November 2019
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Well, what a FANtastic October General
Meeting we had! Nick and Diane Marson
were every bit as charming and amusing as
Lin promised. They even joined us for
lunch at Ambriza afterwards. Can’t wait for
March and the opportunity to see the musi-
cal, Come From Away.
Our membership is increasing with each
meeting, and that is encouraging. Remem-
ber to extend an invitation to friends. Word
of mouth is the best advertising.
The Heavenly Holiday Soiree Charity
Luncheon is just around the corner as is
the Holiday Cookie Exchange, but before I
rush the month away I want to take time to
say how thankful I am for this organization.
I treasure each and every one of the new
friendships I’ve made.
This month I encourage you to take some
time to reflect on what you are thankful for.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Jennifer Banks, President

Safety tips for holiday shopping and travel on FAN agenda
Whether strolling a European plaza, watching samba parades in Rio or shopping at Houston’s
Galleria, it’s important to pay attention.
Women can be safer if they are aware, according to Carlos Barron, a 25-year veteran of
the Federal Bureau of Investigation, He will detail ways to reduce one’s risk of crime, using real-
life examples, at FAN’s November 5 General Meeting.
An expert in drug-trafficking investigations here and abroad, Barron is now a principal of
US Traveler Assist (USTA), a firm he and two other senior security specialists founded in 2016 to
provide American tourists, students and business travelers abroad with expert, local resources in
case of security or safety issues. Their extensive contacts in Latin America, Europe, Asia and the
Middle East are former senior US Embassy officials with extensive expertise in local law enforce-
ment and US Embassy procedures, plus vast networks of native contacts.
Here and abroad, it is being alert to one’s surroundings, wary and acting on one’s misgiv-
ings, that can keep you safe. Mr. Barron will share his insights with FAN members and guests.
Coffee service is at 9:30 a.m. with a brief business meeting at 10:00, followed immediately
by Barron’s presentation. For more information, visit: www.facebook.com/FAN1960Club.

Laugh or cry with fellow film-lovers
If you enjoy good movies – or fun films -- be sure to
check out FAN’s Monday Matinee group. Among films
we’ve enjoyed this year: The Favourite, Widows, Five
Feet Apart, Mary Queen of Scots, Colette, A Simple Fa-
vor, A Star is Born, Crazy Rich Asians and Yesterday.
Coming soon to a theater near you: Ford v Ferra-
ri, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (Tom Hanks as
Mr. Rogers), Cats, Little Women and Playing With Fire, a
hilarious-looking comedy.
So join us on the third Monday each month! Sign
up at the General Meeting for Monday Matinee or send
your email address to Lin Fish at [email protected] to
be on the list. A few days prior to the third Monday of the
month, I email the movie-lovers on the list with the film
title, time and theater. And sometimes there’s a bonus
when good movies are plentiful!
Leave something behind at
Faithbridge?
If you’ve left something at Faithbridge
after a FAN General Meeting, send an
email to Lin Fish at [email protected].
She picks up after each meeting and takes
with her any “lost” items.
Did you leave a black windbreaker
with gold embroidery at last April’s meet-
ing? She still has it … just one month
more.
Come From Away … With FAN!
Tickets are still available for the March 7, 2020, matinee of Come From Away, the Broadway mu-
sical that tells, in part, the love story of Diane and Nick Marson, who were FAN’s terrific guest
speakers at the October General Meeting.
The Marsons were warm and humorous as they detailed their initial ordeal on 9/11, when
U.S. air space was closed to all air traffic, stranding them with nearly 7,000 other passengers and
flight crews at Gander, Newfoundland. The musical details how the good people of Gander Island
came together to host – feed, clothe and house – their unexpected guests, including dogs, cats and
a pair of rare Bonobo apes.
FAN has group sales tickets for the March 7 matinee, priced at $70, $85 and $100. They will
be available first come at the November 5 General Meeting. Be prepared to write a check payable
to FAN; your spouse or guest is welcome, too. Should tickets continue to be available, FAN
members may purchase more than two. Select the price range you prefer, and tickets will be as-
signed in the order they are paid for.
A Precinct 4 bus has been reserved; please indicate when you buy tickets if you will plan to
ride the bus for a modest fee, and your interest in lunch before the 2:00 p.m. curtain. Reservations
will be made at a nearby restaurant, likely to be Diana’s, which is fabulous and $$$$.
Membership Report
We have five new members to welcome to FAN!
Please add them to your membership directory. If your contact information has changed, please let me know so I can keep our membership information up to date.
As of October 1, FAN membership is 237. Our Board has set a goal of growing the member-ship to 260 this year. So, continue to tell your friends about FAN and invite them to our next meeting.
The helpful ladies at the membership table at the October meeting were Marilyn Ablard, Judy Gunn, Betty Maxson and Krystyna Warwick. Thanks for your help Ladies!

FRIENDS OF FAN Spotlight
This is a great month to visit our Friends of FAN for your upcoming holiday celebrations.
HAUTE BOUTIQUE is located at 6915 Cypresswood Drive, Suite D (near Stuebner Airline - same center as Has-ta La Pasta) (832-482-2216). Stop in and check out this lovely shop. I did and bought two blouses just alike but dif-ferent colors.
Haute Boutique offers beautiful clothes, accessories, and fashion help. The staff is so friendly and helpful. Be sure to tell them you are a member of FAN, mention their directory ad and receive 10% off one regular priced item. I love their store and think you will too, especially for your holiday shopping and party attire.
A DOG’S LIFE PET SALON & BOUTIQUE is located at 7812 Louetta Road in Spring (281-370-3647). They have been a FAN advertiser for many years. They offer award-winning bathing and grooming. Their goal is to provide a superior grooming experience for pets and their owners in a professional, pleasant and safe environment. They believe each pet deserves a positive, stress-free grooming experi-ence with a well-trained, compassionate, skilled groomer. Their motto is “our baths hurt a lot less.” Want a spa pack-age for your favorite four-legged friend? They have it. They also offer special treats for your furry friends. Give them a try – I did and my two little Shih Tzu’s have never looked cuter and will no longer go anywhere else to be groomed and pampered! Especially for all your holiday company, think “A Dog’s Life” for beautiful fur-babies.
FRATELLINI RISTORANTE ITALIANO, 8905 Louetta Road, Spring, between Champion Forest and Champions Drive. Call 281-251-0441 for reservations or questions. This restaurant is a long-time Friend of FAN. We have held ac-tivity group meetings and many luncheons there. They offer dinner, dinner parties, catering, and live piano and sax mu-sic on weekends. They have an extensive menu and full bar. They serve homemade Italian food, great wine and offer great service. Their menu includes starters, soups, salads, pasta, seafood, veal, steak, chicken, and pizza. Check out their discount coupon in our FAN directory.
Sue Behnke says, “Fratellini is a favorite source for cater-ing or take out. You will not be disappointed.” Give them a try, especially for your holiday entertaining.
Please remember to support our Friends of FAN every chance you get, especially during this holiday season. Tell your friends about them and don’t forget to mention that you heard of them from our FAN directory and that we certainly appreciate their support!

Antiquers and Junkers
Come try Antiquers and Junkers! Everyone is welcome! This group meets on the third
Wednesday each month at a different
hostess’ home for coffee, then on to a fun-
filled day of antiquing, eating and shop-
ping.
We travel in carpools. Each person is re-
sponsible for the cost of her lunch and
$5.00 to her driver.
This month we are meeting at the home of
Pat Quackenbush on November 20 at
9:00 a.m. Her address and phone num-
ber are in the Directory. From there we
will carpool to Old Katy and Brookwood
with lunch at Midway BBQ.

noon, Monday, November 18, if you are
coming. Late Monday I will email every-
one who is coming so you can arrange
your carpools.

TREASURER’S REPORT
Super meeting this month with great attend-
ance and lots of guests!! The “Come from
Away” 9/11 love story was amazing. Our 50/50
Raffle grossed $197. That means FAN benefit-
ed to the tune of $98.50 and Lena Habiby
and Sharon Jeremenko each got $49.25!
Amazingly, Sharon was a guest of Lena … we
sure know how to welcome our guests!
Thanks to Char Marks, Sharlene Nelson
and Sue Behnke for helping sell raffle tickets
in September, and to Harolene Hatley and
Dora Dean for helping me this month.
SOOO … plan to get your tickets in November.
You (and your guest too) could be a big win-
ner!!
On another subject, please remember to bring
your checkbook to all FAN events. Unfortu-
nately, we do not take credit cards … it just
costs FAN too much to provide this service to
our members. Sorry!
