We had over 200 families in attendance with lots of families with young children in great costumes. There was a costume parade with prizes for best costumes for a family, a boy and a girl. My thanks go out to each of you that assisted neighbors following this major natural disaster. We just elected officers and are privileged to have a wonderful Executive Committee. We are losing two members of the Executive Committee: Rich Abramowitz and Robert Riddle. I wish to thank Rich Abramowitz for two years of service as our Treasurer and we all wish him and his family the best as he explores a new business opportunity. Robert Riddle is stepping down as Corresponding Secretary due to term limits. Thank Robert for a job well done. Our new Treasurer, Chapman Holbrook, is well equipped to handle that job and we are fortunate to tap into his skills. Our new Corresponding Secretary is Martha Eaves and we are looking forward to working with her on the Committee. I’m sure that the year 2016 will bring rising property values, some tear downs and remodeling of existing houses in our subdivision. Our continuing maintenance of our yards and appearance of our houses will continue to make Marilyn Estates a top choice for home buyers in Southwest Houston. President’s Messageby: Carter Hixon

Hi Neighbors

We just had a very successful Halloween Social, built around Gage and Amy Mueller’s wonderful Halloween decorations. We had over 200 families in attendance with lots of families with young children in great costumes. There was a costume parade with prizes for best costumes for a family, a boy and a girl. Many local merchants donated certificates for door prizes. HEB sent their mascot to join in the fun and celebrate the reopening of their store on South Braeswood at Chimney Rock.

It seems that a number of our residents have completed repairs from the May flooding and are returning to their homes. As I mentioned in the October Homeowners Meeting, it is gratifying to note that most of the families that were flooded and had to abandon their homes during repair activities managed to keep their yards mowed and their area maintained.

Our new Treasurer, Chapman Holbrook,is well equipped to handle that job and we are fortunate to tap into his skills.

Be sure and get to know your Block Directors, since they are your connection and representative for the Association and say hi to Cindy Ramirez and Michael Lee as they patrol our streets.

The very best to all.

2015 Marilyn Estates Halloween Socialby Marge Mayer

At the suggestion of Gage Mueller, the planning commit-tee enthusiastically agreed to have our annual Marilyn

Estates Social October 31, Halloween, on the 5500 Block of Yarwell. Even with threatening weather and a cloudy sky, what a success it was! More than 200 people were in attendance: young families, new families,

loads of kids, long time neighbors and a few visitors who wished their subdivision would do an similar event.

Surely, the residents on 5500 Yarwell get the spirit award for the best Halloween decorations in Marilyn Estates. Many neighbors came in costumes; there were original creations, colorful renditions, pop characters, fairly tale characters and whatever else you can possibly imagine. There was a parade of all kids and parents with their festive outfits.

Thanks goes to the committee Nancy Hixon, Chris Barnett, Rossana Virmecati, Laura Anderson, Marge Mayer and the guy who inspired us, Gage Mueller. Credit to our President, Carter Hixon who was actively involved the entire afternoon.

Special appreciation to Gage Mueller for all his time before, during and after the social and committee members who spent time getting all the door prizes that added to the fun.

It was a great afternoon. We invite whomever wishes to help coordinate this next year, just email, [email protected].

If you have not met Gage Mueller, you are missing a unique guy. It feels as though his name describes him. Gage is a man who is passionate about his interests. His main drive is to make the world a better place. He does that with his volunteer activities.

He is also committed to Halloween, a holiday his mother celebrated with gusto as Gage was growing up. Now Gage is spreading the fun of Halloween not only with his family, his block, Gage’s blow-up decorations are even on his neighbor’s lawn, but with our whole subdivision, Marilyn Estates.

Professionally Gage is involved with selling computer software for Conventus. A little known fact, prior to his present career, Gage ran the Zamboni machine for the Houston Aeros for 17 years. Gage is currently associated with the Houston Rockets and works at Toyota Center during home games.

Gage, his wife, Amy, their daughter, Layla, son Myles and dog Twix have been living on Yarwell for eight years.

Gage and his family are truly a gift to our neighborhood, they are involved, participate, caring and want to make a difference in our community.

Marilyn Estates Association Minutes: Quarterly MeetingMonday, October 26, 2015Jewish Community Center

President Carter Hixon called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and subbing as Parliamentarian, Nancy Hixon certified that there was a quorum.

On motion made, seconded and unanimously approved, the minutes of the July 27, 2015 meeting were approved and accepted as submitted.

President Hixon announced that everyone who had not already signed the deed restrictions consent form will be receiving them soon from your block director. He asked that you please be expedient in getting those signed and notarized and back to your block director so that we can record them with the Harris County Records Dept. Once we have 51% acceptance from each of the 10 sections in our sub-division, we will speak with one voice, all of us.

President Hixon also thanked everyone who came together and helped their neighbors during the Memorial Day floods. Some wonderful stories came out of that gut wrenching experience.Neighbors helping neighbors. That’s what makes this sub-division really great. Many people had to move out of their homes and are now remodeling, while still maintaining the property according to the deed restrictions.

He also contacted Public Works regarding the people in the 5400 blocks and those in the culdesacs about their sewer connections. He was told that there are 2 contracts in the schedule. The first one will begin in January, 2016, and it will include Burdine, Checkerboard, Oasis, Paisley, Kit, Rutherglen, Valkeith and Queensloch. They will take the sewer connection that goes to the back of the lot, pick it up half way back and reroute it to the curb and the new sewer line is. The second contract will follow several weeks later. It will include Lymbar, Cheena, Dumfries, Yarwell and Wigton.

Jonathan Shear, the nominating chair was out of town, but sent his nominating slate to President Hixon. The nominations for the 2016 year are:

Motion to accept the nominations was unanimous.

Seth Gravesmill, Manager of our local HEB on South Braeswood returned to give us an update on the store’s reopening after repair from major flood damage. He hoped that the store would be opening on October 28, but a few kinks may delay it until later in the week.

Maury introduced Deputy Michael Le, who is replacing Officer Tommy Narcisse. He shared with us the importance of installing surveillance cameras around the perimeter of your home. He will be patrolling our neighborhood on the evening shift. Be sure to say hi to Cindy and Michael when you see them in the neighborhood.

V.P. Barnett introduced Greg Corbett, Lead design specialist of Bug DeFence, detailing commercial mosquito control methods to benefit our homeowners. He gave us lots of good info on how we can help prevent the infestation of mosquitos and offered options for how his company can help with the control.

Treasurer’s ReportAs of September 30, 94% of property owners have paid their 2015 dues in full or have made arrangements for partial payments. Those that have not, currently owe $360. Interest will begin accumulating beginning November 1st.

Architectural Control ReportIt’s been a quiet summer.

Maintenance & Beautification ReportWe’re scheduled to plant the new winter color in December, after the warmth is gone so we can get the most out of our money. To get the wow! factor, we have to spend more money. Hopefully that money will be in the budget again. The sprinkler system is going on at 4:00p.m. and Linda will ask the landscape company to change that to 4:00a.m..

Security ReportDo everything you can to deter crime. Lock your cars, don’t leave valuables in it. If you see anyone in the neighborhood that doesn’t look like they belong, call the dispatch office and have the constables check them out. Don’t forget to use the vacation watch form on our website when you go away, even for a day.

Welcoming CommitteeWe have had 4 new families move in this summer.

Communications ReportWe are now totally online with the Gazette. If you don’t get the Gazette, get with Marge and she will make sure we have your correct email address. We are always looking for advertisers for the Gazette. If anyone knows of someone who might want to put an ad in, please let Marge know. Yard of the quarter committee will be judging homes with a Halloween theme.

Deed Restriction EnforcementWe have a lot of people in the neighborhood working on flood damaged homes. Homeowners must remember to keep up the appearance of their yards during the time they are out of their homes. If a home appears to look vacant, strippers come in and strip the electrical and plumbing fixtures from the home.

The committee has been driving around the neighborhood looking for violations of the deed restrictions. The firstinspection produced 150 letters sent out, mostly for garbage cans showing from the street or grass too high. Most recent inspection had only 50 letters sent. That includes the houses along Braeswood that were skipped the first time due to the flood. The trend shows that we are at the right level forinspections. There are only a couple of cases that may get tothe legal level. There was discussion regarding the old Shell station on the corner of Chimney Rock and S. Braeswood.

Old Business: None

New Business: Maury and Sheryl Sklar are new grandparents.

On motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the meeting was adjourned at 8:32 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Debra SuhlRecording Secretary

Yards Of The Quarter

Current Yards Of The Quarter recognizes all our neighbors who were flooded. During the time they were or still are out of their homes, they maintained their yards. They have gone the extra mile for our neighborhood. We will not list addresses but thank them as a group.

In honor of our Fall Halloween Social, we are doing something different, Spooktacular Halloween Decorations. We are recognizing the block of 5500 Yarwell. Several families spent lots of time to make a bright Halloween celebration. We appreciate your efforts.

We shall resume our YARDS OF THE QUARTER (YOTQ) program in March, in time to print the results in the April Marilyn Estates Gazette. We have four anonymous volunteers cruise through our subdivision and choose the most attractive yard on each street.

Criteria considered for YOTQ will be:

Overall appearance of the front of each home. Excellent maintenance of total front yard. Bushes and trees trimmed. Ornaments tastefully displayed. Exception for pick-up day, no garbage or recycle containers or grass bags at curbside. To qualify for YOTQ homes must have their address clearly visible from the street (this is a city ordinance).

In order to provide opportunities to recognize more homes, the YOTQ would only be awarded to one home during the calendar year. In rare instances, if no home qualifies, there will be no home recognized on the street.
