Bridging the Gap

Page 2: President Janice Hall Dean - kappanationalsilhouettes.org · committees will be established in the future, and we will need Silhouettes to utilize their expertise in many areas. I

Greetings National Silhouettes,

Our theme is: INDIVIDUALLY unique – TOGETHER complete – BRIDGING THE GAP. Always remember - we are indi-

vidually unique, and together, we are complete. The National Silhouettes of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated

have successfully provided 70-plus years of stellar support and service. As we move forward, we will continue to

bridge the gap to strengthen our organization, enhance our communities, and fortify our partnership with our Kappa

men.

During the next four years, one of our primary goals is to strengthen our organization. Transparency is, and will con-

tinue to be, a top priority. Together, we will continue to implement new technology processes and procedures to im-

prove our national structure. In addition, new committees have been established to assist the National Silhouettes

conduct business efficiently and effectively. The National Finance and Audit Committee is charged with ensuring that

we are financially responsible with your money. The National Policies and Procedures Committee is charged with cre-

ating and updating pertinent policies and procedures to ensure operational success. The National Fundraising Com-

mittee was been established to raise funds for our organization. This committee will also solicit donations and obtain

sponsors to support the initiatives and other endeavors of our organization.

Membership is the foundation of the National Silhouettes organization. To further strengthen our national organiza-

tion, our local chapters are being encouraged to REACTIVATE and ENGAGE Silhouettes. Our membership efforts will

extend to RECRUITMENT of new chapters across the country. Silhouettes, we need you to get excited about this

membership initiative as we implement different events in 2018.

Our National Silhouettes organization will continue to be on the frontlines of societal issues to enhance our commu-

nities. In the United States, on average 20 people are physically abused by intimate partners every minute. One in

every three women is physically abused by a partner. During the next four years, we will raise awareness, volunteer,

support legislation, and partner to “Stop Domestic Violence.” First Lady Geraldine Battles has been appointed our

National Silhouettes Spokesperson and Dr. Stacy Scott has accepted the appointment as our National Silhouettes Edu-

cator for both programs. National Silhouettes First Vice President Andria S. Daniels has accepted the role of Program

Chair for the “Stop Domestic Violence” initiative and National Silhouettes Second Vice President Shirley Pinckney has

accepted the role of Program Chair for the “Safe to Sleep Campaign.”

The National Silhouettes of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated is a brand that fortifies the strong relationship

and lifelong partnership we have with our Kappa men. Therefore, the National Marketing Committee has been estab-

lished to assist national committees with promotion of our organization and its planned activities. Additionally, the

National Vendors Committee has been established to vet and establish vending relationships with companies to sell

Silhouettes paraphernalia and general items at the National Silhouettes meetings, events, and online. Additional

committees will be established in the future, and we will need Silhouettes to utilize their expertise in many areas.

I excitedly look forward to having the opportunity to continue working together with you!

Love,

Janice Hall Dean

COLLECTIVE EFFORTS

This edition of our quarterly

newsletter is both lively and

motivating as it highlights our

accounts of fun with each other

as well as our collective efforts

of work in the spirit of the

National Silhouettes of Kappa

Alpha Psi. Through our collec-

tive efforts we have served not

only our communities, but also

one another in ways that we felt

might make a difference in

those lives. These, acts of self-

lessness were repeated over

and over again throughout our

nation as we, who are sisters

by way of a bond between

brothers, worked collectively to

give more.

Collective efforts are all about

constant cooperation, and col-

laboration within our chapters,

our provinces and the national

board. Collective efforts, such

as the ones written about here

have positioned us to move

even further up the ladder to-

ward greater opportunities of

service and reward.

So in this issue, I ask that you

focus on the collective efforts of

all the chapters shown. Through

them we are able to witness,

first-hand, how the contagious-

ness of collective efforts has

made and will continue to make

a difference in local communi-

ties. Then, let us pray that

what we see continues to

strengthen the bond that in-

spires us to continue doing the

work that makes good things

happen for each other.

Silhouettes Earma Lane, Veda White, Kenya Day-Edwards, & Clydell Clark (photographed clockwise)

In the words of Kool & The Gang Lyrics, Oh, yes, it’s Ladies’ Night, And the feeling’s right. Oh, yes, it’s Ladies’

Night, Oh what a night. On Friday, November 10, 2017 The Murfreesboro Silhouettes (‘Boro Sils) participated in our very

first “Ladies’ Night Out” at The Pottery Place where we relieved the stressors of the week by painting a ceramic of our

choice. During this social outing, we were able to catch up and become better acquainted with one another as Women &

Wives. Immediately following painting, we had dinner at Burger Republic a new restaurant in our city of Murfreesboro,

which is among the 15th fastest-growing large cities in the United States.

In addition, on September 16, 2017, we had Round-Up 2017 - Membership Drive at Arrington Vineyards in Ar-

rington, TN to attract new members to the ‘Boro Sils. During this Holiday Season, we have decided to adopt an Angel

from The Salvation Army Angel Tree for Christmas to ensure a child in need will have presents. Lastly, we will be volun-

teering at or local Domestic Violence Shelter in the Spring of 2018. The Murfreesboro Silhouettes of Kappa Alpha Psi

Fraternity, Inc. Silhouette Chapter members consists of the following women: Clydell Clark, Earma Lane, Ann Smith,

Chanta Wilder, Veda White and Kenya Day-Edwards is the Chapter President.

The Jacksonville (FL) Silhouettes have created an original service project in 2017 which benefits the middle and high school students attending the Gravely James Campus of the Florida Military Academy in Jackson-ville. The cornerstone of the project is a program affectionately known as “Girl Magic” – which focuses on the development and shaping of the social, interpersonal and personal skills of the female students. The program requires a personal commitment by each participating student to attend monthly sessions, to actively participate during the workshops, and to treat their peers and the visiting Silhouettes with proper respect. The November meeting with the girls was an energetic and informational “Getting to Know You” session, which included a Name Game ice breaker to encourage all participants to introduce themselves in a creative way, distribution of the 2017-2018 Events Calendar and special gift cards, lively conversation and refreshments. Topics for future monthly meetings will include Etiquette/Manners, Self Esteem, Respecting Yourself and Others, and Healthy Body & Nutrition. Silhouette Barbara Darby is the Chairperson of this unique and special project. In addition to this awesome program for the young ladies at the academy, the Jacksonville Silhouettes are also providing seasonal decorations for the school bulletin board as well as periodic greeting cards and holi-day luncheons for the cadets and staff.

With the spirit of “A Call to Action”, one of the Charlotte Chapter’s goals has been to increase chapter size and participation. On

August 10, 2017, we held a meet and greet at locally owned Plaza Midwood Smokehouse. To effectively reach and invite new

ladies, we used social media thru the Kappa’s GroupMe and Chat channels. We were pleased to have 11 new ladies that have

not attended a meeting before. We have increased membership participation and paid membership dues. In December, we are

planning Kappa Klaus for the Charlotte area; March, assisting with the Kappa Beautillion; and June, the Healthy Achievement 5k

This will be an opportunity to ad-dress issues faced by young women post Harvey. We expect women from shelters, and we have reached out to the Houston, Aldine, Sheldon Independent School District Nurses, TSU, UHD and others to invite stu-dents. We met with TSU staffers yester-day and found that the date was too close to get female students to attend the conference. We will be able to connect with students in need of these services and explore ways to get these ser-vices to them. The conference will be attended by the 100 target families being serviced through the Bread Of Life. if at all possi-ble, please try to attend the con-ference. We are making a difference help-ing our community to recover from Harvey.

PLEASE TAKE THE FLYER TO OUR CHURCHES and give to your family and friends. Addition-ally, send it to the people on your contact list. As women we fill multiple roles, and often taking care of our personal needs can not take priority, thus these ser-vices focus on female needs.

Under the new administration, we will continue to serve the six Community Services Projects (CSP) already in place. This year, at the request of the Eastern Province Silhouettes (EPS) Coordinator, each EPS Chapter presented a Day of Service in their local community. Our Day of Service Project was in support of the SIDS Initiative; a partnership with our beloved Kappa men! We spent an afternoon packaging nine (9) “Safe Baby” baskets for pregnant teens who reside at a local homeless center. We filled the baskets with baby shower gift items, safe sleep items, and a Safe Sleep Video with brochures provided by NIH. The Community Services Project Chair, Silhouette Faye Cobb and Co-Chair, Silhouette Benita Swindell delivered the baskets to the Center. Three Safe Sleep Videos and brochures were

left with the Center.

Throughout the Silhouette year, we will continue to support our CSP, promote goodwill in our communities and pro-vide stellar support to the National Silhouettes Auxiliary under the auspices of the Bowie/Mitchellville (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. were eight Silhouettes, and three Kappa brothers.

There were wonderful responses after the seminar concerning the presentation. Many of the attendees said

enjoy the company of our Kappa Men, Silhouettes, family & friends but we ate

great-tasting food prepared by some classy Silhouettes. The o le’ adage, “the way

the conclusion of the picnic, the 13th Polemarch & his wife, Carl and Leona Brown,

The Columbia, South Carolina Silhouettes, led by the chapter president, Silhouette Elaine Melvin, toured the local

Ronald McDonald House on October 16, 2017. The Ronald McDonald House in=s an international organization

which provides a home away for families and children being treated at local hospitals.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities in Columbia, SC serves families through two cornerstone programs, the

Ronald McDonald House and the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Richland Memorial Hospital. The Silhouettes

were welcomed by the dedicated staff and Alphie, the beautiful RMH dog. They toured the new 16,000 square-foot,

sixteen-bedroom, state of the art facility. Recognizing that the RMHC depends on the kindness of volunteers and

the generosity of donors, they learned of volunteer opportunities open to them and they donated to the charity.

The Silhouettes intend to make the Ronald McDonald House Charities a priority in the Chapter’s community efforts.

SUGGESTED READING: (FOR THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN A VICTIM OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE)

Many women who free themselves from violent domestic situations experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) long after they achieve physical and emotional safety. A ringing telephone or a crowded city street threatens a potential encounter with their abus-er. People they care for seem far away, and things they used to enjoy offer neither pleasure nor relief. Their long, sleepless nights drag on. If you’ve freed yourself from an abusive rela-tionship but still suffer from its effects, this pro-gram of trauma recovery techniques can help you take back your peace of mind. Based on a clinically proven set of techniques called cogni-tive trauma therapy (CTT), the exercises in this workbook will help you address feelings of guilt, anger, depression, anxiety, and stress. You'll learn how to break down the negative thoughts that might be cycling in your mind and how to replace them with positive, constructive affirmations. Later in the program, you'll be guided through controlled exposure to abuse reminders, which will enable you to face the fears you might otherwise spend a lifetime avoiding. The program begins and ends with techniques for becoming your own best advocate—an in-formed, confident person with all the strength you need to create the secure, fulfilling life you deserve.

Recognize the effects of trauma on your life Let go of anger, stress, shame, and guilt Change core beliefs that can lead to involvement in abusive relationships

Confront and overcome your fears Dispel feelings of helplessness

Avoid future involvement with potential abusers

Philadelphia Kappa Silhouettes

Founded October 3, 1923

The eldest member of the Philadelphia Kappa Silhouettes, Bergner

Searles, celebrated her 100th birthday on December 5, 2017. This

wonderful woman is still full of vigor, humor, and wisdom! Dur-

ing a phone interview on November 18, 2017, she was asked how

she felt about her 100th birthday and her birthday party. Her re-

sponse was, “Well, I’m a little excited in a way… and I hope eve-

ryone has a good time.”

As she continued to talk, it was so hard to believe her age because

she speaks as if she were much, much younger! Silhouette Bergner

was born in Philadelphia, PA on December 5, 1917. She attended

Reynolds Elementary School, Girls High, and Gratz High School.

She later matriculated at West Chester State College, where she

earned her B.S. Degree in Math and English.

She married Kappaman John Searles (Chapter Invis ible) on Au-

gust 5, 1943, and joined the Philadelphia Kappa Silhouettes short-

ly thereafter. He was a 50-year member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fra-

ternity, Inc. To their union was born one daughter, Judith “Judy”

Searles. She is also the proud grandmother of 3, and the great-

grandmother of 6.

After teaching math for one year in the Philadelphia School District, Silhouette Bergner dec ided to stay home in or-

der to take care of Judy. When Judy turned 16 years old, Silhouette Bergner returned to the Philadelphia School Dis-

trict as a Social Worker, and served in this capacity for 20 years.

Later, in the phone interview, she was asked if she could name the activity that she has enjoyed the most throughout

her membership in the Philadelphia Kappa Silhouettes. She stated with a chuckle, “I don’t know. I enjoyed the meet-

ings ‘cause we, you know, we discussed other things other than the bus iness. We had a little food afterwards.” She

further commented on how she did not feel that she would enjoy being a member of the chapter, but it was so much

more than she initially anticipated. “I didn’t think I would ‘cause I didn’t think I would like women’s groups. I

thought they would be catty and so forth. But in order to live with my husband, I had to be a Silhouette!” With a

hearty laugh she stated, “He would have bugged me to death!” Silhouette Bergner has served as Corresponding Sec-

retary and served on various committees. She served on the first Philadelphia Kappa Silhouettes Luncheon Commit-

tee (1950), and continued for 5 consecutive years! She also spoke about the first time she hosted a chapter meeting.

It was in 1953. Chapter members kept hounding her to do so, and she finally gave in. Her next door neighbor, who

was an undertaker, gave her chairs to use during the meeting because she didn’t have any because of her recent

move, a month prior. At the end of the interview, she was asked if there was any advice that she would like to give to

young or inactive Silhouettes. “Well, all I can say is I love those Silhouettes!” She went on to say, “I advise the

young wives to join and participate in the activities. They will enjoy themselves. Silhouettes were a different kind of

person, lady-like and caring.” When asked if she felt that her overall experience as a member of the Philadelphia

Kappa Silhouettes had been pos itive, she stated, “Oh yes, that’s why I’m still there!”

Silhouette Bergner is a member of St. Luke Episcopal Church, ECW (Episcopal Church Women), and Young at

Heart (Senior Citizens Group).

Did You Know

Kappa Silhouette Historical Tidbits

Before the Silhouettes were officially formed, a select group of Kappas asked their wives to act as hostesses and plan activities for visiting wives and children. Thus, an organized permanent group, calling themselves “Kappa Wives” or Kappa Alpha Psi Silhouettes” were formed.

The formal organization of Kappa Silhouettes became official in August,

1947 at the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Conclave in Los Angeles, Cal-ifornia.

Our very 1st nationally elected President was Silhouette Dr. Evelyn Payne

of Brooklyn, New York.

The National Silhouettes’ Hymn was adopted at the 53rd Grand Chapter

meeting of Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc., in Boston, Massachusetts in 1965.

In 1980, the Board of Directors of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., grant-

ed a seat on the Board of the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation to the Nation-

al Silhouette President.
