L.A.Daiku (L.A.... 第九を歌う会第九を歌う会第九を歌う会第九を歌う会))))

L.A.Daiku is a choral group based in the greater Los Angeles, formed after the “Japan-America friendship concert of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Ode to Joy” sponsored by Japan Business Association at Walt Disney Concert Hall on July 10, 2009. The performance was so successful that some of the singers formed the group, L.A.Daiku to keep practicing and performing.

"Daiku" means "the Ninth" in Japanese and refers to popular performances of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony that are traditionally presented during the

month of December in Japan. The mission of L.A.Daiku is to welcome all people to enjoy singing Beetho-ven's Ninth symphony and other songs from all over the world.L.A.Daiku has performed on more than a doz-en of stages, including Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with Cal Phil at Disney Concert Hall, the Annual Daiku Concert in Naruto, Tokushima, Japan, The New Year’s Daiku Concert at San Gabriel Mission Playhouse with L.A.Daiku Orchestra and other venues in the Los Angeles area.

““““Searching for our roots” Gakuen’s 100 years Anniversary

One hundred years ago, on April 3rd, 1915, “Hollywood Jap-anese Language School”, which became the base of current Hollywood Gakuen, was founded. Around the turn of the 20th century, number of Japanese American children who reached elementary school age was increased as a result of increasing Japanese residents in the U.S. To teach traditional Japanese culture, Japanese peo-ple strongly promoted Japanese language education. As a result, Japanese language schools started to open in several areas. Apr.3,1915 Japanese School Opening Ceremonies In the Hollywood area, there was a court at Hollywood Blvd and Vine St. The court had 7 units, and Japanese youth were living there. The property owner Mr. Carter was known as pro- Japanese American, so it was called Carter’s court. In 1911, Reverend Horikoshi and other volunteers built a YMCA in the court. Around that time, many Japanese seasonal workers settled down to some places to raise families. They needed some supplemental education and preparation to enter public schools. At the Hollywood area in 1915, with the efforts of Reverend Horikoshi and many Japanese who lived around that area opened a Japanese language school in the church of Carter’s court. The grand opening ceremony of the school was held inviting Japanese counselor Mr. Ohyama. The school started with 9 students and one teacher, Ms. Johnson. At the beginning, English and basic manners were taught instead of Japanese. Mrs. Nagata helped them as an interpreter. Soon, Reverend Tsunokai, who is the father of the late Mr. Mark Tsunokai became principal and real Japa-nese education started. This spirit and passion has been handed down through several generations, through many hardships and changes, connected to HJCI and became the current Hollywood Japanese Language School. widely practiced forms of karate in the world today, and one of the most

traditional. Introduced to Japan from Okinawa by Master Gichin Funakoshi,

Shotokan puts heavy focus on kihon (basic techniques), kata (forms), and

kumite (sparring) to develop a range of powerful and dynamic techniques.

Happy news! Mr. Izawa, the assistant instructor of our Dojo and Miss Saeko (one of our students) are going to marry. We are very happy to kick off the new year with such great news. Our slogan of this year is “Back to Basics”. Keeping this phrase in our mind, we will practice this year.

People “Tok Chida, 90 Years Old and Full of Energy”

Tokio Chida has been a member of our community for over 62 yrs. He was born and raised in Santa Paula,

where he and his sister worked hard helping his father’s lemon orchard. He spent his childhood fishing with

his family and shooting rifles and guns hunting for food. Then he went to a college and became a machinist.

When the war broke out, the family had to go to concentration camp. They were moved to some camps be-

fore they finally ended up at Tule Lake camp. After the war, Tok stayed in Los Angeles and worked hard as a

gardener. He did well, then he bought a motor home, and traveled all over America with his family. Several

years later, he became a machinist of a plastic company where he again did very well. A creative man with a

big heart, Tok helped a lot of people. With his brother, he bought a home for the family. With his father, he

made a nice, organic vegetable garden in the back yard which provided lots of fresh vegetables for his

friends and family.

Tok has been helping many people for many years, and he still continues to do so— especially in our com-

munity! Thanks, Tok! (By Masao Yoshida) Facility maintenance HJCI Board members and maintenance volunteers are exploring ways

to improve security by modifying or installing a more secure fence along Juanita Avenue.

Thanks to Jorge and Keiko Sandoval for painting all of the doors of the Social Hall.

Thanks Tok Chida and Masao Yoshida for repairing the base and pipe, which held the metal mailbox. The stand had rusted and was broken at the base.

A big thanks: Kunio Tsuneyoshi for donating much of his time and green thumb maintain-ing the landscape and matsu (pine trees) around the Social Hall. The Sandvals also rou-tinely care for all other gardening and clean up around our property and curbside.
