2017 has proved to be a pivotal year for defining and executing a strategic Marketing and Membership Campaign for Cripple Creek. In October of 2016, the Committee met to outline our goals, action plans and time lines for the coming year. We wanted to broaden the Club brand through our website and expanded use of social media. We wanted to develop programs aimed at member retention, membership upgrades, new member recruitment and bringing in younger members and their families to ensure the future health of our Club for years to come. I am happy to report that those goals have been achieved to a large extent. Achievements of this Membership Committee include:
• Redesign and expansion of the Club website with striking photographs of the course and clubhouse with a user-friendly feel.
• Increased posting activity and hits/likes on Facebook to further amplify the Club brand.
• A Cripple Creek promotional video was produced, distributed to the membership, and posted on the Club website. Another 30-second tease video is in final production to be used in targeted social media outreach.
• Developed a program to attract Full Golf memberships and to encourage existing members to upgrade their membership class.
• Developed a program for younger families to join the Club and use the facilities in the afternoons when usage has typically been slow. To date, 40 members and their families have joined as Executive Members.
• Sixteen existing members have taken advantage of the opportunity to upgrade their membership class.
• From January 1 to date 82 new members have joined the Club.
• Total membership now stands at 581.
• Exceeded budget projections for annual membership dues.
• Plans are being developed to offer a targeted marketing plan to the new NV/Ryan subdivision on Irons Lane which will have 191 lots and will be known as Bethany Grove. Home deliveries are expected in the second quarter of 2018.
• Focused on improving member communications with weekly e-mail information about events at the Club.
Many thanks to Megan Ellis and Brian Trout for their enthusiasm in making this Campaign a success. Thanks also to Membership Committee members Tappy Phillips, Steve Morgan, Phil Barton, Dick Malone, Don Sheeler and Adele Reynolds for their volunteer time and spirit. This has been my last year on the Board, and I could not think of a finer Committee to collaborate and work with. Best wishes for continued success for years to come.

One of the many good things that happened at the club this year was the great work done attracting new
members. With new members come increased play and more wear and tear to the golf course. So, it is a good
time to remind everyone to fill in their divots on the fairways and fix their ball marks on the greens.
Superintendent Glen MacDonald and his staff appreciate all that the membership does in helping keep the golf
course in great shape particularly all the Adopt-A-Holers who have worked so hard this season. Keep watch
for information about the appreciation dinner scheduled for October 27.
Fall aeration of tees, greens and fairways begins September 18 and continues through much of that week. I
have talked about aeration in earlier Chronicle articles, but it never hurts to explain why this practice is one of
the most critical preventative maintenance measures that Glen takes, particularly for our greens. Aeration does
several very important things. It reduces the accumulation of excess thatch and increases water filtration.
Improved access to water allows for deeper rooting and turf growth. It relieves soil compaction allowing more
oxygen to get to the grass plants root system. Deep, healthy roots demand oxygen which they get from tiny
pockets of air trapped between soil and sand particles. Over time, traffic from golfers and mowing equipment
will compact the soil. When this happens the air pockets on which the roots depend are eliminated and the
roots are essentially left gasping for air and eventually die. Aeration allows the soil to retain air space which
helps the grass plants stay healthy. So, for the next couple of weeks when you are putting on slightly bumpy
greens, remember that aeration is a short-term disruption that has long-term benefits for the golf course.

MISGA by Robert Allen
Lots of chances to play MISGA mixers in September. Aeration of the Cripple Creek golf
course will occur the week of September 18, so we have scheduled away MISGA’s that
week. All three courses scheduled are really good; we are sure you will enjoy playing any
of them. If you decide to go to one or more of the mixers, and would be willing to drive,
contact MISGA representative Robert Allen, and he will set up some car pools. Please sign
up for these mixers on the signup sheets in the pro shop. The away MISGAs scheduled for the week of
September 18 are as follows:
• Monday, September 18, Maple Cale, Dover, Delaware
• Tuesday, September 18, Hog Neck, Easton, Maryland
• Thursday, September 21, Wild Quail, Camden, Wyoming , Delaware
Other away MISGAs in September are:
• Tuesday, September 12 at Jonathans’ Landing, Magnolia, Delaware
• Monday, September 25 at Eagle Creek at the Dover Air Force base (sign up for this away MISGA
by Monday, September 18 because of security regulations at the Base.)
As always, if you have questions about MISGA, contact Robert Allen at [email protected], or

August was another busy month for the CC Ladies 18 Hole golf. Mother Nature sent some challenging
weather our way, threating each event, but waited until we finished playing to show her force. Thank you

Our Championships have concluded for the 2017 golf season and we would like to congratulate the following winners: Men’s Club Champion – Jeff Baxter Ladies’ Club Champion – Sandy Bunting Men’s Senior Club Champion – John Pearson Ladies’ Senior Club Champion – Sandy Bunting Our Men’s Member Guest Tournament was once again a sell-out event. Congratulations to this year’s champions Jake Booth and Tyler Dickerson. A special shout-out to Dan Murphy as he had his first hole in one in this year’s tournament. The Committee would like to express their thanks to Glen, Andy, and the entire Golf Staff for their outstanding work leading up to and during this event. The 2017 golf season has been exceptional with wonderful participation in most of the events held. Our instructional program, due mainly to increased demand, led to the addition of “the A Game Golf Academy” for this season. They, along with Ryan Diehl and Tim Foran, have given our members many options when wanting to improve their game. We look forward to continuing the success of this year in our lesson program.
