1 Vol 3. No 4 August 9, 2016 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “Service Above Self ” Do you know the history behind this simple but powerful motto? According to RI, in 1911, He Profits Most Who Serves Best was approved as the Rotary motto at the second convention of the National Association of Rotary Clubs of America, in Port- land, Oregon. It was adapted from a speech made by Rotarian Arthur Frederick Shel- don to the first convention, held in Chicago the previous year. The Portland convention also inspired the motto Service Above Self. During a con- vention outing on the Columbia River, Ben Collins, president of the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, talked with Seattle Rotarian J.E. Pinkham about the proper way to organize a Rotary club, offering the principle his club had adopted: Service, Not Self. At the 1950 RI Convention in Detroit, slightly modified versions of the two slogans were formally approved as the official mottoes of Rotary: He Profits Most Who Serves Best and Service Above Self. The 1989 Council on Legislation established Service Above Self as the principal motto of Rotary, because it best conveys the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service. What does Service Above Self mean to you? Does it means giving up a Saturday of fun with your family to work on a local cleanup project? Or does it mean untold long days running a fundraiser for your club? Or maybe it means donating money to Polio Plus for the eradication of Polio? To me it means all of those things and much more. If you look in the dictionary under “Selfless” you find the following definition: having or showing great concern for other people and little or no concern for yourself. To me, that sounds like a pretty good definition of Service Above Self. I have to say that I’m proud to belong to an organization who believes in Service Above Self and you should be too! Sincerely, Mike President Mike presents cer- ficates of appreciaon to members who demonstrated the Service Above commitment dur- ing these past couple of months. Ron Floyd for making sure our first Aloha Raffle was a huge success. Jimmy Wilson for oversite of our annual Demolon Derby. Rick and JoAnn Sprenkle for the endless hours required to ensure that our wine booth and margarita trailer were well stocked with supplies and volunteers.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

“Service Above Self ” Do you know the history behind this simple but powerful motto? According to RI, in 1911, He Profits Most Who Serves Best was approved as the Rotary motto at the second convention of the National Association of Rotary Clubs of America, in Port-land, Oregon. It was adapted from a speech made by Rotarian Arthur Frederick Shel-don to the first convention, held in Chicago the previous year. The Portland convention also inspired the motto Service Above Self. WHERE AM I…?

Over the years, the Jackson Rotary Club has giv-

en back to the community through a variety of

projects and services that benefit the community

at large. Typically, you will see a rotary logo grac-

ing the project as a silent reminder that “we were

there”. In the weeks to come, we will post a pho-

to of these logos which will highlight some of our

projects.

So … do YOU know where this is? Do you

know what we had to do to complete this pro-

ject? For the answer to the first question see page

4 of this newsletter. For the answer to the 2nd

question, come to our meeting tomorrow.

apparent and it looks like the 1st panel is almost done.
