Newly Inducted Rotarian Jenny Foster seeks support for:

Care For Cambodian’s

Care For Cambodian’s

At Rotary today Jenny Foster & Jane Carbone our latest members, are involved in a small not-for-profit organization that has the business name of "Care for Cambodians". Below is the logo.

This organization Jenny & Jane started last year, together with three others, after a couple of trips to Cambodia to visit a lady there, Carolyn English. Carolyn lives in Essendon for 6 months of the year & lives in Battambang, Cambodia for the other half working as a Volunteer Nurse. She’s been going to Cambodia as a volunteer for eight years now and such wonderful work she is doing for the people there.

Carolyn will return to Battambang in June for six months and a group of 12 of us will travel there ourselves in July. Carolyn works for the "Worldmate Emergency Hospital" & the Handa Medical Centre as the Nurse Trainer.

Link: http://www.thehandafoundation.org/index.html

The Handa Foundation funds the building, staff wages etc but this funding does not reach very far to the provision of Medical equipment. The Hospital is the largest trauma hospital outside Phnom Penh & is still the main land-mine hospital which it was originally set-up for. They are desperate need of so much especially wheelchairs, crutches, beds, medical instruments, bandages etc.

After visiting the hospital twice in 2013, we realized that we could help so much in supplying them medical equipment that is available for donation in Australia. This has led us to involve Rotary DIK (Donations In Kind) with the plan of shipping a container to them in May. Essendon Rotary is committed to a further workshop Thu Apr 17th(Easter Thursday!), 10am @ Shed 40, 400 Somerville Road, West Footscray. You can confirm your attendance through Boris’s “MeetUp” facility.

This Thu Apr 3rd, from 9:00am, we will be at DIK sorting through boxes of medical donations that need to packed ready for shipping. Essendon Rotarians interested in assisting Jenny, are encouraged to please do so and would be much appreciated please. Further assistance will be required in May when we aim to ship if anyone may be available then. Date: TBA.

Below are four photos that Jenny took when there in December last.

1. Staff sorting through medical gear that DIK donated & we hand-carried there in Dec. They were so appreciated & so excited when we delivered all this to them. Imagine when they get a Container full!!

The District Conference Report ‐ Jupiters Gold Coast Mar 2014

How difficult is it to organize a District conference.

If one of our members becomes DG (District Governor - for newer members), this is what we would have to do.

Let’s go through the nuts and bolts of this exercise.

Firstly, find a venue that has:

Good accommodation at reasonable prices in a location that has nearby shops restaurants etc. It must have sufficient, comfortable seating capacity, air conditioned, good food, good service and a top quality PA system.

Ok, say yes, we have such a place, inside or outside our state, whichever is preferable, then next would be the program.

Essential would be, several very good speakers who should appeal to both genders, throw in some good humour and an entertaining MC, along with a spread of Rotary workshops and info sessions.

Have a club or cluster dinner and finish the show with a fun Gala Dinner.

To me, that was this year’s conference at Jupiters.

Well done to all involved.

Odd WW II facts

1. The first German serviceman killed in WW II was killed by the Japanese ( China , 1937). The first American serviceman killed was killed by the Russians Finland 1940). The highest ranking American killed was Lt Gen Lesley McNair, killed by the US Army Air Corps.

2. The youngest US serviceman was 12 year old Calvin Graham, USN. He was wounded and given a Dishonorable Discharge for lying about his age. His benefits were later restored by act of Congress.

3. At the time of Pearl Harbor, the top US Navy command was called CINCUS (pronounced 'sink us').

The shoulder patch of the US Army's 45th Infantry division was the swastika. Hitler's private train was named 'Amerika.' All three were soon changed for PR purposes.

Greetings from Former Essendon Exchange Student (1970-71 Dear Members of the Rotary Club Essendon: Please permit me to extend my greetings and best wishes to all. In 1970-71, the Essendon Club hosted me as a Rotary International Exchange Student to Essendon High School. The sponsoring USA Rotary Club was the North Hunterdon Rotary Club from Clinton, New Jersey, USA. It was a 364-day exchange program. Upon return to USA, I graduated Princeton University and worked 27-years at the NJ Department of Transportation (think highways/trains/airplanes, not prisons!) specializing in both aviation and executive policy/legislation. For the past 7-years I have worked for an engineering/architecture/planning firm called L.R. Kimball, specializing in airport design and economics. I am a licensed commercial pilot & flight instructor; hobbies include ham radio, beekeeping, kayaking, fencing (swords!) and hunting. My wife of 36-years is Gretchen who is a legal secretary church organist; daughter Amelia is 26 and a Lt. in the US Army, engaged to marry Dan, a farmer; son Mathew is 25 and a plumber, engaged to marry Kirsten, a university pre-med student. A long association with Rotary has continued. I became a Charter Member of the North Hunterdon Regional High School Interact Club, am currently a member of the Flemington, NJ, USA, Rotary Club, and as working hours/locations demanded have been a past member of the Trenton, NJ, and Beverly, NJ Rotary Clubs; am a Beverly Club Past President. Essendon and the Rotary Exchange Student program was a life-changing experience for me, and for which I will forever be grateful. I recently posted 60 or so Essendon High School related photographs from 1970-71 on the "Essendon High School" Facebook page. You may find them to be a combination of sentimental, nostalgic and sometimes humorous. I extend warmest regards to all, Tom Thatcher. THOMAS P. Boris’ Quote of The Week:

Thomas Edison’s, most memorable invention was the light bulb, which took him 1,000 tries before he developed a successful prototype. “How did it feel to fail 1,000 times.” Edison responded. ”The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”

Co owner of The Valley Cellardoor wine bar & bottle shop, Mark Pendreich attended Relay For Life function on Friday at no charge to the club and offered the wines at a great price to the Club. About The Valley Cellardoor

It was while lying on a Thai beach that Tony Pendreich (Co-Owner of The Valley Cellardoor) first had the idea to open a bar. That idea eventually turned into the Mordy Cellar Door, in Mordialloc, a joint venture that became one of Melbourne’s first bottleshops to invite customers to bring their own food, pull up a chair and enjoy the beers and wines on offer in store.

Seven years on, he’s bringing the successful formula to Moonee Ponds, where, with wife Rose and his sommelier brother Mark, they are combining their expertise in the wine industry with a passion for boutique producers at the Valley Cellar Door. Customers can treat it as a bottleshop specialising in local wines and Australian craft beers or pay a corkage fee to enjoy their purchases on site, where there’s a choice of tables and chairs out front, cosy indoor seating or a landscaped courtyard at the rear.

Valley also features four draught taps that are constantly rotating through different beers and offers growlers that allow customers to take draught beer home. The Valley Cellar Door offer nibbles, including cheese and cold meat platters, but encourage people to bring whatever takes their fancy. They’ve even installed a BBQ out back that’s proving popular with regulars.

Valley holds regular tastings and wine flight evenings and has plans to host events where guests can sample beer and wine in the company of winemakers and brewers. With the highly regarded Mike Press Wines as the house wine, it’s one of a growing number of BYO food bottleshops and a great little spot to find craft beer in a part of the city where choice is limited”

Port n Pie Night:

The Valley Cellardoor also recently supported the Club with our Port & Pie Night at Queens Park which by all reports was another Roaring Success. Thanks Tony Pendreich.
