As a wrap up to this presentation, Kentucky State University School of Education is partnering with KDE to implement the SPDG inititative for recruiting and retaining quality teachers. We are focusing our recruitment efforts with our Masters in Special Education program and our retention/professional development efforts with our new Professional Development Center (both available totally online). Dr. Beverly Downing, is the director of these efforts. Rochelle Owsley focuses on recruitment will Saudra Birch focuses on our instructional technology focus. This presentation is to provide an overview of the survey to assess our partnering school districts professional development needs. The results of this survey will help us continue to focus on this initiative. Is a collaborative effort to increase student achievement and post-school success for students with disabilities throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Includes a five-year initiative linked in partnership with numerous agencies throughout the state.

The SPDG grant was awarded for the 2007-2012 school year. It is a five-year initiative the involve the Kentucky Department of Education with several partnering agencies including Kentucky State University. 5SPDGFive Targeted Outcomes :
I. Improve the instructional climate of Kentuckys schoolsthrough a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) model.II. Improve postsecondary outcomes for Kentuckys students with disabilities.III. Build the capacity of Kentuckys schools to increase academic achievement for students with low incidence disabilities.IV. Increase and retain the number of special education teachers (KSU partnership).
V. Improve early childhood transition and over representation in early childhood programs.6
SPDG has five targeted goals and Kentucky State University is the agency responsible for Goal #4. This goal focuses on the recruitment and retention of special education teachers.6SPDGTargeted Outcome IVTeacher Recruitment & Retention
Promote instructional equity so experienced teachers, as well as, pre-service teachers can have a customized program to meet their individual needs and address instructional issues unique to his/her region or teaching assignment.
Objective 1: Increase the number of students in the distance learning Special Education Program at Kentucky State University
Objective 2: Develop an in-depth professional development program to provide highly trained educators competent in both special education and culturally responsive instruction to close achievement gaps.
Objective 3: To develop an in-depth continuing professional development program for current special education teachers and parent training by using distance learning technologies to deliver these training materials available at all times in an effort to close the achievement gap in special education.

More specifically, targeted outcome #4 has three objectives around the goal of recruitment and retention. 7Graduate ProgramMaster of Arts in Special Education (K-12) Learning Behavior Disorders36-45 hours. (33 hrs plus Practicum 3, 6 or 12)TOTALLY ON-LINEAlternative Certification Program (Option 6)
8A little about our Graduate Program. It is a Master of Arts in Special Education (K-12) program in Learning Behavior Disorders. There are 36-45 hours in the program with 33 hours of coursework. The practicum that you qualify for will depend upon your teaching status in the public schools. The program is totally on-line with field clinical experiences throughout the program and culminates with a practicum/student teaching like experience. It is authorized by the Education Professional Standards Board under Option 6 alternative teacher education.8Significant FindingsNo Teaching Experience 49%Two or more Years of Teaching Experience 51%Referrals from Website 41%Word of Mouth 55%Online/Distant Learning Program Factor 76%Plan to Continue Teaching in Same School 42%9A little about our Graduate Program.
