Selection: If only one nomination is received, that person will automatically receive the award. In the event that more than one nomination is submitted, the CBA Ontario board of directors will select the recipient for that year. Once the selection has been made, the person who submitted the nomination will be contacted. The award, a plaque from CBA Ontario and a certificate signed by the band director and the CBA National President, will be presented at the Community Band Weekend in October. CBA(O)’s CBW12 to be Hosted by Silverthorn Symphonic Winds – 12-14 October 2012 Yes – we are only 6 weeks away from the 12th Annual Community Band Weekend, hosted by Silverthorn Symphonic Winds, a 30-40 piece Brass, Woodwind and Percussion ensemble located in Richmond Hill. Everything is falling into place quite nicely and the program is an exciting mix of repertoire from the 20s to the Millennium. Programme highlights include works by Jan van der Roost, Morten Lauridsen, Philip Sparke, as well as showstoppers Themes Like Old Times III and Chicago. It goes without saying that there will also be Canadian Content - Fall Fair by Godfrey Ridout, Message in Scarlet by Louie Calleja, Selection of Robert Farnon and much more. We’re hoping for 100 musicians on stage (35 from SSW), leaving 65 from CBA(O) members. And as of today there are already 31 registrants! So register early and don’t miss out on this wonderful event! The event information and registration forms can be found at our website www.canadianbandassociation.ca/programs.shtml As well, if you have a music stand, please bring it with you for the rehearsal. See you in next month!

Meet the Band – Kitchener Musical Society Band! Summer of 2012 has been busy and fun for KMSB. It seems only a few weeks ago that the Kitchener Musical Society Band reported on a busy spring of festival competitions and community events and was looking forward to taking summer repertoire “on the road”. Now we’re asking; where did the Summer of 2012 go?? By the time you read this, our band members will have been together some 20 times over the past dozen weeks, either rehearsing nearly every Monday, or playing in and around Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding places. Obviously we

enjoy each other’s company! According to some of the more experienced (okay, older…) band members, our current core repertoire of nearly 30 selections is one of the largest and most challenging in recent memory, but also fun and interesting for everyone … audience members are telling us good things and their numbers keep growing. Thanks to the always upbeat and energetic efforts of our Music Director Dave Davidson and three gifted associates – Cathy Baer, Josh Crouch and our own terrific “in-house” composer Matthew Donnelly – we all kept up the pace, especially during our busiest month of July. While anyone who’s tried to grow anything over the past three months is well aware that rain was lacking, this summer has been good for outdoor music. Not a single concert was rained-out or interrupted by weather and only one, at a local retirement home, was “rained in” to the community hall … just in case the looming clouds actually delivered. The big kickoff to our summer-of-fun was the long-awaited June 10 world premiere of “A Grand Journey – Berlin to Kitchener,” commissioned from Ontario composer Jeff Christmas (http://www.nellerartistsmanagement.com/jeff_christmas.html) in honour of our Cityhood Centennial. (In 1912, when the town was declared a city, it was still called Berlin. In 1916 the name was changed to Kitchener).

Thanks to a generous project grant from the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund, we were able to cover the entire cost of Jeff’s score, which will be exclusively in our repertoire for a full year and then becomes available to any concert band in the world that wants to play it. We soon hope to have an informal park concert recording of it available on the KMSB website (www.kmsb.org). That first-ever performance was a scorcher. We were set up on the all-concrete plaza facing Kitchener City Hall in concert black attire under a blazing sun with temperatures soaring into the high 30s. But it was also a very special and proud moment, in which our efforts as Kitchener’s own

band – we’re wholly supported by the city – were celebrated. Since then, we’ve played “A Grand Journey” at nearly every summer concert and are loving it more every time. Thanks Jeff! Another heart-warming and musically rich memory was our annual visit to Goderich on July 8, nearly a year after a devastating tornado (August 21, 2011) ripped through this beautiful town’s core. Fortunately, the excellent Lion’s Harbour Park bandshell escaped damage and we gave our usual best for one of the friendliest and most optimistic audiences anywhere, gathered by our hosts, the Goderich Laketown Band. A lovely reflective piece called “Whisper to Their Souls” by American composer-arranger Samuel Hazo was played as a double dedication to the recovering people of Goderich and to the town of Elliot Lake (native home to one of our own musicians) that had experienced the tragic Algo Mall collapse only days earlier.

Among other original pieces of music that have become band favourites is our own Matt Donnelly’s “Variations on an Irish Folksong,” an innovative and delightful setting of the familiar Minstrel Boy. It’s full of interesting shifts in rhythm and texture that challenge anyone who “knows” the tune … watch out! This summer’s concerts have also marked Matt’s conducting debut and he did us all proud. The comment being heard most about his music is “write more.” On July 24, we lost Ken Cook, a valued KMSB former board member and longtime secretary-treasurer. Ken passed away at Freeport Health Centre at age 85. Even though he’d never played an instrument (but at one time was active in choral singing), he was one of the band’s most passionate supporters and will be greatly missed. We also celebrated an arrival with the birth of little Téo, son of clarinettist Lucie Gentils and saxophonist Thomas Grandin, who joined us two seasons ago shortly after emigrating from France. We wish them well as they add a first child to their talented family. After two Mondays off to collectively catch our breath, the KMSB is back to work again on September 10 with more scores to perfect in time for the upcoming fall and winter. For social networkers, we are now on FaceBook with a new and very active page, thanks to Carolyn Baer, Josh Crouch and some of their keen colleagues (search under Kitchener Musical Society Band … and “Like” us when you get there!). We’re also on Twitter. Weston Silver Band brought out the Silver on Sunday, May 27, 2012, at the Glenn Gould Studio in a concert celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the band. CBW is going East – Hosted by Seaway Winds Get ready for it! Mark your calendars and reserve Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26, 2013 to attend CBA(O) Community Band Weekend, Banding Together, at the plush and newly renovated Aultsville Theatre on the St. Lawrence College Campus in Cornwall, Ontario, hosted by Seaway Winds Concert Band. The weekend will follow the usual schedule of the Community Band Weekends regularly held each fall, but this is the first one to be held in eastern Ontario! The stage at Aultsville Theatre can accommodate 100 instrumentalists, and we’d love to see it full, and the house seating capacity is 658, and we’d love to see it full as well!! And this will be the first time that rehearsals on the Saturday will be at the same location as the concert on the Sunday – on stage at Aultsville Theatre. The Conductor line-up is already set for this weekend and will include: David Druce (Maple Leaf Brass Band); Graham Ingram (Perth Citizens’ Band), Brian Tackaberry (Carleton Place and District Concert Band), Barb Hunter and Raymond Lacroix (Seaway Winds) and Rita Arendz, Graziano Brescacin, and Joe Resendes (CBA(O)). Lets Face It! The Basics of Playing the Saxophone (Part 1 of 3) saxophone (săk'səə-fōn') n. A woodwind instrument with a single-reed mouthpiece and a usually curved conical metal tube, including soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone sizes. [After Sax, surname of 19thcentury Belgian instrument-making family.] (answers.com) Learning how to play the saxophone does not come without its challenges! Although the instrument is among the youngest (roughly only 160 years old) of modern instrument families that exist today, its characteristic sound has found a way into many genres/styles of music and ensembles, including the concert band. This article will focus on proper instrument assembly, and the basics of playing the saxophone. Preparing for a good sound Producing a good tone on the saxophone is critical, and often overlooked. Due to the free-blowing nature of the instrument, a sound can be relatively ‘easy’ to produce and is, in part, the reason why so many students are attracted to the saxophone. In reality, the ‘ease’ of honking out a note is perhaps the saxophones greatest weakness. To achieve a warm, full-bodied sound with control, requires work, some dedication, and the correct setup. Consider these basics before you begin playing a note!

Mouthpieces, Reeds, Ligatures and Suggested Setups Having a good mouthpiece, reed and ligature combination is very important to developing good tone quality. The ‘stock’ mouthpieces that usually come with your saxophone are not always the best option,even with a good instrument. It is recommended that you find a good setup that both produces a qualitytone with your saxophone, and one that facilitates your abilities. When visiting your local music store, investigate which mouthpiece/reed/ligature brands they carry, and test a number of them out using different combinations before making a purchase. As mouthpiece setups react differently to different instruments, be sure to bring your saxophone along during the testing phase. There are many relatively affordable mouthpiece and ligature combinations available. I’ve often recommend the Selmer C* mouthpieces (pronounced ‘star’) using Vandoren or Hemke Reeds, and either a standard Selmer metal, or the Rovner leather ligatures. Other setups are specific to the style of music you play, and can include any combination of the following brands: Other Mouthpiece: Ligature Options: Reeds: Selmer D* (larger opening than C*) Selmer Metal Ligature Hemke Selmer Soloist Rovner (light or dark) Légère Meyer 5 medium Selmer Optimum Rico (Royal, La Voz, Jazz) Ottolink Rubber/Metal (Jazz) Setting up your Reed, Mouthpiece, and Ligature Before playing your instrument, it’s essential that you assemble your saxophone properly in order to produce a good tone, and avoid any playing restrictions caused by poor assembly. First, lets take a look at how to properly setup the saxophone mouthpiece.

= Figure 1. (http://www.saxophone-players-guide.com/saxophone-mouthpiece.html)

Mouthpiece Setup: Things you will need: Cork grease, mouthpiece, a reed, ligature, and the saxophone neck. Note that assembling your mouthpiece should be done with the neck detached from the saxophone.

1. Spread cork grease evenly around the cork of your neck. This will ensure that your mouthpiece slides into the neck properly, without getting stuck or even tearing the cork;

2. Place the mouthpiece onto the neck of the saxophone by slowly twisting and sliding the mouthpiece to about ¾ of the way. Be sure to keep the mouthpiece table and opening faced down. (See Figure 2 for descriptions);

3. Soak both ends of the reed in your mouth for roughly 1 min. The reed needs to be moist in order to produce a good seal onto the mouthpiece;

4. Place the flat side of the reed on the mouthpiece while properly adjusting the reed so that all sides, tip, and bottom are centered on the mouthpiece table. Be sure to slide the tip of the reed upwards towards the edge of the mouthpiece. You should be able to see a sliver of ‘black’ appear at the point where the tip of the reed meets the tip of the mouthpiece. (See Figure 1.);

5. Carefully slide the ligature over the mouthpiece and reed so that it is centered, and positioned under the “cut” of your reed face. Typically, most reed bark is cut straight across, or in a ‘U’ shape. (See Figure 1);

6. Test the seal! You can do this by closing off the mouthpiece or neck with the palm of your hand (don’t let go!), while sucking the air out of the space within the mouthpiece. By removing your mouth, the reed/mouthpiece should hiss and produce a ‘pop’ sound ensuring that you have a good seal. If this doesn’t occur, readjust the reed and try again; and

7. Once your setup is complete, attach the neck to the saxophone and gently tighten the neck screw to ensure the neck does not move or rotate while playing.
