WORLD MUSIC: INDIALuminous Ragas: North Indian Classical Music, Part I RecitalSteve Gorn, bansuri flute; and Dibyarka Chatterjee, tabla perform ragas from the Hindustani (North Indian) classical music tradition. This music is passed from generation to generation, from master to disciple, as a living oral tradition. It combines the classicism of traditional repertoire, fixed melodic forms, and precise intonation with improvisation and spontaneous creation.

LECTURE/ RECITAL: THE HISTORY OF “WE SHALL OVERCOME”Professor Victor V. Bobetsky of Hunter College will discuss the research that led to his book, We Shall Overcome: Essays on a Great American Song and provide an overview of the song’s origins and history. He will be joined by several of his students who will perform excerpts from various antecedent hymns and songs whose text and/or music are considered to have influenced the development of “We Shall Overcome” as we know and sing it today.

The Pacheco Festival is committed to developing a world-wide audience via live Internet streaming and other forms of broadcast media. FACULTY RECITAL: PETER VINOGRADE, PIANOBach’s Seven Keyboard ToccatasJ.S. Bach’s seven keyboard toccatas are youthful, improvisatory, virtuosic works, composed after he traveled to hear Dieterich Buxtehude perform – perhaps the greatest organist of all time. The influence of Buxtehude’s extravagant and unrestrained technique can clearly be heard in the works, which present a formidable challenge to the modern-day performer.

WORLD MUSIC: MEXICOGuest ensemble Radio Jarocho plays the rowdy, upbeat, and at times melancholic music of the countryside of Veracruz, Mexico, called son jarocho, and has been mixing it with the sounds of New York’s urban life for over ten years. Having recently joined forces with son jarocho legend Zenen Zeferino, they deliver performances that are passionate, energetic, and true to the roots of the genre.
