presents an opportunity to thank our activeduty soldiers for their service by treating them to a

great golf outing; and, it presents them an opportunityto socialize with us.

Donations. A popular feature of our tournament isthe drawing for prizes by players who purchase “Mul-ligan” chances. A ticket is issued for each “Mulli-gan” purchased and these tickets are used to draw forprizes. Prizes consist of golf related merchandise oraccessories, or gift certificates/cards from restaurantsand other commercial enterprises. Donations of suchitems are welcome and encouraged.

To make a donation or to volunteer to help ontournament day please call Tammy Beshlin, Tourna-ment Director at (910) 213-2065, or email her [email protected].

To sponsor a hole or a soldier use the sponsorshipsubmission form on page 7.

To enter as a player or team use the tournament en-try form on page 9.

Leadership Through Sacrificial Service

“Where there is no guidance thepeople fall, but in abundance of

counselors there is victory.”- Proverbs 11:14

It is so important to have good effective leader-ship. It makes all the difference between a winningteam and a losing one. Ultimately God wants all ofus to look to Him to be good leaders who make agood impact as our verse says. One remarkableleader who did that during World War II, WinstonChurchill said, “Success is going from failure tofailure without a loss of enthusiasm.” We must not ever give up in the struggle to leadin the way in which God wants us to lead, and Hewants all of us to lead in various ways. One maylead in service and another in some more prominentway, but all are equally important. As they say intheater, there are no small parts only small actors. I remember Moses and how he had such a strug-gle with leading the people. He never gave up inmaking a difference; and the people did ultimatelycome into the promise land. His willingness to sac-rifice and lead in selfless service was tremendousand noteworthy.

What is God asking you to do? We too bothactive duty and retiree can live those values of goodleadership that help people “not to fall” as our versefrom Proverbs says. The Army values are spelledout in the acronym, LDRSHIP, and stands for Loy-alty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integ-rity, and Personal Courage. All of thesecomponents go into making a leader of character

someone can trust. Military and their families areso important to the future of this great country.

Our verse says that in the multitude of counsel-ors there is victory. However, a call to leadershipis a call to sacrifice. When we lead it is often aboutsuffering and working with the pains and trials ofothers. It may seem like taking one step forwardand getting knocked back two. However, with Godas our ultimate leader we can keep the demons atbay and see the breakthrough for those God hasasked for us to lead. We can make a real differ-ence. When the breakthrough happens that victoryis so sweet and it is all worth the struggle.

Let’s trust God to help us in MOAA to lead theway and to make the difference in the lives of oth-ers we can touch. We can with His help and wewill. Please let me know what prayer concerns youmay have. Remember Peggy and I care.

Businesses, civic groups or individuals can support the ROTC Scholarship Awards Programby sponsoring a hole with a donation of $125.

Moreover, a list of all sponsors is included in thetournament brochure provided to all participants as well as in the October 2015 issue of the“Infogram”, the Chapter’s monthly newsletter; and, the Chapter’s web site at www.cfmoaa.org.

IN MEMORIAM

CW4 (Ret) Robert Bowles, Jr., US Army(Sep 8, 1920 –June 14, 2015)It is with deep regret that we announce that CW4 (Ret) Robert Bowles, one of our regular memberspassed away on June 14, 2015 in Chattanooga, Tennessee while attending one of his WW II reunions.

Bob was one of a very few surviving World War II veterans of our chapter. He took part in the Battleof the Bulge in December 1944, and always considered himself blessed that he survived that and re-turned home in one piece.

Bob was a very active and loyal member of our chapter for many years. Bob attended every chaptermeeting and event without fail, always being the first one to send in his reservations. Bob was a manof extraordinary character, a pleasing personality, and a true patriot. He was well liked and respectedby everyone who knew him and we shall miss him dearly.

Our heartfelt condolences are extended to all of the Bowles family during their bereavement.

MRS. MARTHA DUELL(Died July 24, 2015 at age 90)Auxiliary member Mrs. Martha Duell was married to COL (Ret) Clilfford Duell. According to theFayetteville Observer, Martha grew up in Bruebach, France. She lived under Nazi occupation from1939 until December 1944, and was once hit by a Gestapo member for refusing to say, ''Heil Hitler.''Martha met her husband while working at the post exchange in France. The couple moved to Americain 1948, and she made Fayetteville her home.

Martha and then-City Councilwoman Mildred Evans organized the inaugural International Folk Festi-val, which began celebrating the city's cosmopolitan flavor in 1978, and was one of the founders of theCape Fear Botanical Garden, which was incorporated in 1989. She created the Lafayette Society in1981.

"There was nothing in it for her," Bill Hurley, a former Fayetteville mayor, said Saturday. "She justwanted to see the community be the best. She was just one of those perfect leaders," Mr. Hurley said."A dynamic dame she was."

Martha devoted her life to making her new home better and improving America's understanding ofFrench culture, say friends who knew her. She was notified last month that she will be awarded theFrench Legion of Honor for her life’s work.

Editor’s Note: I called Martha every so often just to say “hello” and check on her. Just lastmonth she renewed her membership in the Chapter for next year and wrote a sizeable check forthe ROTC Scholarship Fund. I wrote her a note thanking her for her donation, but I don’tthink Martha would mind if I shared this with you. Martha and Bob are and will be missed.
