Soli Deo Gloria

“God has bestowed upon his people the gift of song. God dwells within each human person, in the place where music takes its source. Indeed, God the giver of song is present whenever his people sing his praises.”

Organist Sook Hyun Kim is serving her sixth year as Organist and Director of Music at St. John the Evangelist Church. As a concert organist, Ms. Kim has performed in many major notable venues in the United States, Europe, and Asia such as the Alice Tully Hall in NYC, Jack Singer Concert Hall in Canada, and Emmanuel College in Cambridge, England. She has extensively collaborated with numerous chamber groups as a pianist and accompanist, and has appeared as a soloist with several ensembles and concert series including the Princeton University Organ Concert Series and the Riverside Symphonia. Most recently, she performed as an organist at Saint Matthews’s Cathedral in Washington D.C. and for the Annual Christmas Concert at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in 2013 and 2014, which were broadcast on EWTN. Ms. Kim's previous organ positions include Redeemer Presbyterian Church in NYC, Nassau Presbyterian Church in Princeton, and Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church in Basking Ridge. Ms. Kim holds a B.M., M.M., and diplomas from the University of Colorado in Boulder and the Juilliard School. She is currently studying Sacred Music at the Catholic University of America, concentrating on sacred music and liturgy and conducting. She is the recipient of the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 Magi Carrigan Scholarship, and is the 2014 recipient of the Nancy Bannister Scholarship from the National Association of Pastoral Musicians. Her organ teachers include Jeremy Filsell, John Weaver, and Elizabeth Farr. She studied organ improvisation with Gerre Hancock and conducting with Leo Nestor. Douglas Marshall grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist in the Boston Symphony and his mother a piano and voice teacher. Doug began his career as a boy soprano at age eight when he became treble soloist at Trinity Church, Boston, under the direction of George Faxon. Doug appeared with the Boston Symphony, the Boston Pops, the Boston Opera Company, and made many solo appearances in the Northeast. He sang the part of “Amahl” in Menotti's Christmas opera, “Amahl and the Night Visitors” over five seasons.

Doug began his organ studies at age 12, but soon found himself without an organ teacher. There really was only one person with whom Doug wanted to study anyway: Virgil Fox. Amazingly, that opportunity came when Doug was 17. Over the next ten years, a remarkable teacher-student relationship developed that included appearances with Dr. Fox at Wolf Trap and at the Hammond Castle (where Doug also played daily recitals for visitors), and the opportunity to record and edit several LP records for Dr. Fox. Doug graduated from Zion Bible Institute, where he also taught organ, and attended the Boston Conservatory of Music, where he was given advanced standing in organ to facilitate his ongoing studies with Dr. Fox. Doug also won first prize in the American Guild of Organists National Playing Competition in 1972. Doug has enjoyed a lifelong career as a church organist and recitalist, while also pursuing interests in electronics, sound recording and computers. Most recently, he co-founded Marshall & Ogletree, where he is determined to fulfill his lifelong dream of building the world's finest digital organ.

June 13, 2015 Dear Parishioners,

I am grateful and humbled to play this very special concert on our new Marshall and Ogletree Opus 9 organ. It is with such pleasure and joy that this wonderful instrument is presented in concert tonight in our beautiful newly-renovated church. The previous Rodgers organ had served this parish faithfully for nearly three decades. However, as technology developed and the demands of the parish grew, the organ eventually fell into a state beyond repair. The timing of the renovation coincided with a breakdown of the Rodgers organ, and God blessed us with the gift of a new instrument donated by a member of our own parish family. This magnificent new organ will serve our church for many years, devotedly providing the sacred music to our liturgical celebrations week after week.

I would like to thank Father Robert Kolakowski for his support of the music ministry, and ensuring that we glorify God to the fullest of our ability through our sacred music. Special thanks to our brilliant organ makers, David Ogletree and Doug Marshall, for their genius and talent in making our one-of-a-kind organ for St. John’s. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude and thanks to Louis and Carol Della Penna for their support, prayers, and generous gift, which made the design and installation of this organ possible.

Sincerely yours,

Sook Hyun Kim Organist and Director of Music Saint John the Evangelist Church

Marshall and Ogletree Opus 9

Our new organ is by Marhsall and Ogletree Organ Builders of Needham, Massachusetts, and it is their Opus 9. It is a 3 manual and pedal instrument of 67 digital stops, 48 alternated stops controlling more than 130 voices. It also includes 12 general pistons and 6 divisional pistons per each division, plus standard coupler reversible pistons with 256 memory levels. Each of the M&O flagship organs are unique in design, can be of any size, with one-of-a-kind consoles and stop lists. M&O Opus organs often include custom sounds which can be individually created. Purity of sound is their main concern. This is what Marshall and Ogletree has written about the Opus 9 installation: “St. John the Evangelist in Lambertville, NJ, just completed a spectacular restoration of their church. The Dedication Mass was December 20, at which M&O Opus 9 was heard for the first time. It's rare for every organ installation factor, the preparation, the console, audio, choir placement, the acoustics, etc. all to be ideal, but St. John's excelled in all these areas, making the installation work a joy throughout.”

We are grateful to continue offering the joy of beautiful sacred music to all who enter this church.
