PRESIDENT’S MESSAGECheryl Curry HFMA Colorado Chapter President 2016-2017

Evidence of the Fall Season is here, with the colorful Colorado landscape and the successful completion of our CO HFMA Fall Retreat in Glenwood Springs. While we have had a Fall “Conference” for several years, this is the 1st year that we intentionally took advantage of the outdoor recreation that is so plentiful in the State of Colorado, and included activities into the programming. A big thanks to Jon Wiik and his planning committee for pulling off such a fun Retreat that included rich educational content, with the bonus of activities like hiking and zip-lining! For those of you who missed it, you will want to consider this Retreat next year!

Gina Eastin, President-Elect and I just returned from the annual Fall Presidents meeting where the Presidents and President-Elects from each of the HFMA Chapters across the US convened for collaboration and planning. HFMA presented the challenge of “leading healthcare stakeholders to meet the challenges of today while creating a sustainable healthcare industry”.

THERE ARE 4 THEMES THAT WERE IDENTIFIED AS THE FRAMEWORK FOR DETERMINING HOW HFMA WILL MEET THIS CHALLENGE.

    1. Provide Easy Access to Relevant Information ■ Updating websites for better navigation is one example

    2. Collaborate to Define & Influence Change ■ We need to build trust between providers and health plans ■ Collaboration with physicians and sharing of data will be crucial to achieve a healthier population

    3. Help “audience” Successfully Navigate Complexity & Pace of Change

    ■ We are in a complex industry with competing priorities. It is hard to keep up!

    4. Invest in Acquiring, Developing & Retaining Talent ■ In addition to continuing professional development, how can we assist in assessing competencies in the hiring pro-cess?

As we discussed each of these themes, we concluded that the Colorado Chapter of HFMA is on the right track with similar goals to meet the needs of our Members. Providing top quality educational events and networking continues to be our venue for meeting these goals.

As you are updating your calendar for the next year, we hope you will consider your local CO HFMA for at least a portion of your professional development needs. Why not kick off 2017 by joining us at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas? The Western Regional Symposium will bring together 13 HFMA Chapters (including Colorado) for compelling education and networking opportunities. Registration is open now. See you in Vegas!

  • Empowered Communication: 4 Strategies to Ignite your Confidence and Reclaim

    Your Power!

Have you ever found yourself in a state of total disempowerment? Maybe someone makes a comment or asks a question and you start second-guessing yourself. You know it’s not necessary to travel along a self-destructive path, but your brain just got emotionally hijacked and you lost perspective. Tired, overwhelmed and drained, it’s hard to even think.

Your ability to feel confident and rise to any challenge – personally and professionally – has a lot to do with your readiness. So what is readiness? First, it’s recognizing that you’ve gotten emotionally hijacked by your brain. Next, it’s having the ability to reclaim your repose. Finally, it’s having a response that ensures your ability to be clear, articulate and confident.

You will have an interactive experience with strategies that allow you to re-engage and manage physiology, prime your thinking, capture energy, and bring on success – over and over again.

Objectives: ■ Participants will build a foundation for self-reflection – a key to managing oneself and one’s learning.

    ■ Participants will walk away with strategies and tools to utilize for themselves and with others.

    ■ Participants will engage in creative exercises and methods that incorporate multiple types of learning styles reflective of the various types of individuals within organizations.
