In our work life, treat- ing time as a precious resource leads to good decision-making. What people and organizations do I want to be connected to? Who do I want to spend my time with? What do I want to spend my time doing? This is all at the heart of our business values and strategy at Hancock Lum- ber. A work philosophy should enhance and support a life philosophy. First, we want to hang out with great people (employees, customers & suppliers). We want to hang out with people who are organized, collaborative, smart and big-hearted. Getting connected to people who save you time and bring posi- tive energy into your life and work requires conscious thought and effort. Second, we want to work in partnership with customers and suppliers as a single team, not three teams. It is impossible to streamline the construc- tion process with manufacturers, retailers, and contractors operating in silos. We love builders, distributors, and employees that will collaborate, share information, and make time for planning with the goal of increasing accuracy and cutting out waste. It takes time to be thoughtful about the network of people you are connected to. It takes time to plan and build out strategies to increase accuracy and reduce waste. But, the benefits of getting organized with the right people are powerful. In 2016 our accuracy rate (as measure by customer credits) improved again, for the 10th year in a row—this time by 5%. Our delivery efficiency (as measured by the volume of product on a truck) also increased again—this year by 8%. These types of metrics are not just—or even pri- marily—about making money; they are about that precious resource, time. Freeing up time is a powerful act. Each individual, each company can then decide how they want to re-invest that time and energy to make their work and lives more valuable. As this year ends, I am aware and thankful of the people Hancock Lumber hangs out with! Hancock Lumber is nothing more than the people it attracts and by that standard this company is blessed. So, I salute the amazing group of employees, customers, and suppliers that give life to our brand and add value to a world short on time. Thank you! BREAKING NEWS! Hancock Lumber named ProSales Dealer of the Year!

A year seems to go by faster when you get older because it in-creasingly becomes a smaller part of your entire life. When I was a kid, summer vacation alone seemed to last forever. When you are 5, a single year covers 20% of your life. When you are 50, a year accounts for 2% of your life. This is why time accelerates as we get older! There is an advantage to this phenomenon. Time becomes more valuable as you age. You respect it more. You come to

terms with your own vulnerability at the hands of time. This can serve to make us more strategic about how we use our time. In our work life, treat-ing time as a precious resource leads to good decision-making. What people and organizations do I want to be connected to? Who do I want to spend my time with? U.S./Canadian Softwood Lumber Agreement | The Soft-wood Lumber Agreement ended its nine-year run in October 2015. After more than a yearlong standstill, there is still no agreement. And, it doesn’t look like there will be one any-time soon. The Committee Overseeing Action for international Trade Investigations or Negotiations (Coalition) petitioned the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission to restore the conditions of fair trade in softwood lumber between the United States and Canada. There are too many unknowns to know what may happen and when. With a new U.S administration coming to office there is little chance of resolution anytime soon. With new people entering the ne-gotiations they will basically be starting over from scratch. We will continue to keep you updated as we learn more.

Simpson Strong-Tie has announced a 6% increase on all connectors and steel shear walls, effective De-cember 1,2016. Since January 2016, U.S. Steel prices have increased more than 50%.

Allura Fiber Cement boards, no price increase.

Cedar 2x4 and 2x6 is up 4-8%. All cedar products will be increasing in cost, however, the exact amount is unknown at this time. Cedar clapboards continue to be difficult to get especially vertical grain products, both solid and finger-jointed.

Douglas fir boards and pattern stock availability from mills is challenging, depending on the product. The good news? Prices have stabilized.

Dow sheathing announced a 2-5% price increase.

Homasote boards are also experiencing a price in-crease of 2-5%.

OSB prices continue to be 20% higher than this time last year, but have traded within a $10-$15 per thou-sand range for the last six months.

Sierra Pacific windows has announced a price in-crease range from 4% - 9% effective January 5th, 2017 for their aluminum clad, all-wood, and vinyl product lines.

Kitchen cabinet companies have announced price increases ranging from 3-5%.

VERILOCK® SECURITY SENSORS

No one is doing more to make windows and patio doors part of today's smart home than Andersen. Andersen Connect products include patented VeriLock® wireless security sensors, which can be integrated with our hardware. These sensors not only tell you if a window or patio door is open, but also if it's locked or unlocked.* No other sensors can do that.

*When properly configured and maintained with a professionally installed security system and/or self-monitoring system compatible with Honeywell® 5800 controls. See your dealer for more information. **Based on testing of (32) A-Series double-hung windows. Air loss through unlocked windows will vary based on window type and age, pressure differential, temperatures inside and outside the home, altitude and application.†Visit andersenwindows.com/warranty for details. ††200 Series gliding patio doors only.

THE SMARTEST TECHNOLOGY FOR THE SMARTEST HOMES

CONNECTED HOME Now you can monitor your windows and doors when you’re away from home like you can monitor your thermostat or lighting.*

PRESERVES BEAUTY VeriLock sensors come in a variety of colors to complement many Andersen® hardware and interior finishes.

HELPS MAXIMIZE ENERGY EFFICIENCY Windows that are closed, but unlocked lose air at a rate up to 3X that of a closed and locked window.** VeriLock sensors tell you which windows and doors are open or unlocked* so you can manage your units for maximum energy efficiency.

MAINTAINS WARRANTY Other sensors require drilling which can void warranties. Our sensors require no drilling and come with their own limited warranty.†

QUICK, EASY INSTALLATION If you already have Andersen products, VeriLock wireless security sensors can be easily integrated with the hardware.

Whether for new windows and patio doors or those already installed in your home, VeriLock sensors

are available for the following Andersen® products: 400 Series, A-Series, E-Series and 200 Series††

VeriLock® sensors received a 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Honoree Award in the Smart Home category.

Two of Hancock Lumber’s Eastern White Pine Mills have earned certification into the United States Department of Labor’s (USDOL) Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). The USDOL recognizes small business employers who have used OSHA’s consultation program services and operate an exemplary injury and ill-ness prevention program.

Company President, Kevin Hancock, commented on the honor, “Han-cock Lumber’s SHARP certification at our Bethel and Ryefield sawmills is a reflection of the Hancock culture – a place where employee safety, wellness, and engagement are all a top priority. I am so proud to be connected to all our employees who earned this recognition – the lum-ber business is not an easy one, and our team is so good as what they do. Their commitment to workplace safety is world-class.”

“There is a great deal of power to be tapped in creating an organization where everybody leads. . .where everybody makes decisions. . .where everybody’s empowered.”

- Kevin Hancock

Acceptance of a company’s worksite into SHARP from OSHA is a sig-nificant achievement. Fewer than 2,000 companies nationwide have earned SHARP certification. Out of 44,000 companies in Maine, only 63 sites have earned this elite safety certification. In a ‘high-hazard’ industry such as lumber manufacturing, this is a tremendous accom-plishment. Team Hancock’s top priority is safety and every employee takes great pride in his or her role to ensure a safe worksite each day.

Senator Susan Collins sent a hand-written note to congratulate the company, “This prestigious recognition reflects your outstanding com-mitment to workplace safety and wellness. I am delighted to hear of Hancock Lumber’s continued leadership and success…I look forward to your future contributions to the State of Maine in the years to come.”

To qualify for SHARP, companies must undergo a comprehensive audit, correct all hazards identified during an onsite health and safety con-sultation, demonstrate that effective safety and health programs are in place and maintain injury rates below the industry average for the last year of completed data. In addition to recognizing the company for having a highly effective safety and health program, acceptance into SHARP also grants exemption from routine OSHA inspection that can be renewed every two years.

Ryefield Sawmill manager, Mike Shane, hangs the official SHARP flag at the Casco Sawmill.

LOGGING IN 1946A video tour of M.S. Hancock, Casco

Here is a fun video we wanted to share with you from 1946! This video was sent to us by a former Casco resident, and captures our logging and milling operations from 1946. We love this video for a few reasons:

1. It shows how far we have come as an industry, both in efficiency and safety standards.

2. It reflects how resourceful loggers of the day were in getting the trees from the forest to the mill.

3. It captures the foundation of Hancock Lumber, now in our 168th year of business.

Hancock Lumber’s SHARP certification at our Bethel and Ryefield sawmills is a reflection of the Hancock culture – a place where employee safety, wellness, and engagement are all a top priority. I am so proud to be connected to all our employ-ees who earned this recognition – the lumber business is not an easy one, and our team is so good as what they do. Their commitment to workplace safety is world-class.

Hanley Wood’s ProSales Magazine selected Hancock Lumber as their 2017 ProSales Dealer of the Year. “WHAT BRINGS YOU HERE?” the old jewelry maker asked. Moments later, Kevin found himself alone again by the red wooden sign depicting the massacre that occurred here so long ago. As Kevin stood, absorbing the soft wind that always seems

had brought him to this lonely place, and how an old Lakota woman he had just met, an evolutionary astrologist he had never met, and a rare voice disorder he had never heard of had joined forces to make him stop, look inward, and think.

Written and photographed by Kevin Hancock, CEO of Hancock Lumber Company, Not For Sale: Finding Center in the Land of Crazy Horse is anunique iconoclastic memoir that traces one businessman’s journey deep into Indian country, and even deeper into his own soul. In a corporate world hallmarked by the never-ending quest for bigger, better, more, this CEO of one of America’s oldest fam -ily businesses contemplates an organizational structure where the goal is to do less, not more. In a 24/7 internet-wired world consumed with roles, responsibilities, and external accomplishments, Kevin learns to look inward for meaning and purpose.
