“A lot of people like snow. I find it to be an unnecessary freezing of water.” –Carl Reiner

Director’s report | sue Keefe

We are over the winter. Totally. And looking forward to no snow to blocking the library’s driveway, shoveling—totally done with it.

So now that you can hit the roads safely and make it into the library, here’s what may be new for you this spring:

• We’re starting a “Browsing Collection” for you! Just look to your right when you come into the library. You’ll see a pretty aqua “wave” bookcase, with extra copies of new and high demand books and DVDs. The difference between these items and any others? No holds or renewals on them. This ensures that there are always new titles that you can browse and check out. So even if you’re on hold for the latest John Grisham, stop by the library and take a look. You never know--an extra copy might be sitting on the shelf just waiting for you.

• Do you enjoy taking classes—but don’t want to travel to them? We will be adding to our great Courses collection, which gives you DVDs and “textbooks” in one easy kit so you can travel through history, art, music, and other countries and still enjoy a cup of tea at home—all at the same time. (And there’s no final exam either.)

• Do you need help in borrowing e-books and e-magazines on your Kindle, iPad, tablet? You can stop in (and bring your device too) for one-on-one help, register for our

classes on using kindles and ipads, or even reserve a half-hour appointment to get more in-depth help. Check

out the ways to get info at the bottom of this article. We’ll get you reading online as soon as we can.

Special spring classes and events include:• Bach Flower Essences with natural therapeutics specialist Carol Borsello on April 20th at 1:00pm. Explore Dr. Bach’s flower remedy system so you know what flowers may work for you.• MS Word 2013 Class on April 23rd at 10am.

Tired of never knowing the right shortcuts? Don’t throw that document out—learn tips and tools of the trade with Word. Call the library at 302-539-5231 to register.

• Culinary History Class with Chef Charles Oppman on April 30th at 1pm. Do you know the history of salt, chili peppers, and potatoes? Join us for a unique history class, with handouts and tastings—but no final exam!

Check out our site at southcoastal.lib.de.us for full listings. For classes requiring registration, call the library at 302-539-5231 or drop by the circulation desk. And the added bonus—no more snow to slosh through to get to us!

Thanks to all of you who supported and helped with the Winter 2015 Book Sale!!The sale was held on Friday and Saturday, February 13 and 14.Although it was freezing outside, buyers were out in force. The parking lot was packed, and I heard it was difficult to find a parkingplace – a great problem to have!

The sale generated $2,959.57 in sales due to the support of the community and all the volunteers who generously gave their

time and energy! Lora Caputo and Lois Rubinsohn, Co-chairs, especially want to thank the committee: Theo Loppatto, Fran Markowski, and Audrey Young, as well as the set-up crew!

The semi-annual sale is held in February and August by the FOSCL (Friends of the South Coastal Library).Proceeds from the sale are used to enhance the

library’s programs and services. Mark your calendars for our next sale which will take

place August 13, 14, and 15 (Thursday – Saturday).

If you wish to help with the sale and don’t believe your name is on the current list of volunteers, please email or call Lora Caputo ([email protected] or 537-1628). Lora can give you ‘job descriptions’ of the positions for which we need volunteers.

Another Book Sale Success! winter 2015

We are continuously accepting donations of gently used books, Cd’s, and dVd’s. they may be taken to the library during regular open hours.

PAWS (Pet-Assisted Visitation Volunteer Services) has come to Sussex County. Three years ago I had the opportunity to attend the Delaware Read Aloud Conference and participate in the PAWS for People

workshop. This is a non-profit organization with more than 350 volunteers who, with their own pet dog, cat or rabbit, provide comfort and support for people of all ages. They have been providing help to people in assisted living facilities, hospitals, and schools in Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey since 2005.Volunteers are trained and certified by PAWS staff. An extension of PAWS for People is PAWS for Reading. A one-on-one reading session with an unconditionally loving companion builds self-confidence.The dogs offer a safe, nonjudgmental environment. What a remarkable motivator to encourage a child’s interest in reading!

Beginning in 2013, we have had four trained and certified teams of dogs and their owners that come to South Coastal Library the first and third Mondays from 6:30-7:30.An average of fifteen children between the ages of four and fourteen attend each session! Each child receives a “Goldie’s Gang” card with a paw print on it. The paw print is stamped after the child finishes his or her reading and signs the dog’s “pawsagraph” book. After five stamps PAWS for People sends them a certificate and PAWS for Reading T-shirt. Because of the success of our program, PAWS for Reading has expanded to the Frankford and Selbyville libraries.

During our last session for the year, the children colored and decorated thank you cards for each team. Our library presented each owner with a beautiful journal and each dog with a bag of dog biscuits lovingly made by Sandy Kaminsky.

Staffers pick: is the library going to the dogs? | sharon palmer, Children’s Department

Yes! “Look! there are dogs in the library!” yelled the first grader to his father on a recent Monday evening.

Once again, many thanks to all involved!

For the second year in a row, the House of Representatives has proposed eliminating - not trimming, merging, auditing or studying – but entirely getting rid of all funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services and, with it, every program that IMLS administers, including LSTA! (Library Services Technology Act)

LSTA is the primary source of annual funding for libraries in the federal budget. The bulk of this program is a population-based grant funded to each state through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Each state determines how they will allocate their LSTA funds, often using the money to provide databases, resume workshops, summer reading activities, and more.

As the phrase goes, “We Need You” now more than ever to join the ranks of our intrepid National Library Legislative Day landing force to storm the beaches of Congress (nicely

and politely, of course). We need you to tell your Senators and Congressperson (more likely their staffs), face-to-face, that libraries are worth orders of magnitude more than every penny spent on them by the federal government, and that libraries care about a host of other issues, from ending intrusive government surveillance to preserving net neutrality to fighting for open access to government-funded information - just to name a few!

Please, sign up today to join us in Washington on May 4th and 5th for a full day of issue briefings and another full day of “hitting the Hill” to deliver libraries’ messages to Congress in person. If you’re new to the process, please also join us on Sunday May 3rd for an afternoon session of everything-you-need-to-know-about-Leg-Day for “newbies” like you. It’s easy. It’s fun. And it’s IMPORTANT - this year more than ever.

Calling librarians, friends, trustees and all library advocates!

It may not be practical for you to attend National Library Legislative Day 2015 in Washington D.C. in person; however, please take the time to let your senators and congressman know how important libraries are to you and your families. You can “hit the hill” with an email, a phone call, or a letter of support for libraries and the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the programs it adminis-ters including LSTA (Library Services and Technology Program) critical to the sustainability and quality of library services for all. If you would like more information you may contact Theo Loppatto at [email protected].

This SOS went out from the State of Delaware Division of Librariesfrom the American Library Association:

An urgent message from ALA’s (American Library Association’s) Washington office forDelaware librarians, friends, trustees and all library advocates. IMLS (Institute of Museum and

Library Services) AGAIN in congressional cross hairs for TOTAL ELIMINATION;National Library Legislative Day attendance more critical than ever!

Even if you can’t go to Washington, you can still help…
