We are in need of Wagon Masters for the Club rallies. We have 4 rallies listed on our website with 38 couples signed up but no Wagon Masters. These rallies are not going to happen unless we get Wagon Master volunteers. At the April Club meeting, Mike Schwab gave a Power Point presentation on being a rally Wagon Master. If you were not at the meeting or want to view the Power Point again, the Slides can be viewed from the website. Click on the red "FORMS" button. Then click on the PDF link next to the Wagon Master 101 item listed under Wagon Master Forms. Also, in the same location on the "FORMS" web page is another pdf document that is a detailed narrative of Wagon Master Duties. This document is not new to the web site. The Club had one rally in May. From May 4-13, Penny and Mike Betcher assisted by Maryl and Craig Weady led a rally to three beau-tiful National Parks: Grand Canyon, Zion and Lake Powell. All the parks were clean and the staff was exceptionally easy to work with.

We had a full dinner prepared by the Wagon Master and Assistant Wagon Master one of the nights at each stop. We had a Cinco de Mayo party while at the Grand Canyon and a chilly campfire.

Colglazer‟s finally got their new rig out for its first rally with only a few, easily fixable problems. Holmes left us after the Grand Canyon to attend to family business but then the Lee‟s joined in the fun. The Marotti‟s added a “fun” ride from the Grand Canyon to Flagstaff in an ambulance. Nothing serious…just an altitude adjustment made by Tony. We moved from the Grand Canyon to Zion National Park where the Navratils, Akers and Joys joined us. What a beautiful site! Everyone on the rally hiked and admired the scenery. No campfires at Zion, but the park had a great community room that we were able to use for dinners and games. We then moved to Wahweap Park at Lake Powell. While at Wahweap, some of the rally-ers spent the day on the Colorado River taking the all day long river ride while others took the shorter half day ride. Everyone agreed that Lake Powell is a beautiful place to camp. There were beautiful campfires at Wahweap where we exchanged many funny stories. Our Fire Master, Mike Holloway, took good care of us in the campfire department. Our rally finale dinner, at the Rainbow Room, was made memorable by the fabulous view of Lake Powell from the restaurant. We had a great rally!!

Lowlights: Sorry that Tony Marotti left the group due to a health issue.

Notable Events/Activities: Hiking, river rafting, eating…generally a great time. Thanks Penny, Mike, Maryl and Craig!

WELCOME BACK RALLY

Leaf Verde RV Park, Buckeye

October 19th - 21st, 2017

Wagon Masters: Bill and Sharon Navratil Let's get together for a rally from October 19-21, 2017 as we return from our summer excursions. Leaf Verde RV Park in Buckeye is only a short 30 minute drive from Sun City Grand. This is a highly rated, big rig friendly park. There is a large gathering room for games, pot luck suppers or a catered dinner. There are also many fine restaurants nearby. There are a total of 29 spots available and there are still openings. Call the resort at 623-386-3132 by October 5, 2017 to pay your deposit. The remaining bal-ance will be paid at check in.

CHULA VISTA, SAN DIEGO RALLY

Chula Vista RV Resort

November 8th – 14th, 2017

Wagon Masters: Mike and Marty Holloway

Assistant Wagon Masters:

Chris and Jerry Colglazier

The estimated cost of $353 includes the RV site and $10 trip fee. The trip fee will be used for the Welcome Dinner, put on by your Wagon Masters, when we arrive on Nov. 8th. On the last night, for our farewell dinner, we will have a potluck with assigned items. In between, we will have informal happy hours at 5:00 pm and ask folks to bring something to share…if they want.

The rally is limited to 18 rigs. If there are 18 or more signed up, and you would like to go, add your name anyway as there are almost always cancellations.

WE ASKING FOR FULL PAYMENT OF $353 NO LATER THAN OCT. 1ST.

Please make the check out to “Sun City Grand RV Club” and include your signed Trip Application. Please mail to: Mike Holloway 19384 N. Coronado Ridge Dr. Surprise, AZ 85387

October 2017 Grand RVers Page 10

Should you find, at any time, that you cannot go, you are not at risk for losing the cost of the RV space as we do not pay the RV park until the day of arrival. You will lose the $10 trip fee, which is always the case when folks cancel after they have paid.

Please note: There is no need to call the RV Park to make a reservation. Your Wagon Masters are in contact with the park and have reserved the 18 spaces. If you do call the RV Park, be sure to mention that you are from the SUN CITY GRAND RV CLUB. Sun City ANTHEM has a trip there in November as well, but not for the same dates....

No large-group outings/activities are being planned beyond getting together at the RV park. There are so many options for things to do in the San Diego area that we thought it best to allow folks to plan their

own outings. Your Wagon Masters will be bringing lots of info on things to do at our PRE-RALLY

MEETING, WHICH IS SET FOR 4:00pm ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17th, PRIOR TO THE SCG RV CLUB BUSINESS MEETING SET FOR 5:00pm.

Please email Mike at [email protected] if you have questions, concerns or ideas!

BARLEENS ARIZONA OPRY

Superstition RV Park

Apache Junction

February 7th - 10th, 2018

WAGON MASTER NEEDED

The Barleens Rally has become an annual favorite. The talented entertainers at Barleens Ari-zona Opry provide a memorable show of music and fun. February 8th is the Old Time Rock and Roll show. If you remember poodle skirts and pompadours, you won‟t want to miss this show! Rock around the clock to such 50s and 60s rock „n‟ roll favorites as Johnny B Good, Wooly Bully, Surfin USA, Twist & Shout, and much more. But there is more than the Opry: Canyon Lake, Tortilla Flats, Mesa Market Place, Superstition Mountain Museum, and the Goldfield Ghost Town are close by. There are many restaurants in the vicinity. The arrival and departure dates are tentative and will be set by the yet-to-be-determined Wa-gon Master. However, February 8th is the Old Time Rock and Roll Show at Barleens.

LAKE HAVASU, AZ

Havasu Falls RV Resort

February 14th - 18th, 2018

WAGON MASTER NEEDED

Lake Havasu is celebrating the 10th Annual Rockabilly Reunion during this time. It's all about cool cats and chicks, retro-fashion, rock-n-roll oldies music, rat-rods, and more at the 10th Annual Lake Havasu Rockabilly Reunion. Take a three day stroll down nostalgia lane. You can visit the London Bridge and take a boat tour of the lake. It's only a little over an hour drive to Laughlin, NV. All we need is a volunteer to be the Wagon Master.

CIVIL WAR IN THE SOUTHWEST

Picacho Peak RV Park

March 16th – 19th, 2018

WAGON MASTER NEEDED

Each year hundreds of spectators descend on Picacho Peak State Park located half way between Phoenix and Tucson to watch re- enactments of an Arizona Civil War skirmish. Visitors come from around the country to watch more than 200 actors with authentic gear reenact the fur-thest west Civil War battle. There were eight rigs signed up for the 2017 rally but no Wagon Master. So the interest is

there but we need a volunteer to be the Wagon Master.

TEMECULA RALLY

Pechanga Casino RV Park, California

May 15-19, 2018

Wagon Masters: Cheryl and Jim Westfall

Rated 10 10 10 by Good Sams Club, the Pechanga RV Resort and Casino is brand new. It is located in the Temecula Valley, Southern California‟s Wine Country. With over 35 wineries offering award-winning wines, great restaurants, and beautiful gift shops, Te-mecula Valley Wineries have something for everyone. Most all of the wineries are open to the public daily. Wine tasting prices vary by winery; no appointments are needed. San Diego and Oceanside are both less than an hour away. The weather in late April and early May is usually very nice. The dates are now locked in. Cheryl and Jim Westfall have agreed to be the Wagon Masters conditional on having a maximum of 10 rigs plus themselves for a total of 11. The first 10 people who signed up on the original interest list were moved to this list..

BALLOON FIESTA

Albuquerque, New Mexico

October 5th -10th, 2018

WAGON MASTER NEEDED Attend one of the premier hot air balloon gatherings in the United States with hot air balloons from across the US as well as many foreign countries. It is a real spectacle! Events consist of mass ascensions, balloon glows, fireworks, and

much more. The real thrill is when the balloons are right over your unit!!!!! The dates are tentative be-cause the 2018 Schedule has not yet been published. We want to post this rally early in order for a Wagon Master to have the opportunity to start planning.

God bless our traveling home,

And guide us wherever we roam.

Help us find the roads we seek,

And please don’t let the plumbing leak.

Save us, please, from engine trouble,

And mechanics who would charge us double.

As we travel on our way,

Bless us with sunshine every day.

And while you’re watching over all,

Could you let gas prices fall?

Lead us toward good food and friends,

And when at last our journey ends,

Grant our rolling home sweet rest,

Until the next endurance test.

EXPERIENCE ELK!

If you have yet to experience the spine-tingling sensation of a bull elk bugle, the time is now! The elk will "rut" for the next several weeks, and they always put on quite a show!

Luckily, several of our state parks are situated within elk country! Try Fool Hollow, Lyman Lake, or Tonto Natural Bridge to have a good chance of experiencing this yearly phenomenon! Disclaimer...Please keep your distance; bull elk may be a little aggressive this time of year! To increase the likelihood of an encounter, get out there EARLY and lis-ten for bugles.

Slowly walk towards the sound, with the wind in your face (elk have an in-credible sense of smell) while scanning ahead with a set of binoculars.

Experiencing the elk rut is like nothing else! Adrenaline will course through your veins, and before you know it, the moment will totally consume you. For more information about elk and their habits, visit the Arizona Game and Fish elk information page.

PRESERVING ARIZONA'S NATURAL RESOURCES

Recently designated as an International Dark Skies Park by the International Dark-Sky Association, Kartchner Caverns now boasts serious attractions both below AND above ground! This distinction is a tremendous honor and one shared with only a handful of State Parks across the country and only one other in the state! In addition to cave tours, park visitors may also take part in night events such as the upcoming Astronomy Program and Star Night.

GEOLOGY HIKE October 8: Red Rock State Park The same erosion that has shaped Sedona into the picturesque landscape of today is responsible for exposing a geologist's dream! This 2.5 mile guided hike will help explain the history and transformation principles associated with creating this beautiful setting.

2nd Sunday of the month (Oct.-May) 1 p.m.

Red Rock State Park is located at the base of the Mogollon Rim, the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. The escarpment is over 200 miles long and ranges in elevation from 2,000 to 3,000 feet. Over millions of years of erosion the rim has receded over four miles leaving behind picturesque features of Sedona. Join our knowledgeable volunteers as they venture out on the trails and discuss how Sedona transform into what you see today.
