Hello! Publishing a book last September was a healthy management exercise for me. It brought me back to all the fundamentals of running a SMALL business…I mean really small! Last month, my little book business did $2,089 in total sales! On the sales side of my book business, I have learned that I sell books one reader at a time. A single, happy, engaged reader becoming a book fan is important.

I want each customer…$26 dollars at a time…to feel important. I need every order to go well for the book to grow! On the expense side, I have to carefully think about every single ac-tivity that costs money. I can only spend money—in small quantities—on the most important activities that are going to directly contribute to improving the quality of the book, or selling more books. As CEO of a company with 479 employees, 10 stores, and 3 mills this has all been a very healthy, unexpected benefit of having written a book. It reminds me how important EVERY customer experience is… how important EVERY expenditure is. Running my book business has also reminded me of the great respect I have always felt for you and the construction company you lead and man-age. I know your company has a lot more revenue than my little book business, but all the same points still apply. The number of projects you do in a year is finite, and each one is critical to your company’s success. Each employee, sub-contractor, and supplier is a CRITICAL member of your team. Each day…each material delivery…each estimate or proposal…is an important document. YOU pay great attention to a lot of SMALL details to keep your company going, growing, and successful.

I just want to say that I have been thinking a lot about this lately and that you should feel proud of what you do and how you do it! It is all those small details, managed across hundreds of construction companies in Maine, that combine to create our state’s home building industry. Well done and thank you for sweating the small stuff! Our goal at Hancock Lumber must always be to help you do that well—one estimate, one order, and one delivery at a time. MARKET WATCH UPDATESFrom Hancock Lumber’s Retail Operations Center

Fir CDX Plywood: Up 12% since end of 1st quarter and flat versus same time 1 year ago.

OSB: up 12% since 1st quarter and up 20% versus same time 1 year ago.

Advantec/Zip: Up 10% since end of 1st quarter and up 10-12% versus same time 1 year ago.

2x4 through 2x10 #2 and Better SPF: Up 6% since the end of 1st quarter and flat versus same time 1 year ago.

Cedar Clapboards: Supply continues to be difficult. Finger joint CVG is on allocation and prices continue to move upward.

Douglas Fir clear vertical grain boards, pattern stock, and dimension supply has be-come a major issue. Hancock’s major supplier has stock outages on this product, and they have started stocking clear vertical grain Hemlock/Fir in some patterns as an alternative.

Azek-PVC Decking: manufacturers’ lead times have extended to 4- 6 weeks. Our distribu-tor is working hard to stay in-stock. TimberTech cap stock supply is OK.

OTIF RESULTS. Your top priority is ours as well! That is why we thor-oughly record, track, and review on time and in full delivery metrics. Our goal is continuous improvement and we strive for 100% accuracy. Thank you for your ongoing help in planning and communicating.

REPORTED TRENDS. Key product pricing and availability trends as report-ed from our Product Management Team are shown here.

Please contact the ROC Team or your Account Manager with any questions: [email protected]

LP SmartSide engineered siding sales are growing; look to this product as a good alternative to Cedar clapboards or Fiber Cement siding.

CODE UPDATE. Above ground treated lumber is now part of the American Wood Preservers Association (AWPA) standards and IRC code. The 2016 AWPA Book of Standards has now been published and the new U1 Standard guidelines are now in effect. The AWPA U1 Standard change establishes new guidelines for when wood should be treated to the UC4A Ground Contact General Use category in situations that simu-late ground contact, such as:

In addition, the new AWPA Standard states that above ground wood compo-nents, including joists and beams for decks and fresh water docks, shall be treated to Ground Contact UC4A when they would be:

•Difficulttomaintain,repair,orreplace;and

•Criticaltotheperformanceandsafetyoftheentiresystem.

When there is a reasonable expectation that soil, veg-etation, leaf litter or other debris may build up and re-main in contact with the component

When the construction itself, other structures or an-ticipated vegetation growth will not allow air flow to circulate underneath the construction and between decking boards

When components are installed less than six inches above ground (final grade after landscaping) and sup-ported on permeable building materials (e.g. treated wood or concrete)

When components are in direct contact with non-du-rable untreated wood, or any older construction with any evidence of decay

When components are wetted on a frequent or reoc-curring basis (e.g. on a freshwater floating dock or by a watering system)

When components are used in tropical climates.

Hancock retail stores now stocking ground contact pressure treated products. Please check with your local store for availability.

NEW HIRES AND LOCATION RENOVATIONS!Hancock reinvestments: from people to places, all to service you better!

Kennebunk 2.0 Launched in April! Hancock’s new-

est, state-of-the-art lumberyard and design center

is now up and running in Kennebunk! Using years of

planning and past lessons, builder feedback, and in-

dustry best practices, we are so excited about what

we’ve created at our 95 York Street location.

From digital end caps and message centers, to a com-

pletely shoppable drive-thru lumberyard, and a beau-

tiful kitchen design center, every detail and decision

was made carefully and with our customers and em-

ployees in mind.

Additional Reinvestments. Hancock Lumber has made big reinvestments in our design showrooms around the company, including re-

branding the experience with our Home Again brand. Last year we completed our Brunswick showroom, rebranding it with the Home Again
