President’s Column

During January and February there has been much activity in both front and back of house. I would like to congratulate Karina Johns who has been promoted to the position of Dining Room Supervisor. Beth Kirchner has completed her apprenticeship in cookery and I am happy to say will continue with the Alexandra Club. Chefs Mel Brooks and Beth Candy are producing “home-made muesli” for guests staying at the Club. Several beds and air conditioning units are being replaced on the 4th Floor. General cleaning and maintenance such as the dry cleaning of the curtains, bedhead covers and bedspreads have been attended to.

The Club website was launched in June 2014. The website photos and access to Club information via the website has been ongoing. Simon Griffiths, renowned photographer, has taken photographs throughout the Club. These photos will enable our Members and Reciprocal Members to make an informed decision regarding accommodation including size and availability of bedrooms. The photographs will be accompanied by a description of each room. There will be continual upgrades to our website and Members will be advised of any changes via the Bulletin.

All our beautiful paintings have been professionally photographed for

archival purposes and some of the photographs will be converted into cards for sale at the Club. The Tim Maguire light boxes, generously on loan from the Australian Club, are being installed in March.

Our interest groups and programmed events for February were happy and popular with Members and their guests.

The Building Committee met with Lovell Chen Architects on 15 December 2015. Lovell Chen presented its very detailed floor-by-floor Pre-Design Audit findings. The conclusion of the report was that the building is sound and well maintained. Non-compliance issues are expected with services based on their date of installation and some issues of capacity, water proofing, energy efficiency, inefficient and out-dated kitchen, mechanical systems, loss of space due to substation located in the basement and poor audio visual throughout the building.

Lovell Chen suggested possible improvements that would create better efficiency and utilise the spaces within the Club for our ever-growing programme. One suggestion was to relocate the kitchen and all services necessary to a kitchen in the basement. This would allow delivery access from Strachan Lane and

ultimately allow the kitchen to function more efficiently.

Refurbishment of the Club, particularly the areas previously identified in past Bulletins, should be done within the context of the overall infrastructure of the building to ensure future amenities and renewals of services are aligned. The Committee and Lovell Chen agree in theory that the refurbishment of the basement is the correct approach, as this will enable the project to address, in the short term, the more significant electrical and hydraulic issues which are largely located in the basement.

The next phase of the building programme is a master plan of the entire building. It is important and logical to look at the building in its entirety. This complete floor-by-floor plan will give Committee and Members the Architect’s vision re the brief to maximise space and efficiency of the Club’s function, and its activity spaces for now and the future. At the time of writing this column the Committee had not received the master plan. The Committee and I will keep Members informed of our progress with regular updates in the Bulletin. We also welcome any questions you may have.

NOT JUST A PIECE OF CAKE: BEING AN AUTHOR – HAZEL EDWARDS

Not Just a Piece of Cake takes the reader behind the books. This quirky memoir shares the diverse workstyle of a long term author.

Our speaker says collaborating with illustrators, performers, co-authors and even family heart tugging fan mail, literary speed dating with characters, dealing with the Plateau of Boredom and the Map of Serendipity is part of her daily life, also sharing ‘the process of the writing’ and why storytelling

matters culturally and personally. Why a six year old knew she wanted to be an author.

Hazel Edwards has a cake-eating hippo, an OAM for literature and thousands of book-children, as well as a real family. With over 200 books published, Hazel runs non-boring writing workshops and mentors aspiring writers online. An enthusiastic Reading Ambassador, Hazel has a range of resources for teachers and children to encourage reading and writing within the classroom.

This series conducted by Sylvia Sagona, aims to explore the art, literature, music and society of the Romantic movement of the early 19th century.

Sylvia will investigate the origins of our idea of “romantic love” based on Jean Jacques Rousseau’s emphasis on the importance of feelings and imagination over reason and logic. After the trauma of the Revolution of 1789, writers and artists created a new genre which explored the previously ignored topics of passion, melancholy, death, madness and man’s relation to Nature.

VISIT TO A PRIVATE HOME AND A NOT-FOR-PROFIT GALLERY EXHIBITING EMERGING ARTISTS

OUR COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY ART REFLECTS AN INTEREST IN A VARIETY OF ART MEDIUMS –ANN BENNETTAnn and David Bennett live in a modern warehouse in Armadale, and say it has been important not just to put paintings on walls, but to create a feeling of warmth, atmosphere and style, by introducing a variety of art works made of contrasting materials such as wood, perspex, glass, resin, wool, and bronze. This gives a pleasing texture to their collection. Colour has always been of paramount importance so the paintings and sculptures complement one another.

Ten Cubed is a private gallery located behind a modest 1920s shopfront on Malvern Road. The collection is owned by Dianne Gringlas who working with her sister-in-law Ada Moshinsky, is the conceptual curator behind the art experiment which started this philanthropic project five years ago. Ten Cubed aimed to collect in depth ten contemporary artists working in various media forms over a period of ten years. Dianne has now announced the start of Ten Cubed 2 which seeks to include another ten contemporary artists from around the globe.

WEDNESDAY 23 MARCHREGIONAL DINNER- GUEST CHEF, STEFANO DE PIERI$1107.00 for 7.30pmBlack Tie

Stefano de Pieri was born in Treviso, near Venice and migrated to Australia in 1974. He attended Sydney Road Community School in Brunswick and went on to Melbourne University graduating in Politics and Italian Studies.

Stefano was impressed with the local produce and wines of the Mildura Region, but was frustrated by the lack of recognition of the district. He began imagining a book that would include his food memories from his native Veneto and the produce of Mildura. The book took the title of A Gondola on the Murray which was accepted by ABC Enterprises, the publishing branch of the ABC. It later became a television series of the same name.

Stefano’s Mildura restaurant The Grand became the recipient of many prestigious awards and continues to attract the support of many patrons, locally, interstate and overseas.

Stefano will work with our chefs to create a special three course menu to be served with matching wines.
