• PROJECT:Purchaseandinstallationofcombustionunitstoproduce200,000poundsperofhourofsteamandupto20megawattsofco‐generatedelectricpower,andtherelatedutilitydistribution.

• PURPOSE:CreatereliableutilityinfrastructureservingUniversityofIowaHospitals&ClinicsandHealthSciencesColleges.

• ISSUE:Allbase‐loadsteamandco‐generatedelectricityiscurrentlyproducedattheMainPowerPlantontheeastcampus.Deliveryoftheseutilitiesisdependentuponrivercrossings.Steamisessentialfortheoperationofthehospital–e.g.:hotwater,sterilization.Emergencyco‐generatedelectricity,independentoftheelectricalgrid,isessentialforpatientcareandhealthcenterresearch.

• FLOODof2008:MainPowerPlantoneastcampusisofflineduetofloodwaterinfiltrationofutilitytunnelsystem;UniversityofIowaHospitals&Clinicsisdependentonemergencygeneratorsandinstallationoftemporaryboilers.

SECUREINFORMATIONTECHNOLOGYCENTER

• PROJECT:ConstructionofasecureinformationtechnologycenterontheOakdaleCampus.• PURPOSE:Theinformationtechnologycenterwouldprovidespacetohousesecurelyand

reliablythecomputers(hundredsofservers)andnetworksthatsupportcoreUniversityfunctionsincluding:Universityenterprisesystems(payroll,benefits,studentsystems,emailetc.),patientcareclinicalinformationsystems,collegiateanddepartmentalserversandresearchsystems.

• ISSUE:Currentdatacentersareoutdatedandundersized.Theywerethreatenedinrecentfloodingthusdemonstratingtheirvulnerability.InformationtechnologyhubsarenowlocatedinJessupHall,theLindquistCenterandanoldGeneralHospitalannex.Recentassessmentsofthefacilitiesconcludedtheyaredeficientinalmosteverycriticalcategory:fireprotection,electricalandmechanicalsystems.LossoftheseresourcesthreatenstheabilityoftheUniversityandUIHospitals&Clinicstocarryondailyoperations.

• FLOODof2008: FloodwatersthreatenedtheLindquistCenter.FloodwatersinfiltratedautilityvaultatLindquistcausinganelectricaloutagetotheMainCampusincludingtheJessupHalldatacenter.TheUniversityofIowaHospitals&Clinicsdatacenterwasthreatenedbythelossofeastcampusutilitiesthatimpactedtheentirecampus.

• ESTIMATEDCOST: $31.7million

LIBRARY–SECUREARCHIVEFACILITY

• PROJECT:ConstructionofaclimatecontrolledlibraryarchivefacilityontheOakdaleCampus.TransfervaluableUILibrariesmaterialstothisclimatecontrolled,securefacility.

• PURPOSE:SecurecriticalUILibrarymaterialsinaclimatecontrolledfacilityatasafelocation.ThereisnoroomforthesematerialsattheMainLibraryorsatelliteUILibraries.

• ISSUE:Librarymaterialsmustbeprotectedfromdeteriorationcausedbytimeandbynaturaldisaster.TherecentfloodexposedthevulnerabilityoftheMainLibrary.TheMainLibraryandotherCollegiateLibrariesareexperiencingsevereover‐crowding–boththe“stacks”andmaterialsstorageareasarefull.

• FLOODof2008:FloodwatersthreatenedtheMainLibraryforcingsand‐baggingandtheemergencyrelocationofthousandsofvolumesofmaterials,somerareandextremelyfragile.TheLibraryhadwaterinitsbasementandremainedcloseduntilremedialworkwascompleted.

• ESTIMATEDCOST: $10.9million
