TRANSCRIPT
I love my job. I hope that all of us can say this. If you cannot, you are in the wrong
place.
As paralegals, we find ourselves challenged intellectually, we are problem solvers,
and we are masters at procedure, research, and drafting. Through continuing legal
education, we are constantly learning and keeping abreast of changes in the law and
new trends. We communicate with our own attorneys, opposing counsel, vendors, co
-workers, and clients. We are excellent multi-taskers. Every day brings something
new.
Through certification and tenure, paralegals are no longer just lawyers’ assistants or glorified legal
secretaries. We are constantly working, through organizations like CAPA, to create new standards, set
ourselves apart from those roles and establish ourselves as the lawyer’s wingman.
Most of us concentrate on one or two areas of law. Personal injury paralegals assist clients in
receiving compensation for their losses or in defending against bogus claims. Family law paralegals
navigate nasty divorces and custody cases, as well as bringing forever families together through
adoptions. Intellectual property paralegals help clients protect their unique ideas. Criminal law
paralegals assist in making sure people receive fair trials. This list is long.
Many times paralegals have the most direct contact with the clients. We help them gather documents,
respond to discovery, prepare for depositions, and prepare for trial. We talk to their friends and
witnesses. We are the “go to” people in the firm and the hand-holders. Our assistance helps keep
clients’ costs lower than if they went directly to the attorney.
As we forge ahead as trailblazers in the legal field and bringing about awareness of what a paralegal
actually is, make sure you are doing what you love and loving who you work with. If not, make a change. New doors are opening for paralegals to perform a wider range of tasks that ever before. Doing what you love makes all of the difference in the world. It will make us better at what we do and in service to others.

Duties of CAPA’s Treasurer include maintaining and reconciling the Association’s bank account and other financial records, paying invoices, making deposits, filing tax returns, and keeping track of CAPA’s budget.
From Brenda Colvin, TBLS-BCP, Treasurer: “My paralegal career started as a second career. I had a myriad of different office jobs before I landed at a hotel as a front desk sales rep (clerk) which I enjoyed very much. I am originally from Temple and have lived in Temple, Belton, Waco, Bellmead, Hutto, and Orlando, Florida. I started working as a legal secretary at a firm in Belton and haven’t looked back since. I passed the TBLS family law exam in 2013. I finally landed in the Austin area just a few years ago, thanks to my networking via the Paralegal
Division of the SBOT and TAPS. If you are a member of CAPA but not a member of the PD, I highly recommend it. It is my belief, as paraprofessionals, we should do three
things: 1) be loyal to our ethical attorney/employer; 2) continue to learn and grow in our profession; and 3) work to improve the paralegal profession. Thanks to our predecessors, we have this wonderful CAPA and SBOT-PD to help us all learn, network, and increase the public awareness of paraprofessionals. I enjoy being involved in the associations. This treasurer job is quite a challenging one, but I will endeavor to persevere. When I am not working on family law tasks, CAPA Treasurer duties, or PD committee duties, I enjoy time with my friends and family. We love to listen to live music, go camping, play board games, and watch classic movies together. “
The CLE Seminar Ad Hoc Committee is responsible for planning and coordinating the annual all-day seminar co-hosted by CAPA and Paralegal Division District 4. This year’s Fifth Annual Joint Spring CLE Seminar is scheduled for Friday, May 3, 2019. The committee, comprised of a number of dedicated CAPA and PD D4 members, is hard at work divvying up the important tasks that are necessary to make this seminar happen. Such activities include (but are certainly not limited to) finding and booking speakers, securing sponsors to help finance our effort, obtaining NALA/TBLS credit for the CLE sessions, promoting the seminar to the Central Texas legal community, and coordinating everything about the event at the venue on the day of the seminar.
This year’s seminar includes a variety of subjects that cross over several practice areas. Six hours of CLE credit, including ethics, will be offered to those attending. Registration will be open soon, so be sure to save your space! If you have any questions or are interested in participating on the CLE Seminar Ad Hoc Committee in the future, please contact CAPA President Kris Kennedy or PD District 4 Director Francesca Romans.

Verb. sub·orn • sə-ˈbȯrn
1: to induce secretly to do an unlawful thing 2: to induce to commit perjury
also : to obtain (perjured testimony) from a witness
The Latin word that gave us suborn in the early part of the 16th century is subornare, which translates literally as "to secretly furnish or equip." The sub- that brings the "secretly" meaning to subornare more commonly means "under" or "below," but it has its stealthy denotation in the etymologies of several other English words, including surreptitious (from sub- and rapere, meaning "to seize") and the verb suspect (from sub- or sus- and specere, meaning "to look at").
Theodore Roosevelt had a pet hyena. Its name was Bill and was a present from the Ethiopian emperor. Roosevelt was famous for his many pets, including a one-legged rooster, a badger, a pony, and a small bear.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS
2018-19 Flower Fund Beneficiary: The Dog Alliance
At each CAPA luncheon, flower pots are on the tables to collect your donations to the designated "Flower Fund" charity. CAPA will match donations collected for the year (up to $250.) The Dog Alliance provides service dogs for veterans who are challenged by the visible and invisible wounds of war. They provide therapy dogs to reduce stress in the workplace, the airport, the courts and schools. They bring joy to patients in nursing homes and hospitals. They provide self-esteem building summer camps for kids who love dogs. The Dog Alliance encourages reluctant readers through their reading dog program.
Drop your change, bills, or checks into the flower pot on your table at the monthly luncheon, or donate online. The Community Services committee is making plans for CAPA to volunteer with
The Dog Alliance as a group. STAY TUNED!
Ronald McDonald House
Bring us your Soda Can Tabs! Collecting soda can tabs is a great way to teach kids about philanthropy and the importance of recycling while raising funds to help
children and their families at the same time.
Box Tops for Education
CAPA is collecting Box Tops to benefit low income elementary schools without PTA support. Clip Box Tops for Education "Box Tops" from the packages of hundreds of purchased participating products and bring them to the monthly luncheon.
