PROGRAM NOTESTHIS IS IT!

“Bring out the jams, bring out the jams, bring out the jams, Brothers & Sisters!” Joe Bowie

“Don’t play what you know, play what you don’t know.” Sun Ra

For the eight Coast seniors in the first set, all the Coast alumni onstage in the second set, and me, tonight will be our final performance with the Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble.

Amiri Baraka said jazz is “the changing same:” change is the only constant. True for jazz, true for Dartmouth. One of my greatest joys has been watching bright, multi-talented Dartmouth students change over the course of their four years here, from the Class of 1976 to the Class of 2017. For every first-year student entering Dartmouth, this is uncharted territory: the future is unpredictable. True for jazz, true for Dartmouth. This academic year has been my 40th year as Director of the Barbary Coast: that’s a nice round number! Tonight’s Senior Feature concert focuses on the talents of seven outstanding Coast seniors plus a gifted senior at Kimball Union Academy. Four of these seven seniors have played with us every term they’ve been on campus—a rare thing these days! All eight seniors are exceptional, and, far as I’m concerned, “this is the way to go out!”

Our vocalist, Tyné Freeman ’17, hails from Columbia, SC. Tyné is a Senior Fellow in Music (one of only five Senior Fellows this year). We’re very fortunate to have had Tyné with us these past four years: she’s a fine vocalist, quiet, commanding presence on stage! Tyné’s feature number tonight is an old standard, My Baby Just Cares for Me. The big band with vocal arrangement is a transcription of a performance by Natalie Cole.

Throughout my time at Dartmouth, I have had many treasured musical experiences...and it all began with this ensemble! Barbary Coast was the first group I auditioned for, and it has been a source of enjoyment and musical evolution. From the beginning, Don has consistently supported and encouraged me. I am grateful to have been able to lend my voice to this ensemble and share the stage with such great talent. Singing with the Coast has deepened my appreciation for collaborative music making, and for jazz. It has played a part in helping me develop my artistry, understand what I have to say, and deliver my message in ways that are effective and authentic.

I can’t imagine the group being led by anyone else, but the foundation Don has set ensures a bright future for Coast. His dedication to the ensemble over the past 40 years is inspiring. I’m grateful to have been in the group under his leadership. It’s hard to believe four years have flown by, and we are both on our way out. The Barbary Coast has provided a space for artistic evolution, along with the growth of meaningful relationships. —Tyné Freeman ’17 vocals

Thank you, Tyné! We love you!

Violinist Emmanuel Hui ’17 is from Hong Kong. Emmanuel is s Senior Fellow in Chemistry (one of five Senior Fellows this year). He joined the ensemble in fall 2015. Once we realized the level of his talent, we knew we had to keep him involved! Emmanuel’s also a Senior Fellow at Dartmouth this year. For his feature, Emmanuel will be conducting and playing on his own composition, Sleepless at Narita, written especially for this performance.

How many big bands have a resident violinist? Here, I’ve googled it for you and to no one’s surprise, it’s not many! Not since the days of

Page 5: presents BARBARY COAST JAZZ ENSEMBLE SENIOR … Season... · BARBARY COAST JAZZ ENSEMBLE ... Emma Howeiler ‘18 piano ... Brubeck’s classic, , as Blue Rondo à la Turk

Ellington, Nance and Venuti has the violin been embraced by jazz. And since the Coast was technically founded in 1919, the Coast is a relic; one that follows the olden attempts of jazzing up the fiddle; one that improves in quality with time as jazz matures and develops as a genre; one that is paradoxically always new, as cycles of students and guest artists come through to bring their own ideas and musicianship to the table. The Coast is a proud legacy to carry, and it is also the healthiest form of catharsis and flow that I’ve ever found on campus.

—Emmanuel Hui ’17 violin

Thank you, Emmanuel! We love you!

Lead alto saxophonist, Erin Huffer ’17, is from Green Bay, WI, and an economics and public policy major. Erin has performed with the Coast every term she’s been on campus, playing soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones and, all the while, developing into a fine lead player and soloist. Her feature number is Dave Brubeck’s classic, Blue Rondo à la Turk, as arranged by Chris Crenshaw for the Lincoln Center Jazz Ensemble.

I can’t really imagine what my time at Dartmouth would have been like without the Barbary Coast. It’s been such a formative part of my college career. As someone who had never played jazz seriously before college, I was floored (and terrified) when Don made me lead saxophone at the beginning of my freshman year. I felt like jazz was this foreign language of which I only knew a few words. Throughout my time in the ensemble, I’ve been able to explore the world of jazz and grow as a musician, thanks in no small part to Don’s patient guidance. His reputation as a bandleader and musician allow him to put together incredible programming for his students. As a result, I’ve been able to perform some of the most modern music in jazz, written

by current creators including Adam Theis, Christine and Ingrid Jensen, Gregorio Uribe, Nicole Mitchell, Peter Apfelbaum, Joe Bowie and more. I’ve also been able to travel—performing and exploring Cuban culture last spring. These experiences have helped me to feel like—after four years of immersion in Don’s world and immeasurable help from my saxophone teachers Michael Zsoldos and Fred Haas—maybe I’m starting to actually be able to speak jazz.

Perhaps more importantly, I’m thankful to have fallen into a group of brilliant students who are infinitely more talented than me, who know way more about jazz than me, and who are so ridiculously fun to spend hours with every week. Even though the group is new and different every year, somehow every year after a few weeks of rehearsal, ridiculous traditions, inside jokes, Shirley Temples, trips to Ramunto’s, Don-related puns, and maybe a broken-down bus/trip to Cuba or two, the Coast becomes a tight-knit circle of friends. To my fellow M.o.t.B.C.—thanks for all the memories and laughs, and above all else, for bringing out the jams. Love you.

—Erin Huffer ’17 alto & soprano saxophones

Thank you, Erin! We love you!

Alto and tenor saxophonist Brendan Barth ’17 is from Hanover, NH, majoring in classical studies. Brendan played varsity soccer all four years, so we didn’t see as much of him as we would have liked, but it’s been great having him join us as often as possible. Nice player, nice guy! Brendan will be featured on alto saxophone, performing Dave Barduhn’s beautiful arrangement of Hoagy Carmichael’s Georgia on My Mind.

I first heard about the Barbary Coast as a young saxophonist growing up in Hanover. It quickly became the music group I looked up to the most.

I went to Coast concerts and was always impressed by the wide variety of music they played and the talent of the group. I was fortunate enough to get a little taste of the Coast by going to Don Glasgo’s “Jazzology” summer camps when I was younger. I particularly remember one session with Barbary Coast guest artist Joe Bowie. Don and Joe had a blast with us: we’d spend each day getting into funk and hip-hop jazz and even practiced scatting here and there. Don opened my eyes to new kinds of music and inspired me to continue to follow my passion for playing the sax. I knew Dartmouth was a wonderful place to continue playing music, and I was thrilled to join the Coast my freshman year.

One of the things I’ve struggled with over the years is balancing my passions for soccer and music. I’m incredibly thankful to Don and to the Coast for giving me the opportunity to do both at Dartmouth. Don allowed me to return to the Coast after not playing during soccer seasons and to become involved as much as possible. I can’t say enough how thankful I am for that! Lastly, when I think of the Barbary Coast, I often think of all of the awesome people who are part of it—such a dedicated group of musicians who simply enjoy playing music and like to have fun. Rehearsals were not lacking in fun, almost all of which Don joined right in with. Even so, we always manage to be prepared for the big concert each term. If there’s one thing I’ll remember about the Barbary Coast: it’s a group of fun people who simply love to make music together.

—Brendan Barth ’17 alto & tenor saxophones

Thank you, Brendan! We love you!

Trumpeter John Martin ’17 hails from Oak Park, IL, and is a mathematics and computer science major. He joined the Coast winter term of his first year and has, in his own unassuming way, evolved into a fine lead player! John will be featured in a combo, performing LCD Soundsystem’s New York, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down.

I think I’m an okay musician, but I’m not that great a trumpet player. My first audition for the Barbary Coast was unsuccessful, and the same thing happened with the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra and the Dartmouth College Wind Ensemble. While I never heard another thing from the other two ensembles, I was lucky enough to get a blitz from Don Glasgo at the end of my freshman winter break asking if I could fill a vacancy in the trumpet section. That winter, it turned out that the trumpet-playing guest artist would be filling that vacancy, but by the spring, I had officially snuck into the band.

The Barbary Coast has been a gateway to experiences I would never have had otherwise. Realistically, I have no business traveling to Cuba, or anywhere else, so that people could hear me play music. The same goes for working closely with our amazingly talented guest artists, particularly Steven Bernstein, Gregorio Uribe, Carlos Henriquez and Craig Harris. This is stuff for the upper echelon of musicians, not a liberal arts undergrad who doesn’t study music and might not even play trumpet after college. But Don has put together a program where even I can learn about different styles of jazz straight from some of their most accomplished performers; where I can learn to improvise not just in the sense of soloing over chord changes, but in starting a song not actually knowing how it will end, and being ready to roll with anything that happens along the way; where I can make music with people who still floor me with their talent; and where, above all, I can make a whole bunch of friends along the way.

So thanks, Don, for everything you’ve either taught me directly or made it possible for me to learn. I won’t forget my time with the Coast, and I wouldn’t trade it for any other college jazz experience. —John Martin ’17 trumpet

Thank you, John! We love you!

Trombonist Barrett Clark ’17 is from Hollis, NH, and majoring in biology and music. Early on, Barrett developed into one of the strongest soloists in the group, and he’s been totally committed to the Coast from the get-go! Barrett’s also been my assistant for the last two years—setting up everything for rehearsals, helping with music, etc.—and he’s done outstanding work there as well! Barrett will be featured conducting and playing on Marshall Gilkes’ beautiful composition, Edenderry.

The Barbary Coast has been a steady creative outlet for my years here at Dartmouth. The opportunity to develop a tight sound in a full array of styles is rarer than one might suppose, and Don’s work with this ensemble shows a dedication to variety. I could not be more grateful to continually have a platform to hone my love of jazz—from the moment I arrived to the moment I’ll leave.

—Barrett Clark ’17 trombone

Thank you, Barrett! We love you!

Bassist Andy Shea ’17 is from Baltimore, MD, majoring in English and studio art. Andy’s been a dedicated member of the Coast since fall 2013! Rock-solid and always there, willing to do whatever’s necessary to make things work, no matter what! It’s fitting that Andy’s senior feature number is O.P., a composition by the great bassist, Charles Mingus, paying tribute to another, Oscar Pettiford.

I think the most important thing is that the Barbary Coast, especially Don Glasgo and my fellow 17’s in the group, have been the most consistently present people in my life throughout my time at Dartmouth—starting all the way back to orientation week. As a freshmen, I had reservations about auditioning for the group, not having had formal training on my instrument. In

the Coast, I found not only a chance to explore jazz in an entirely new way, but also a loving and supportive community, as well as, in Don, a role model and anchoring perspective. I’m eternally grateful Don took me on as “a work in progress” by allowing me to join the Coast, and that he has given so much of his creative time and effort to help us grow as musicians and as people. —Andy Shea’17 string & electric bass

Thank you, Andy! We love you!

Percussionist Gus Jaynes, a senior at Kimball Union Academy, joined us last term, playing drums on our memorable Winter Carnival concert with Joe Bowie, Steven Bernstein, J.T. Lewis and Bahnamous Bowie. Gus did a great job, and we’re delighted he’s with us again this term. His feature number is a jazz “hoedown” in 7/4 by trumpeter/bandleader/composer Don Ellis, Pussywiggle Stomp.

Being a part of the Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble has been one of the greatest musical experiences of my life, and something I didn’t imagine I could be a part of in high school. When Doc Winslow, music director at Kimball Union, let me know that the Coast was looking for a drummer for the winter show (thanks, Doc!), I hardly dared go for the audition, but I’m forever glad I did. When Don Glasgo offered me the chance, I jumped at it. The Barbary Coast has been my first opportunity to play with students who are dedicated, serious musicians and share the goal of great performance, something I’ve been craving for a long time.

What’s more, this experience has opened up a completely new musical world for me. As an 18-year-old, it has been extraordinary to be taught by Don Glasgo and drummer J.T. Lewis and be exposed to such brilliant musicians as Joe Bowie, Steven Bernstein and Bahnamous Bowie.

Having the opportunity to play in this big band has allowed me to grow more as a musician over the past five months than I have in the past five years. As I head into college, I have confidence in myself and my playing ability that I would not have had otherwise, and I know music is going to play a major role in the next stage of my life. Don took a risk on me, one he didn’t have to take, and for that, I’m eternally grateful.

—Gus Jaynes ‘17 (KUA) drums

Thank you, Gus! We love you!

There you have it! The stage is set to celebrate these eight tremendously talented students in the Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble and the Dartmouth (and KUA) Class of 2017: Tyné Freeman, Emmanuel Hui, Erin Huffer, Brendan Barth, John Martin, Barrett Clark, Andy Shea and Gus Jaynes! It’s been an honor and a pleasure to get to know you and work with you all!

***

I started directing the Barbary Coast in 1975/1976, but my mission didn’t become clear to me until I had a conversation with visionary trumpet player Lester Bowie. One of Lester’s many gifts was his ability to cut to the core of any issue in a heartbeat. Before his first rehearsal with the Coast, I was apologizing for the fact there were no music majors in the ensemble, saying, “Just want you to know, Dartmouth isn’t Berklee...” Lester stopped me mid-sentence and said... Here, let Barbary Coast baritone saxophonist Greg Hart tell the story, as he did in his 2010 Valedictory Speech to the Dartmouth community at Graduation:

“Jazz music aims to transcend our assumptions and our expectations. During my four years playing baritone saxophone in the Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble, I’ve often heard our director, Don

Glasgo, explain why Dartmouth needs a jazz band. After all, most (Barbary Coast) band members do not major in music or become professional musicians. Don loves to point out that the ability to improvise is not simply a musical skill, but also a life skill, and as legendary jazz trumpeter Lester Bowie once asked, ‘When you’re being operated on, do you want a doctor who knows how to improvise or not?’ For most of us, our Dartmouth experience has not focused directly on our future careers, but I like to think, that in various ways, Dartmouth has taught us all how to improvise.”

I now realize my purpose on this planet has been to teach Dartmouth students how to improvise in their daily lives. ‘Nuff said. Practicing’s done. Ain’t nothin’ but a party!

With gratitude,

P.S. This remarkable 40-year journey would not have been possible without the blessings of the Directors of the Hopkins Center, from Peter Smith to Marga “¡Cuba si!” Rahmann and Mary Lou Aleskie, and the Presidents of Dartmouth College, from John Kemeny to Philip Hanlon. Thank you! Special thanks to Professor of Music Charles Hamm, who authorized funding this position in the 1970’s through the Music Department, prior to the ensembles being supported by the Hopkins Center. Many thanks to Colleen Jennings-Roggensack, Programming Director at the Hopkins Center, who gave us permission to bring in distinguished guest artists such as Pat Metheny and Dexter Gordon, starting in 1978.

BIG thank you to graphic designer Ashlee Robinson—responsible for our fabulous posters

The Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble is the student jazz ensemble of Dartmouth College. Composed almost entirely of non-music majors, the ensemble specializes in the music of the African-American and Afro-Caribbean jazz traditions.

Don Glasgo director has taught courses in jazz at Dartmouth, Goddard, Hamilton, Lyndon State and Vermont College. He’s written over 100 jazz compositions and arrangements, many premiered

by the Barbary Coast, and currently writes professional arrangements for Joe Bowie’s Defunkt Big Band. Glasgo has performed with the Dartmouth College Gospel Choir, Dartmouth Idol, Oliver Lake Big Band, Joe Bowie’s Defunkt Big Band, Michael Ray & the Cosmic Krewe, The Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen and Phish. This is his 40th year as Director of the Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Apbelbaum, Karl Berger, Steven Bernstein, Jimmy Bosch, Joe Bowie, Lester Bowie, Dave Ellis, Jonathan Gomez, Andy Gonzalez, Slide Hampton, Conrad Herwig, Oliver Lake, Nicole Mitchell, Arturo O’Farrill, Michael Ray, Sam Rivers, William Rodriguez, Jim Seeley, Gregorio Uribe and Marcello Woloski! I’d also like to thank several talented musicians in the area who have helped us out and performed with us from time to time, including Andy Bourke, Steve Ferraris, Michael Geilich, John McKenna, Bob Sparadeo and Jim Tonkavich.

To all of us symbolically “graduating” tonight, I’m reminded of a song Paul McCartney wrote on the eve of the Beatles breaking up, apropos Dartmouth:

The long and winding road That leads to your door Will never disappear

For all of us, thank you Dartmouth!, and thank you, members of tonight’s audience and the thousands who’ve seen the Barbary Coast perform in Spaulding, at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the World’s Fair (Vancouver), on the QE2, in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Newport, RI, Montreal, Havana and Matanzas. It’s been a personal honor to have performed approximately 150 times in Spaulding with the Coast, the Dartmouth College Gospel Choir and Dartmouth Idol. Who knew, when Linda & I arrived in Hanover in 1974, this would be THE stop!

JOHN PRINE AT THE HOP JULY 27

A towering legend of American music, two-time Grammy winner John Prine writes and sings timeless songs reaching straight to the listener’s heart. Songs like Angel from Montgomery, Sam Stone and That’s the Way that the World Goes Round point out life’s absurdities while cherishing its down-and-out people and places, showing how “empathy, ordinary language and minimal detail can produce the weight of an entire novel” (The Guardian). Join this “songwriter’s songwriter” for an intimate, unforgettable evening.

“ Some of the finest songs in the English language.” NPR
