As we approach the start of a fourth month of social distancing/quarantine/whatever-you-want-to-call-it, I hope each of you is finding ways to cope and to find enjoyment in your lives. I’m grateful that we live in rural Arizona, where the edicts of government haven’t been as crazy as in other parts of the country. I think as long as we are aware of our own risks and those of others around us, and try to accommodate those risks and fears, we can get through this in a way that doesn’t needlessly endanger us and others.
We have certainly seen lately that the people from the valley, the “flatlanders”, would rather be here than there- wow, is the traffic crazy! Sadly, many of the car shows and other automotive events have been cancelled for the foreseeable future, but I do see there are a few in our state. We are trying to shift gears with our plans to do stuff that is inherently safe in today’s world. We will understand those who choose to be even more cautious than that. When all is said and done, we are each re-sponsible for our own safety and well-being, whatever accomplishes that.
I was gratified by the turnout to our first “Covid Cruise” and club meeting and hope that many will choose to join us for a re-run. This may become a regular thing if things continue to call for the measures we now enjoy (or endure). I miss driving my classics on a regular basis. I’m thinking of just taking them out for a Sunday drive like we did when I was a kid. Hope you find a way to find joy in this time, also!

The comedian Rodney Dangerfield built a career around the catch phrase, “I don’t get no respect!” If there were a
part of an engine that could relate to Mr. Dangerfield’s lament, it is the lowly PCV (“positive crankcase ventilation”) valve. When was the last time you had a discussion about PCV valves?
So, are you tired of driving your classic car around the block and then spending the next hour cleaning up the engine compartment / fire wall / valve covers from a film of oil. How about fighting those nagging oil leaks that never seem to go away. Got sticking hydraulic lifters that don’t always pump up like they should. How about that sludge build up you find in your engine during a rebuild. Well, I have the cure for all of those ailments – and it’s not new. It’s called “positive crankcase ventilation”, or PCV for short. It’s been around for many years and it has often gotten a bad rap by many of us as it has a direct link to emission controls. Simply put, if you are driving on the street, your engine should have a PCV system. The problem with existing PCV valves on the market today is that they are tailored to work with stock, off the showroom floor vehicles. Make one engine modification ( cam, intake, carb, exhaust ) or drive train change, and that stock PCV valve no longer does it’s job as it was originally intended. That situation, unfortunately, applies to most of us.
Well, there is a solution, and you can find it at www.mewagner.com. Like most stock PCV valves, it has two stages – idle and cruise. The big plus is that the Wagner valve is fully adjustable, so you can tailor it to your exact engine / drive train combination.
I just finished installing my second Wagner PCV valve in my 74 Duster ( I now own two cars with no oil leaks ). The kit comes complete with all the tools and hardware you will need (except a vacuum gauge) for any application and has very easy to understand instructions. Your engine will thank you for living in a vacuum! John
