“Keep New Jersey’s

most precious

natural resource safe;

New Jersey

Ground Water.”

Welcome members and guests of the New Jersey Ground Water Association. As we look to the end of the 2012 year I hope that we can look forward to 2013 and beyond in hopes that our economic situation for our entire country continues to improve and lets all hope that the worst of these times are behind us .

This will be my last Presidents message to the Association, I would like to thank the members of this Association for giving me the opportunity to have served the past two years as your President . I would like to express a special thank you to my fellow officers and board members on the Association

for always having been there when I required any assistance

and for their support . Although there were many objectives that I had wished to have done on behalf of the Association that were

never completed there were always issues which

required a great deal of time and effort such as having

law 7:9D revised and addressed, dealing with the newly formed HVAC Board

as well as looking out for support and protection of our industry .

Regarding our regulations 7:9D, it has been completed and is currently in legal review with in the State office . Regarding the HVAC board, there are still several issues with their proposed

regulation which concern our industry and have been addressed . Fred Sickels, Director Division of Water Supply and Geoscience NJDEP , attended the last meeting of the HVAC board to address the concerns of the NJDEP, which our

Association is in full support of, the HVAC Board will review the concerns and report back, I would like to thank Paul Bent and Gorden Craig for attending that meeting with me to support Mr . Sickels in his presentation .

I would like congratulate the slate of officers for the new year, I am very confident and supportive of the entire slate . Thank you all again for allowing me to be President over this great organization NJGWA, Lets Keep New Jersey’s Most Precious Resource Safe; New Jersey Ground Water .

Gary D. Poppe, President New Jersey Ground Water Association

NGWA “National” News I can’t believe it is fall and winter of 2012 is coming soon. I certainly hope this winter is as mild as the winter of 2011 as everyone benefited from the warm winter weather .

I will complete my term on the NGWA Board of Directors at the 2012 Expo in December . I must say it has been a very rewarding and worthwhile experience . I really enjoyed working with NGWA staff and the Board of Directors for the past 7 years to better our industry and our association .

Speaking of the Expo, I urge you to attend the “2012 NGWA EXPO” in Las Vegas December 4-7. Those of you who have attended past Expo’s can speak to the personal business value and educational benefits that the Expo provides . If you have not attended you are missing out on the biggest and best industry event there is . This is our industry’s premier event where you can spend time with your favorite vendors and industry friends . The EXPO will have a large number and variety of educational courses for business management, technical training, safety, geothermal, ground water management

and quality . You can’t beat the value for the money at EXPO and Vegas is always a great time . Looking forward to seeing you there .

The revisions to NJAC 7:9D have been in legal review for the last few months . The next step will be the public comment period . If all goes well with the legal process the regulations should be released for public comment in December .

If there is anything I can do or anything the NJGWA needs my input on just contact me . I can be reached at 609-548-1983 and my e mail is [email protected] . I will not know all the answers to all your issues but I will research those issues with NGWA staff and get the answers to you .

Get involved, its’ your Association, its’ your industry!!

Typically most of us wound up with the popular and most sold computer routers for our home and office computers .

The popularity of Linksys/Cisco routers can make them targets of malicious hackers . By following a few easy steps you can harden your Linksys router against potential intruders . Unfortunately, cyber attacks are becoming more common place as groups try to mount large DOS (denial of service) attacks on sites for ransom . These attacks are only possible if staged from thousands of endpoints under their control, so more and more efforts are being used to find open networks to access . These efforts begin as scans looking for targets whose defenses are easy or have been compromised by Trojan malware and this very well could be you .

In any event good network practices including virus and security software are essential, but in many cases the router sitting as the gateway device is overlooked and intruders know this. I hate to say it this way but DON’T BE CHEAP! There are free security software packages available that just do not do everything you need . Especially for your office with all the documentation we deal with now and the computers left on 24/7 . Pay the piper and get a real security package . The old adage you get what you pay for .

The following suggestions are simple to configure and will add additional security to any potential threats . Most of these suggestions can and will be applicable for most SOHO routers (small office home office) . These suggestions are not fool proof and even if enacted cannot be a total defense against Trojans and other malicious Malware .

One good suggestion to live by is “if your computer or network just seems like things aren’t right, maybe they aren’t” . So take a few minutes and log into your router and make some basic common sense changes . Here are a few easy configurations on your Linksys router to make your network more secure . If unsure though, call the support line . It’s worth the time you spend even though you know you will be on the phone for ever, a least that’s how long any customer service or support lines seem to be anymore .

Easy steps to lock down your Linksys router.

First log into your router and • Change the Default Password . Use a password that is harder to crack than using just a lowercase word . Add some digits, an uppercase letter and even a symbol for extra password strength .

Your Linksys/Cisco router has a setting •to Block WAN Requests (wide area network) from the outside . It may be disabled by default and you should keep this setting enabled because it hides your IP address . When it is enabled, the router will drop both the unaccepted request coming from the Internet . The hacker will not find your routers IP address .

Change the IP address of the router itself.• The default IP address of popular routers will be the first IP address scanned . Changing that address adds just another layer of complexity for a potential hacker .

You arrive at your hotel and check in at the front desk . When checking in, you give the front desk your credit card (for all the charges for your room) . You get to your room and settle in .

Someone calls the front desk and asks for (example) Room 620 - which happens to be your room . The phone rings in your room . You answer and the person on the other end says the following, ‘This is the front desk . When checking in, we came across a problem with your charge card information . Please re-read me your credit card number and verify the last 3 digits numbers at the reverse side of your charge card .’

Not thinking anything, you might give this

person your information, since the call seems to come from the front desk . But actually, it is a scam of someone calling from outside the hotel/front desk . They ask for a random room number . Then, ask you

for credit card information and address information . Sounding so professional, that you do, thinking you are talking to the front desk .

If you ever encounter this problem on

your vacation, tell the caller that you will be down at the front desk to clear up any problems . Then, go to the front desk and ask if there was a problem . If there was none, inform the manager of the hotel that someone called to scam you of your credit card information, acting like a front desk employee .

“But actually, it is a scam.”
