January President’s Message

Dear HDS Members,

The 2014 HDS Annual Awards Banquet was a lot of fun. At the start of the presentation, I reviewed HDS rider success at 2014 national competitions. HDS riders had a great year and were very competitive. Here are some highlights:

NAJYRC: Junior Team 5th, Young Rider Team 7th, Cassie Schmidt was Junior Freestyle Silver Medalist.

FEI Festival of Champions: Jessica Fan was FEI Pony Reserve Champion, Cassie Schmidt was Junior Champion.

Dressage Seat Equitation Medal Finals: Bronwyn Cordiak was 14-18 Year Division Champion, Nia Kinney was 13 and Under Division Reserve Champion.

Young & Developing Dressage Horse National Championships: Two of the five champions were owned by Houstonians.

2014 US Dressage Finals: Eva Oldenbroeck-Tabor was Intermediate-B Reserve Champion.

In addition, a comparison of average USDF Regional Championship scores with only Region 9 Championship scores shows Region 9 riders performed comparable to the rest of the country. Region 9 is on a roll! Congratulations to all those who won 2014 awards. Let’s hope 2015 is a strong year as well.

Prize Money Announced for Great American/USDF

Regional Dressage Championships - The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) and Great American Insurance Group are pleased to announce the prize money for the 2015 Great American/USDF Regional Dressage Championships Series, presented by SmartPak and supported by Merial. Prize money totaling over $160,000 will be awarded at the 2015 Great American/USDF Regional Championships, divided evenly among the nine regions and 35 divisions that are offered, allowing each region to present competitors with over $18,000 in prize money and awards. Champions in each region and division will receive $306 in prize money and an embroidered jacket and gift certificate provided by SmartPak, official supplement feeding system of USDF. Reserve champions in each region and division will receive $204 in prize money, along with a saddle pad provided by the Great American Insurance Group, title sponsor of the championships. USDF Congratulates New L Program Graduates - The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce that 44 USDF members successfully completed the USDF L Education Program in 2014. This program is designed to prepare candidates to enter the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) “r” Judges Training Program, to qualify individuals to judge schooling shows, and to give competitors, trainers, and instructors greater insight into the evaluative process of judging dressage. The program also serves to provide continuing education for licensed judges. The L Program is an excellent opportunity for all USDF members to learn how to improve their scores and improve their ability to view other rides from a judge’s perspective, whether or not they plan on becoming licensed judges themselves. USDF L Program faculty are all approved USEF Senior (“S”) dressage judges, who also have experience in teaching judge-training programs. View the full list here

Williams Elected Chair of USEF High Performance Dressage Committee - The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is pleased to announce that Elisabeth Williams has been elected as the Chair of the High Performance Dressage Committee effective immediately. Williams replaces Janet Foy as Chair of the Committee, but who will remain on the committee, and will serve the remaining two years of the term. “I am deeply honored to have been entrusted with this position. In this extremely important year for U.S. High Performance Dressage, I will strive to do my utmost to, with the aid of everyone else involved, achieve our highest expectations," said Williams. USEF Announces Plans for 2015 Dressage Youth Program - The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is pleased to announce plans for the 2015 USEF Dressage Youth Program. Under the direction of recently named USEF Dressage Youth Coaches George Williams and Charlotte Bredahl-Baker, the revamped Youth Program will incorporate expanded support for the Platinum Performance/USDF Jr/YR Clinics, rider meetings, coaching support at major events, Outreach Clinics, and a Young Rider European Tour. The USEF Youth Dressage Program is part of the overall pipeline of the USEF Dressage Program which is supported by the USET Foundation.

Taking place once again in each of the nine USDF Regions, the Platinum Performance/USDF Jr/YR Clinics will provide educational opportunities for youth riders age 14-21, and riders 12- and 13-years-old riding FEI ponies. These clinics will be alternately led by Williams, Bredahl-Baker, and other highly respected instructors. Also continuing in 2015 will be rider meetings held at competitions where the coaches are in attendance and coaching support at the NAJYRC, U.S. Dressage Festival of Champions presented by The Dutta Corp., and the USEF Dressage Seat Medal Finals. USEF Seeking U.S. Dressage Young Horse Coach - The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is seeking a U.S. Dressage Young Horse Coach. The application and job description can be found here. Individuals interested in serving as the U.S. Dressage Young Horse Coach must submit applications no later than February 13, 2015. The new U.S. Dressage Young Horse Coach will replace Scott Hassler, who is stepping down from the position effective May 1, 2015. Hassler has served in the position since 2006. 2015 USEF Dressage Tests Published - The 2015 United States Equestrian Federation Dressage Tests have been published on USEF.org. The 2015 Tests will be effective December 1, 2014 through November 30, 2018. View the tests and read more here

Drugs and Medications Update for 2015 Competition Year - Effective December 1, 2014, and for the 2015 competition year, the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) has implemented withdrawal practices following Intraarticular Injections and Shockwave Therapy as a result of rule changes passed at the USEF Annual Meeting in January, 2014. For Intraarticular Injections a four day withdrawal time from competition has been instituted, while a three day withdrawal from competition for Shockwave Therapy has been implemented. USEF Names Young Rider, Junior Rider, and Child Rider Teams for CSIO Wellington - The following teams and athletes have been named by the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) to represent the U.S. in FEI Nations Cup competitions during CSIO Wellington, Feb 25 - March 1, 2015 at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, Fla. On Saturday, February 28, the International Arena will showcase the future of the sport in the FEI Young Riders Nations Cup presented by Hollow Creek Farm, the FEI Junior Riders Nations Cup presented by Hollow Creek Farm, and the FEI Children’s Nations Cup presented by Hollow Creek Farm. Kathy Connelly and Betsy Steiner Team Up for Nutrena/USDF Adult Clinic Series - The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce the return of Kathy Connelly and Betsy Steiner as co-clinicians for the next Nutrena/USDF Adult Clinic Series. The series will be begin in the spring of 2015 and run through March of 2017, with a clinic in each of USDF's nine regions. Kathy Connelly is a USEF “S” Judge, USDF Honorary Instructor, and a well-respected international dressage rider, trainer, coach, and judge. She is known for her amicable personality and non-intimidating teaching style. She also served as the commentator for the 2010 World Equestrian Games, as well as the 2013 US Dressage Finals presented by Adequan. As a coach, Kathy has excelled with students having competed on Olympic teams, at the World Cup, the World Equestrian Games, the Pan American Games, the Canadian World Cup, and the North American Junior Young Rider Championships. Betsy Steiner is also a USDF Honorary Instructor, as well as an international dressage rider, trainer, and coach. Betsy has represented the United States at the World Equestrian Games in Stockholm, Sweden in 1990, as well as providing commentary for videos of the 1995 World Cup, the 1996 Olympic Games, and Dressage at Devon in 2001. Through her numerous books and ventures, Betsy focuses on training not only the horse but also the rider, physically and mentally. She is also the creator of EQUILATES™ -- a sport-specific Pilates-based exercise and body awareness program for the equestrian. Read more here
