Director’s note:Impro Theatre creates completely improvised plays in the styles of the world’s greatest playwrights, authors, and composers. With Stephen Sondheim, our process involves immersing the ensemble in his works in order to identify common themes, narrative structures, character types, song forms and musical motifs. We mix all of that with our extensive improvisational training – and we set out to collectively create an original, completely spontaneous “Sondheim-esque” musical where every word and every note are being created on the spot.

Unlike when we are improvising Jane Austen, Chekhov, Film Noir, or many of our other styles, Sondheim’s stories are not confined to any one specific world. With settings as varied as London in the 1800’s, New York City in the 70’s, Alaska’s Gold Rush at the turn of the century and subject matter from fairy tales to assassinations…there is no one world that identifies a Sondheim musical. Also unlike our other writers, Sondheim always collaborated with librettists, and they each had their own unique influence on his work. These differences have made it necessary to examine form more intently – not just looking at the stories he tells, but also looking closely at how he tells those stories.

Sondheim is always experimenting with form, stretching the conventions of musical theatre in original ways. In that we share a common goal. Impro Theatre is always striving to progress theatrically. Our work is all about process since we are making it up in front of you and our forms are constantly changing and adapting to whatever story we are creating in the moment.

This is our 4th production of Sondheim UnScripted. With each successive run we have challenged ourselves to dig deeper into his work. It is easy to get distracted by his trademark devices, but underneath the clever rhymes, the complex harmonies, and the ironic perspective - there is a compassionate examination of the complexities and imperfections of our selves and of our world.

Improvising Sondheim is an inspiring challenge that we look forward to every night! It’s a privilege to collaborate with our ensemble of actor/playwrights and our musical director to create a new musical for you - all the while looking deeper into our own humanity through the lens of Sondheim.

How would he tell a story about ___________? Tonight, with your help, we are going to try and find out.

Welcome to the show! For the uninitiated, this unique form of theatre generates a few questions:

Who writes these plays?Everyone that is present on stage. Impro Theatre is an ensemble of actor/playwrights who write theatre as they perform it. Our musical director is improvising all of the music and our stage manager is im-provising the lighting elements.

What does it have to do with Sondheim? The answer is ... everything and nothing. Impro Theatre’s rehearsal process begins with immersing the cast in this specific style. The company reads and researches a great deal in an attempt to decon-struct the style – and then reinvent it in an entirely new way, right in front of your eyes. Over the course of the rehearsal process, we develop our own lexicon that embraces the essence of this particular genre without saying or performing anything that has already been written.

You must prepare a loose outline or know what characters you are going to play for each show?Nope. We do not. It would be even more difficult to plan ahead or use a “set” character. When you are both actor and playwright you can’t afford to plan ahead – you have to stay in the moment. If we plan ahead, we are working against what is actually happening on stage and probably not hearing or noticing that the story just changed be-cause we were too busy thinking. The actor must surrender his or her agenda. One of the challenges of performing this form of theatre is you never know who you will be until you walk out on stage.

What is it like performing a play when you don’t have a script? It is terrifying, inspiring and wonderfully exhilarating. The performers are embracing whole-heartedly the acting tenet to “be in the mo-ment” as they have no other choice.

How do I know you are making it up?We invite you to come back and see another show – it will be com-pletely different from this performance. It is one of the reasons why people come back and see multiple shows!

What do you have coming up?In December, we will be performing Jane Austen UnScripted at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica, and in January 2016, we’re perform-ing Fairytales UnScripted at the Lewis Family Playhouse in Ran-cho Cucamonga.
